ACC Panic Room: Pack's trip to Death Valley is the big one
Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies discuss the biggest NC State game since the last biggest game for NC State. Plus, UNC has to get their defense right against Virginia Tech.
Welcome to the A. C. C. Panic room alongside Lauren Brownlow Anchovies. It's the next big one. The biggest game of Dave Dorrans career since the last biggest game in Dave Doren's career at N. C. State which was last year. Yeah but this is like the first top 10 matchup in school history that's automatically going to make it big no matter who it's against and then having history there between the two teams. Obviously more recent history but still having a little bit of history between the teams and a little bit of a if I call it a rivalry I'd call it a a disagreement I guess. I don't know. Like I think too much is being made. I think too much is being made about that. Oh yeah I don't think the coaches really mind each other that much at all no matter what they said or whatever. Like that's just all in the game for them. But like did the fans not love each other? Maybe it's more Clemson fans than state fans. I don't know but I think that's it. We Giulio and I went on with kelly. Gramlich and Eric Mclean on the Gramlich and Mclean podcast. The debate blowout special for the upcoming Clemson NC State game. But when we had kelly on yesterday I did ask her. Okay okay why does Dave Doeren make Clemson fans feel some type of way and it's like the minute I put it out there on social media it's like playing bingo with Clemson fans you're gonna get a wayne gallman reference one of the earlier matchups. They're running back. you know, he said on the coach's show, well we knocked out there running back. I don't think he meant it in a malicious way, but Clemson fans are gonna take it as a malicious. There's the laptop, there's the, there's the towels with Bradley chubb, right? You know, and last year, I know it's like silly stuff and then you've got instances like last year where they get over. Clemson and Dave says the curse is over. He's got the red solo cup, He's got all these things going on kelly's theory is that door in actively wants to go after Clemson, he wants to go after Dab. Oh, there's some truth to that. And because he's so outwardly like I want to take this dude out or I want to take Clemson out. Clemson fans like whoa, bend the knee, man, bend the knee like Yeah, and who have we seen him go after, so to speak ever Carolina and Clem, I don't think he's ever really taken potshots at anybody else that I can think of and I don't even know that I call it pot shots, what he's done to Clemson but trolling. Maybe some light trolling. I don't know. And let's be real to Clemson fans are the most like fan base in the and it's not really that close, It's not close. Let me tell you as a currently taking a break. Ap top 25 voter Sec fans don't take slides so well just in general so. Yeah I mean to them. Yeah I think there is the bend anything but it's also they've always kind of had that sec mentality to of getting angry at little things sometimes. Yeah that that that that makes sense. And I on the flip side of this is something Julia pointed out yesterday on the on the radio show but on the flip side of it dad likes to remind Dave, it's cute. Y'all are cute. Like I can still get whoever I want from the state of north Carolina right? Whether it's dexter Lawrence or Wil Shipley as you know chili likes to point it's got like 26 family members who have graduated from NC State. Like I think there was ever a guy who's gonna go to the state will be Wil Shipley, they're running back which actually gets us to what I think is gonna be the key to the game now that we know what the weather's gonna be like. At least we have a better idea of what the weather's gonna be like crappy. It's gonna be crappy. You got whatever the remnants of hurricane in that as of this recording are going straight through florida. Um It's gonna be a sloppy mess, there's gonna be some rain and some wind and I think the way the N. C. State has kind of shown itself to be as a kind of ball I keep saying ball control they want to win with defense and they're very methodical on offense and I think of the skill position groups that has shown itself to be pretty consistent in the early going has been the running backs. Wide receiver. Not so much still waiting for somebody to consistently step up running back wise. I think the state understands what they have and I think they're going to utilize it on saturday against Clemson. Well it'll be interesting because I think we've still seen it hasn't been as dominant as it has been in years past. But Clemson's front is still pretty good. It is and it's not easy to run the ball against them. That's what wake tried to do late to kind of run out the clock a little bit and they couldn't do it and they did finally get pressure on Sam Hartman late in that game. And that had been an issue that state has had throughout the season so far of offensive line play at times. And so that'll be interesting to me because look if the weather were throwing weather I think it would change the calculus at least a little bit maybe for both teams because D. J. Has been playing really well lately. And then you know Clemson's corners are they literally ran the pass interference defense. I have never seen anything like it on saturday. I think I think that at least maybe five or six where they just straight up they left nothing to the imagination. It wasn't like a little Jersey tug to try to make sure he didn't get the touchdown. No they were like we're just gonna go ahead and tackle this guy so that he doesn't get seven. Okay cool, great. And I'm like wow, this is absolutely wild to me. I've never seen anything. Like usually you see the dbs being like whoa, not me but no, not in that game. They were like no man, we got cooked, we're stopping a touchdown. So like that's an interesting thing too. I think NC state could have potentially exploited that because those guys are gonna get that much better in a day, you know, in a week or whatever like it's you know, but at the same time if everybody's running the ball a bunch, that's definitely been kind of an area of concern for both teams frankly. And so it'll be interesting to see is it going to be like three nothing at the end or something? Well I call this, I call this even before we knew about the remnants of a hurricane coming through this had every, I forgot what year is off the top of my head. But remember the 20 the 16, it's 2016, the L. S. U. Alabama games no longer ago actually thinking of the last time a hurricane brian kelly through at 20. