NC State
ACC Panic Room: Pack and Heels set up for extra spicy meeting
Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies discuss the Black Friday meeting between NC State and UNC
welcome to the A. C. C. Panic room alongside Lauren Brownlow. I'm Jovi is black friday Brownlow. We got black friday deals on all the narratives between N. C. State and north Carolina friday night don't we? We do. We definitely do. Yeah I guess like I mean it is a weird like they've played on friday before but at night it hasn't been at night for a while. Like Dave Doeren said today he's literally missing his own like his own son is playing in the high school playoff. Can't watch it because you know obviously. Yeah. Yeah there's there's a there's a separate conversation to be had about essentially listening to the money and having to play these friday night games because that's what network television demands and they need the inventory for the A. C. C. Network and things like that. Like I know David thiel uh wrote about this about the commonwealth cup right? That's going to be an A. C. C. Network game and a good chunk of Comcast subscribers are not gonna be able to watch it. Uh Even though you can get on hulu and there's other ways to get the A. C. C. Network. But hey these checks ain't gonna cash themselves right like that. That's all part of this arrangement and that's gonna put you in some bad situations where you get to play on a friday night. It's things for Dave Doeren that he's gonna miss his kid's high school football game playoff game but it's where we are because I also think that Dave Doran has been looking forward to this game against North Carolina for quite some time when when N. C. State lost to wake forest. I get that it was a back breaker for a lot of NC State fans but I did not feel that the season was all lost for the Wolf pack for a variety of reasons. The first one being that if you still took care of business the rest of the way you can do something that NC state football doesn't typically do and that's when 10 games in a year right? Like that. Like I think that's what the second time it would happen. Um The other one is a larger talking point that I feel has been building the last three years since Mack Brown got to north Carolina. And you'll remember when matt got here there was a lot of discourse as to whether or not you know Mac was the right guy. Should they have gone with a younger coach. I mean things that we don't necessarily need to revisit. But the one thing that I said that I believed that north Carolina, the state of north Carolina had changed since Mack Brown had been here in 1997. There's more football being played here. Other programs have have come up and have done a really good job like app right e see you will eventually get itself right etcetera etcetera. And I did feel that Dave Doeren while you know recruiting might not be something that wows you. The one thing that Dave Doeren does really well is develop players with that coaching staff. You can look at the NFL success as, as proof that Dave Doeren knows how to develop guys and get the Wolfpack to these windows where they have a chance to maybe compete for the atlantic division and a half years. Yeah, that's not to say that, like obviously they go after some of the same guys. Like it would be discourse of course we're not implying here just to be clear that like somehow, oh dorine recruits differently, you know, they're still going after a lot of the same people, but you know, there is that track record and it's been a good one. So now this this builds though, this bill, this builds to the last three years where Mack Brown has been crushing it on the recruiting trail and everybody's anytime there's a four or five star recruit my timeline fills up and people are like Mac is back, it's all working out. You know, there's this attitude that N. C. State's being left behind and because everybody loves Mack Brown north Carolina has been getting a lot of the press and we saw it this offseason and Dave Doeren has been alluding to it, but he just won't outright say it when he talks about disrespect. Yes, there's an element about the respect that comes with being in the ap top 25 or being considered in the college football playoff rankings, But really I think what he's saying is something that Julia and I have talked about on the radio really. What he's getting at is all y'all do is talk about those guys over there. We had a really good season last year. We got a good quarterback. We got defense. We've got guys that go to the NFL but all I freaking hear about is Mack brown and north Carolina. They so much as fart it gets on ESPN we have to scratch and claw and do whatever it is just to get discussed. And then the sec network won't even talk about this because they're too busy talking about matt Brown in north Carolina. So I feel like this is like the final stamp like okay this is when you'll respect us And I really do think that N. C. State is viewing this game with a little bit more umph than previous north Carolina. NC state games for that very reason. Yeah I think that's interesting and I was really interested to see what his demeanor was like today. Dave Dorrans you know And um he I wouldn't I wondered because we've seen this play out throughout the season right that when he starts talking about disrespect it hasn't always gone great and he really didn't go that route this time. He was respectful and about Carolina and what they're about uh you know and he obviously praised his own team quite a bit but he didn't go there, He didn't talk about being disrespect or whatever else. He talked a lot about senior day and how important that is to him. And the one thing he mentioned that was could even remotely be interpreted whatever was like, you know, at least we'll have our quarterback healthy for the first time, you know, playing them and I think like three years or something like that. Um, so, you know, yeah, there's, but like other than that, that's not, you know, I thought he was pretty even keeled and that's probably at least somewhat by design. You don't want to give any, uh, any additional fuel in a week like this, even if that's somewhat silly, but whatever, you know, it is what it is. And I think that, yeah, I mean, I think it's personal to him for that reason and then I do believe him when he talks about the senior stuff and he's talked about that even his own senior day, like how much he remembers and how important it was to him and you know, he wants that, you know, there's other coaches in this area that have talked like that before, Roy Williams was huge on those types of senior day, like those were really important to him and I think Dave Doeren feels kind of similarly and certainly considering everything, even though he did a bit like, I don't know who all is going to be officially seniors when he gave us somewhat of a list, but like they got a lot of guys, they're gonna be out there walking and having