ACC Panic Room: After UNC and Duke delivered in the Final Four, can Heels win it all?
After a week of full blown hype, North Carolina and Duke delivered in the Final Four. The Heels are moving on the championship game, while Coach K's retirement starts one game earlier than he had hoped.
Welcome to the A. C. C. Panic room alongside Lauren Brownlow. I'm Jovi's were in the Superdome. We just watched north Carolina beats Duke Brownlow. I'm not gonna lie. I thought it would be really freaking difficult to top what we saw at Cameron Indoor Stadium in terms of surreal moments in the rivalry. And while that is the greatest moment in regular season rivalry history, we never really thought we would get a game like this in the final four, we talked about it, we do the mental exercises, We think about 1991 we never actually thought this would happen, it happened and it freaking delivered and it topped what we saw at Cameron Indoor four weeks ago. It really didn't like I think I was surprised too because my feeling was okay the first time we ever finally get this, it's going to be terrible. Sure, you know, it's just not, it's not right. Exactly. It's like how can it deliver? But that's all it's done every single game this year, pretty much. Except after the first one. The first one was not so interesting. It delivered in its own way. It didn't deliver. It was a blowout in Chapel Hill, but it delivered in its own way. And I'll say this to like every single game between these two. I have gotten both the results and the way it's played out wrong, including this one. I did think it would be closed. I just thought Duke would find a way to make a few more plays and that's not the only thing I'm disappointed by is the fact that my mojo bags did not actually pay off with a quadruple overtime. That's what I was hoping for. But both teams did have fun even though Duke ends up losing in the end, everybody had fun. That's why I got these basketball earrings today on in shopping in new Orleans. They're, they're, they're shiny, they're glittery, so good, so proud that you got those teams played hard now? Look. Um, I'll be honest, I'm still kind of processing what I just freaking watched and I think a lot of, I think a lot of other people in the same boat, Carolina obviously is relieved. You know, watching Carolina at the end, it's almost celebrate like they won the title after the game is understandable is absolutely understandable. But before the game, I think you can agree with me walking around the building, seeing Duke and Carolina people, things were tight. And I think that helped explain some of what we saw in the first half fouls aside, you could tell that both teams were tight and understandably. So it was the freaking Final four. Yeah, I mean, I think right, both teams were for sure, tight. I even thought Duke fans got tight like later in the game because like they were really loud and into it. It was a clear Duke advantage as you would imagine, right? Like they know it's his last ride, they're gonna come here and pack this place out. They did. I mean for the most part, right? They were the majority. But I'm telling y'all late in that game when they needed them. I couldn't hear him. I mean, am I wrong butts work lunch? Okay. I'm not crazy because I was like, hey, where'd the Duke fans go? They need you. I lost track of the lead changes. I lost track of the ties. I know you tweeted this out about like every time you thought there was a moment that, okay, this is the pinpointed moment that you can talk. This is going to be the outcome decider. Oh no, it's not. Yeah, no, it wasn't. And you know, in the first half, I know that taliban Caro hit a big three and you know, he did the Palo bancario celebrate things. But when north Carolina was able to claw back. Now, understandably, both north Carolina and Duke, we're dealing with their own issues that made it suboptimal for each team Caleb love and the love rollercoaster, It hadn't gotten going yet. Okay. But Carolina survived that just like Duke wasn't really able to claw their way claw bigger lead because of Mark Williams being in foul trouble was a factor, you're right. But I kept saying that every single time, you know, it felt like they were about to make a run and it felt like they were a shot away like a kill shot almost on Carolina, They would miss it. It was like four or five things. I thought the band carol was going to be the one where that's when you know the first shout out to jim young danger zone. Right? So that's one of those things with Carolina coming back to get it Within two, eventually tie it. That to me, told me buckle up for the second half and that's when the love rollercoaster started doing its thing. That's when Trevor keels stepped up outside of just paolo Bancario being the lone guy. Yeah, I thought he played great too. But you know, shoutout to joe DiLeo who had been crunching the numbers on the stat when it came to a J. Griffin griffin scores 10 or more points there, 19 and o on the season when he doesn't score 10 points, they lose. Well, how was a J. Griffin today? Not great. Now, Loki Jeremy roach has been a key difference maker for Duke during the last month, helping them get here. He was also a non factor in this game. I was surprised, I was surprised by that as well. So, all of this leads to what I thought was the actual pinpoint moment of everything changing Caleb, love hitting another big shot. I almost feel like I have to hit a pause button here and to and say brady manning also finally started delivering in the second half as well, but Caleb love was the clear difference maker. So he hits that big three. That's followed by Mark Williams missing, free throws, you've got to make your friend. That was the one for me that I was like, okay, that's, that's when, that's when I was like, it's over. It's over. Carolina is going to win this thing. That's the same as me because actually somebody literally asked him yesterday about how he improved his free throw shooting so much and I was like, mm mm mm mm mm. Not ideal. No, But at that point, I was like, it's a combination of the pressure of the moment. You gotta hit him and just everything. I mean, it was an exhausting game I think for all of these guys to play and Carolina was struggling by the end of it. And, and you know, Duke had depths, but I just think they were kind of emotionally physically done, which gets to monday night. Oh, there's another, wait, yeah, there is another game I guess. They didn't award the time. I don't, no, no, no, no, no. There's no confetti. I was, it was funny, you joke, but I was like, where's the confetti? Oh, that's right. It's just a final four game. And Kansas won the game against Villanova, which ended up being a little bit more of an exciting game. Villanova clawed back into that game. Made things interesting. The Kansas loki while we've been so obsessed with Duke and Carolina has been really freaking