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no it's not that dumb. So dad was not that dumb, know what I was getting at is envisioning one of those old sec matchups where people told you this is real football, defensive juggernauts going at it. Of course it's only last week hadn't happened to Clemson and then they could have maybe gotten away with that because the defense has been good all year. But when you see Clemson's D backs just having to like literally tackle wide receivers, it's tough to make that argument. Yeah, probably not, probably, but I do feel like this is gonna be a punt fest and like 12 9 is going to do it, that's how I feel, this is gonna go and I don't know maybe maybe Clemson has a little edge because D. J. Has been able to use his legs a lot more this season than last and I think Devon has it in him. Devon Larry, I do, but we haven't seen a whole lot of it and you know, maybe they can get him on some design runs because he's fast enough to do it. But that's scary running in the teeth of that defense. I mean your quarterback is going to need to make something happen with their legs, whether it's scrambling to find somebody or you know, running to pick up some yards when nothing's there because that's absolutely going to be necessary on saturday saturday, I'm not like look if I had to pick and you're kind of making me right, and I'm not lying to you when I say that I almost kind of like talk this out just now. Like if there weren't the rain coming in, I might have gone into the state really because I think they're ready for that. But I just feel like Clemson's biggest area of weakness we've seen so far is their defensive facts and I don't know how big a factor they'll play in a game like that. So being at home as well, I probably have to give them an edge, but I really might have changed if the weather were different. I know that sounds insane, but I think it will, it will and could play a factor, but who knows, they could both make me look like idiots. I still, I still think it's got an edge in this one. I do like NC State's defense overall a little bit better in terms of how they've been playing overall than how Clemson's are playing. You know, even it's, I'm not even talking about it from a talent perspective to, I'm talking about it from a depth and experience perspective because the state has a slight edge in my opinion where Clemson might get you on talent against, the state's got it on experience and I think that's how it's gonna play out in a low scoring affair in the slop and the state's gonna pull this out, but there's also the whole concern of like, now people are looking at the defensive coordinator like, well, you know, so there's that too. Oh yeah, there is. There is a lot of, hey, don't you miss Brent venables right now, right? You were going to be at some point, you're gonna miss some regard. Yeah, that was, that was probably the best defensive coordinator in college football for the last however many years that was going to be effective the season regardless. Um, speaking of defensive coordinators, Gene Chizik was brought in to north Carolina to correct a lot of the mistakes from last year. We haven't seen that play out yet for north Carolina and they've got Virginia Tech coming to town last time. Virginia Tech was in Chapel Hill and there was remnants of a hurricane was 2016. Here's our second reference in 2016 and the Hokies believe that game was what? 34 to 3 over. It might not have been. Yeah, it was, it was they and special teams had multiple scores if I'm remembering correctly. And yeah, it was still want to throw a lot and it was played out about like you think considering and Virginia Tech fans have oddly not let that one go for some reason. Well, it's because I think they felt like Carolina was making excuses afterwards when like this is what annoys me about games like this, if we're being honest. Like sometimes we just get right back to middle school, don't we? It's like, come on, can we all use our brains a little bit like they still got their butts beat Virginia Tech had a much better game plan and they came in and played far better. But like Carolina remember like the yards per play they had in that game compared to every other game and the yards per play like Virginia Tech was allowing versus what they allowed in that game. I don't know how you look at that and not feel like I'm just being real like that doesn't mean that they didn't deserve to win. That doesn't mean they weren't the much better team. Like both of those things were absolutely the case. There are more than one phase of a football game. There's more than just your offense, but at the same time they viewed that being brought up as a factor in any way whatsoever, as an excuse. And I don't, I've never really understood that. I, I'd like to think that this is a pride game for north Carolina and that they're going to take what happened and where they had their asses handed to them on defense. They're gonna show up against Virginia Tech squad that's still figuring