their minds because the NFL doesn't give grades out yet. But he, and he, he bade that caveat. He's like, look, you're gonna see guys out there. I don't know for sure if they're coming back or not, but they want you just in case and yeah, I mean I do think that that part is legit important to him too. But I think what you said makes sense. And you know, at the end of the day, like I think he understands the importance of scoreboard, you know, and he knows that it hasn't been on their side for the last couple times and he, for that to change. Yeah. And I also think too as you've been, as, as Dave dorman, I say you and Dave has been talking about the lack of respect and everything else. When you double that with the way people have reacted north Carolina season, which was, they're overrated. They're overrated. They're already talked him up. There was really nothing there. They had valid questions etcetera etcetera. You can't then follow that up and then lose the game. So there are two, There are two things that I find interesting going into the matchup one actually there's three things. One. NC state's actually touchdown favorite in this game, which I would assume that's more than I would have thought. But also maybe Vegas is, is finally realizing like, hey, what states people have and be like what Carolina looks like on the road or maybe there's some SAm Howell buzz in the mix there maybe, I don't know because somehow didn't play in the Wofford game, but that they don't need sam Howell to beat Wofford. Right? So give them a rest and then they can play them on a short week again since the state. But I stopped questioning Vegas after the wake forest north Carolina game, I stopped, I stopped, I stopped, I was like this Vegas, what the hell is actually Vegas does know from time to time. So states a 6.5 point favorite, which I find interesting. Mack Brown is really does one thing well at north Carolina and that's beat in state opponents. However, since Mack Brown has been back, they haven't done well in primetime road games. I think one in nine I think in primetime road games, whatever it is, it's not, it's not great. Right? We haven't been good on the road and that's something that talked about a bunch today too. Yes. Both of them care about the rivalry part, Both of them kind of paid lip service to that. But like I think for door and it is kind of that senior day thing. And then the larger disrespect that you were talking about and for Mac, I think it's partially like look to make the leap from good to great this year we would have had to have learned to do better on the road and we didn't do that and they didn't know they did not they were bad bad on the road. They even got worse on the road. And so I think that that's a big rallying cry for them and they're basically last chance to do that is like okay we have to play better on the road. And so that's that's definitely I think something that they're pushing for two because they have not been good on the road at all. So who you got? Yeah. Uh That's a tough one. I don't I'm not 100% yet. I need to kind of feel out some more of the vibes this week. I I lean state but it's a gentle lane. It's a gentle because like what about it keeps sticking in my mind is like what would be a more fitting nonsensical end too? Both north Carolina season in general and the A. C. C. Season in particular then to like have Carolina go in. They're not off state play well on the road for the first time all season. The month name which again look at who they played on the road and who they played well against. Why is Notre dame the only one you played well against. That's the best team you played on the road to do that play well on the road, get that road win and then like basically Clemson falls backwards into the A. C. C. You know into on the atlantic side like what would be a more fitting and like nonsensical into the A. C. C. Season than that. I'm look I'm very much of the opinion that the most nonsensical thing that you are you're floating out there would be that Wake Forest goes on to win the atlantic division and goes on to the championship game while Mack Brown talks about the state championship. You know like yeah you know what maybe we were we were we were we were picked to be a dark horse for the college football playoff win the A. C. C. And also stuff but we got we got the state championship. Meanwhile Poor Dave clawson is actually going to the A. C. C. Championship and nobody's really talking about it because things have kind of wound down for for the demon deacons after a loss to Clemson. Although my you know my you know my feelings on the Clemson game that was a Super Bowl for Clemson against Wake Forest. That was to prove a point from Dab. Oh and the squad and yeah maybe there's something to what you're talking about where they somehow back their way into into the championship because the permutations are you know Wake loses out. We've we've been focused on Wake losing out state winning out right which would send N. C. State to the sec championship game. But if wake loses out and state loses clinton didn't have to do anything they're in they're in. So it's because you're playing south Carolina and that would be hilarious. So I want to talk of like clips and his banquets or whatever and they're done and no no no don't watch them win the freaking league right? You know less confident in the wake losing scenario that I was just because of you know boston college like a lola. Um My my fighting field. Djokovic's just couldn't quite. Yeah but wakes also looked rough to Sam Hartman has not been has not been playing clean football even though in the N. C. State game they found a way to win that game. Despite the fact that I went through turnovers in that game. My No I mean the only thing I'm predicting is is great content for us Lauren. That's what I'm that's what I'm predicting on friday. I'm predicting great content because one way or the other somebody is going to come away from that game really really really ticked off and somebody's gonna come out really really happy by the result. But I know going into it there's gonna be a lot of clutch butt cheeks because it's gonna be stressful for both sides because neither one can afford to lose this from the discussion point at all coming back from your holiday break to deal with that. You've seen a lot of both fan bases playing it down to an extent list right now because it's hard to do that considering what's at stake for them. But there's been a lot of that and you see that every year, I feel like it's like there's this simultaneous thing of like look how meaningful our referee is. People should pay more attention to it. But also like, you know, we're not really sure. It's not a good deal. You know, it's like, come on. Like of course you're gonna care. Stop it. Well, we'll see you all friday night, black friday and north Carolina, NC state, enjoy your thanksgiving, enjoy some football. We'll see you then.