good in this tournament and Carolina is going to have to get emotionally up off the mat for this game if they want to win it. Yes, they want to win it. What? Uh huh. I'm not okay. I'm not saying that they don't actually want to win it. Of course they want to win it. Is this like the most consequence free national title game Carolina has or will ever play in? Well, here's okay, tell me, find me another one. Here's 1 1946. Actually I found another one. Okay, here's where I think things are interesting for I don't think it's about Carolina. You know what? I think monday night is gonna be about Roy Williams, monday night is gonna be about Roy Williams. You know coach K had his farewell tour, right, Roy Williams wanted to get the hell out but he actually look, we can Royce had his own little makeshift, what I'm saying is both guys went out the way they wanted to go. Exactly and Karmically Roy beating himself up a year ago on March on, on april 1st of you know, old Roy can't do it anymore. X Y Z blah blah blah blah blah ends up having a really enjoyable first year of retirement, visiting his former players who are coaches or former assistance through our coaches, visiting his coaching buddies, being a fan getting on tv awareness sweater, that's all today. Yeah, he was wearing another great striped sweater, all that stuff and the guy that he picked, who, he wanted to be the next coach at north Carolina and that people didn't agree with it and agree with him gets to the championship game and he's playing Kansas where he has been openly. They've made they made up this year. They've made up. He visited earlier. So like it really in a weird sort of way ends up being the Roy Williams retirement tour with a championship game on monday. I don't know what to expect on monday. I don't know what Carolina team is going to show up because I was gonna say like, here's the interesting part to me. We talked about this before, Kansas and Villanova have been playing the role of U. N. C. Before the second game between Carolina and duke and that. No one's been talking about them. So what's it gonna be like if basically tomorrow all Bill self gets asked about is like Roy Williams. Oh boy. That's gonna be a lot of fun. All right, we'll close on this going forward. Um, Michalczewski walks off into the sunset. Um, great. The rivalry. The rivalry is going to move on. Yes. I think it is clear the rivalries going to move on, but that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy the petty moments like north Carolina basketball twitter account decided to put out when they won the game with this farewell. There was also a little bit of a Frosty moment and post game that I happened to witness but I don't know enough about the context to really get in. Yeah, I think you and I saw that Frosty moment and I'm in the same boat. I couldn't quite get what the context was like. John scher was annoyed and it looked like people were taking people away from people. But you know, but again, I couldn't get down to the bottom of that because I was focused on other things and trying to capture everything at once. And yeah, I'm sure they're zapruder films will come out later. Um, but going, look, the rivalry will continue that, you know, it's not like Cameron indoor stadium just imploded because of what happened tonight and what happened. No, no, I'm pretty sure that that's gonna find, john shows me the coach next year and coach K is going to be gardening or whatever. Coach Kay's legacy doesn't change. I asked Mark Williams yesterday what his hobbies are, uh huh. The film takes up a lot of time. That's a good point. That's a good point. So, you know, everything is gonna move on. Coach K's career speaks for itself. Five national titles. Another trip to the final four. He's got gold medals, helped revive USa basketball, like his legacy is set all right. But that's a very levelheaded, objective way of looking at what happened tonight on the fan side of things. It's a wrap. It's a wrap. It's a wrap any time. Do you think it doesn't impact at least a little bit, but it's like fresh start, you know what I mean? No, because look, you know how I feel about the dynamics with duke and Carolina. Carolina is obsessed with all things Duke, you know, as much as, as much as ST as much as Carolina fans love to laugh at and see state being, why are you so obsessed with us? 100% Carolina the same way with duke. They've lately been plenty obsessed with ST Well there is that too. I see you in the mentions Carolina fans who just want to read about ST, I don't care about state, Don't celebrate and being bad. Just just be quiet about it. Listen, listen, why do you care listen to the lady with the basketball earrings. Okay. I love those. I still can't get enough of those. Anyway. So to me, the way Carolina fans process the dark side of things, this will never be let go. There's gonna be shirts, it's always gonna be brought up. You think they'll hang a banner? I mean, they might not hang a banner, but you might see a fake media member I was talking to afterwards was saying they should hang a banner with just the score and I was like, yeah, but they might actually rather hang a banner with the other score. So don't you think? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And look, it's got its own inferiority complex when it comes to certain things. And also some like, right, they try to act above it and they're gonna try to be above this. But no, there's no look from a fan perspective in the smack talk that happens at the office and anything else. You can't come back from that. Like it's a freaking rap. Not as many of you all live around here as as like state fans so at least you'll dodge that in your office except for like probably the educators that are like ready to dunk on you. Just take the week off work. Well that's gonna wrap it up for this edition of the A. C. C. Panic room. You're gonna be here on monday. I will. All right. I'll I'll be back in Raleigh. Got to make sure things are being held down. We're just gonna take phone calls all week. Always. Seriously. I'm not gonna have to prep for a show for like a month. It's the best. It's the best. Like seriously. I love this. I love my job. Who could who could imagine not being able to do local radio in our market. We were we had to be the envy of the nation because we had the easiest freaking week. I wanted I wanted weeks of lead up. I didn't want them to play tonight. I wanted to play two weeks from now because I needed more content. There wasn't enough. I mean you're not wrong. There wasn't enough Lauren. No I'm with you but now we got this there wasn't enough time to like write the stuff and to drive here. Well the ones that did drive here. Yeah, sure. Okay, I get it. I get it. Rough life. You're here on Crestor driver. That's gonna wrap it up for this edition of the panic room. We will see you sometime late monday night, Tuesday morning later.