it out offensively Brent prize we sought. We've seen this earlier in the season. He's kind of like trying to run a team that he wants rather than the team that he has as they're trying to rebuild from Justin fuente, but it could be entirely possible where north Carolina is just to get right for everybody right now. And that's and that's my difficulty with the tar heels going forward. There is nobody left on the schedule outside of maybe pit where I look at that and go Carolina can win that game. They're talented enough offensively where they can put up 56 points, 60 points in that game and find a way to win. But on the flip side of that, their defense clearly cannot be trusted. And it's entirely possible that Virginia tech gets right against them. Miami, which we've seen kind of struggle offensively this year. They find it, they get it. That might be what Notre dame Carolina was supposed to look like. Sure. And the other, it's entirely possible. It could be that way. And then there's like Duke Dukes welcoming Virginia, Virginia offensively has also not been able to find itself with Brennan armstrong this season. And again, they're still working through the process of Tony Elliott and and how things are gonna be going with the new head coach. Um, I like Duke in this game against the, against the cavaliers. And given the way that Mike Elko has this team buying in and you've seen the improvements on the offensive line in terms of uh, strength and conditioning everything else, which was clearly lacking the last couple of seasons under David Cutcliffe, I can, I can see Duke beat north Carolina going forward too. So it's just big, it's, it's, it's an either or, and it's maddening to watch the tar heels because of it. Yeah, I mean, in Duke's case, it's kind of the same thing I'd say a little bit about Carolina and Virginia Tech and Duke and Virginia. I'm not saying that history means anything. But both teams have given the other fits. Like Virginia has given Duke a lot of trouble in the last decade. And Virginia tech has basically dominated Carolina since they joined the, it does not matter how good Carolina has been necessarily, does not matter how good Virginia Tech has been, necessarily. They have, they've kind of owned that series and it's usually close to be fair. Not always, but it usually is, but still like Carolina does come out on top, no matter if it's in Chapel Hill or if it's in Blacksburg, it does not matter. And so in Virginia and do the same kind of thing. I do think Virginia, the one thing I would say is they do seem to run the ball a lot better than they ever did in the previous, like four or five years or so, maybe more. But yeah, like they're running the ball a little bit better and in a game like this again, maybe the team that can run it, it becomes a little bit more of an advantage. But yeah, I mean if I had to pick, I'd probably lean duke as well just for all the reasons that you said. But it'll be interesting to see how they kind of respond to the Kansas game too. I mean I don't know yet. Speaking of responsible close on this that's what I'm curious about with Wake Forest you know they they poured it out against Clemson lose in overtime and they have it's been a really intriguing a couple of weeks here because you've got the Clemson Wake Forest game which was fantastic. Is Aaron judge gonna split box with this conversation about the Clemson florida state. Okay ps this also happened with an sec game and yeah they didn't cut into monday night football. So it's not weird. Just care about college football. They do. It's cowboys fans they care about what's going on with the Yankees. Oh well yeah but at the same time they won't they would never disrespect the shield in that way. Of course not. So I'm curious to see how Wake Forest bounces back from really you know to games like the way things went with Liberty can recalibrate you right? But after what happened against Clemson it could also take you out and florida State has kind of been on this upward trajectory this season. Now I don't know how much I'm gonna take away from the beating boston college which could very well be the worst team in the A. C. C. Next to. I mean they weren't 14. Nothing with less than two minutes in to be fair. Fair fair. Fair fair. So florida State and florida State is going to be coming to N. C. State next week. So there's been this atlantic like the atlantic essentially could be decided this weekend if Clemson wins but still up for grabs if N. C. State was. And then host florida State next week. Yeah. I mean it's definitely interesting and I think you know, we've obviously seen wait take their first loss. How do they bounce back from that? Um Just florida State come into confident maybe. I mean it's a possibility but they're also just playing really well this year and they seem to bounce back from any adversity they hit during games as well. And um I feel validated about my Jordan Travis take. Even even if I can't have filled Djokovic and I can't clearly because he's broken. A lot of us were in that boat by the way with your Covid. So I always liked Jordan Travis. Like he's not perfect. He's not the best passer but he just makes plays like that's what he does and I like him a lot and I love that he's been getting a chance to kind of shine this year and it's been fun to watch. And there fun. That's the thing too. In florida state. They're fun. When's the last time you watched florida State and had fun. Unless you were laughing at. Yeah. The last time florida state was fun for me was watching a guy read a book shirtless in dance. So that's probably the last time florida State was ultimately. Yeah and then it just got boring that they were bad and depressing. That's true. That's true. That's gonna wrap it up for this edition of The Panic Group will see you this weekend after the N. C. State Clemson game.
