ACC Panic Room: Pack wanted respect, but blew the opportunity
Lauren Brownlow and Joe Ovies discuss NC State's loss at Miami, where the Pack made too many mistakes and now find themselves in an Atlantic Division mess.
Welcome to the A. C. C. Panic room alongside Lauren Brownlow. I'm joe Vyas. So I guess we should start with some apologies for me. I don't think you have anything, I don't think you have anything to apologize for. Uh My first apology goes to, my first apology goes to Tyler van Dyke quarterback for Miami who I'd spent a good chunk of time on thursday and friday on the show, making fun of what he had to say about the N. C. State game. About how yeah, they couldn't stop us last year. Also stuff I'm like, what did you do? Tyler that was that was Derek King last year to be fair to investigate. I get it. I'm just saying I'm just saying it's like I wasn't really confident about that particular thing. But you know what? He talked the talk and he went out there and he had a really a really good game. Yeah. Even statistically he did looking at it because usually usually his thing is like you look at his stats and you're like gross. No, no, he had a great game from start to finish. Um, And also you an apology Lauren because when we were talking about, yeah, this NC State Miami game earlier in the week, you pointed out Miami's second half weirdness right? They really wouldn't do much in the first half and all of a sudden they come out and have these monster second half. So my argument was, well look who they played, they played Virginia who's got a bad defense in north Carolina who also has had a bunch of defensive problems. So I'm not and there were both losses. I'm not really enamored with the idea that Miami might be too much of a threat against NC State. Consider against the state's defense is much better than what we've seen out of Virginia and much better than what we've seen out of out of north Carolina instead. You know I get there is an Isaiah more injury and everything else. But injuries are part of the game. And Miami is also banged up in this game considering they're on their third string quarterback right now. Um Yeah. N. C. State's defense had a lot of mistakes themselves all blown coverage and they lose that game. The thing about defenses in college football right is in my opinion unless you've got like, I don't know, let's say like an Iowa defense of Clemson defense right now. Whatever right? Unless you have a yeah. Yes Georgia thank you. Unless you have a defense like that you are prone to getting God that doesn't mean that some defenses aren't better than others. You know that doesn't mean that some defenses can't play better than others. We've seen north Carolina have you know pretty good moments defensively and then pretty bad ones. You know what I mean? And I think for state, part of the issue was just who they had played to that point which is not their fault. But my concern for state was that the one good offense they had played was Louisiana tech and they moved the ball against them fine. And so my concern was that when they played an offense that was capable of moving the football that it would be able to and that's kind of what happened. So I I feel like the theme of saturday night in joe Robbie stadium was about backing up what you say right? So obviously we start this conversation with crediting Tyler Van Dyke the quarterback from Miami for backing up what he talked about on thursday or Wednesday or thursday this week about N. C. State. Meanwhile NC State a good chunk of the conversation around the wolf pack was about respect right? You know N. C. State beats boston college Dave during their head coach is talking about why you know why is anybody talking about about us? I think at one point was like keep hating on us, yada yada. But he did say to Dave Doran's credit. I don't know what it is why we don't get discussed. You know maybe people didn't see our season last year where there are pretty resilient group But he said at the end of all of that if we just keep winning and take care of business then we'll be fine. Well Saturday night against Miami was an opportunity to do exactly that and for whatever reason because I guess this is about 98% of all college football teams that live this life. They had a classic. you picked a bad day to have a bad day and N. C. State had anything that could go wrong for them essentially go wrong for them and what ended up being a one possession game whether it's dropped passes on critical third down conversions, whether it's you know an honest mistake of a fumble recovery after a helmet had come off. You know I'm not gonna fall to kid for trying to play football and not having the situational awareness when he sees a live ball. Oh I can't do that because my helmet came off. I'm not gonna fault anybody for that sort of thing. And you know some like you talked about with the defense earlier unless you're one of these teams you're gonna have moments where you get got and I think that's what ended up happening to N. C. State. I thought that the way they closed out the first half it was going to carry over into the second half of the state was gonna kind of find their own similar to what we saw against boston college in the third quarter last week. But hey manny, I've clowned manny Diaz a lot uh and I clowned Tyler Van Dyke but they were the ones that had some resiliency and they bounced back and took advantage. Yeah I mean it's just look it's one of those years I'm sorry to like it's just one of those years where weird stuff is happening and it's gonna keep happening. And I mean, yeah, it just, it stinks because I think Dave had a point in what he said, like obviously it looked at the evidence in terms of what Tyler van Dyke had to say and what Dave Doeren had to say. I think you would have probably found more evidence lying and Dave Doran's corner of things. But it's just the way it is and and it's it's disappointing, you know what stinks about it too, because you know how I feel about this like triangle football, right? This is what happens to us around here whenever anybody gets something good going. It's like, well that was fun now it's going away. You know, while Wake Forest fans are like, hi, hello? Although, okay, you're making me nervous because I did get to watch that game, y'all are making me nervous. Well, what's funny about that was I had seen, I have seen Julia yesterday and um we're watching the end of the penn state Illinois game, the like nine overtime game. And we're just like laughing hysterically at the bad psychos football that was taking place uh as we were watching it in the hospital room. Um and I saw the score cause I didn't see the Wake Forest game in real time. I had to go fast forward through it, but it was almost like I don't need to watch this game. I know Wake Forest can move but my goodness, it wasn't the 70 points. It was 56.56. I was like whoa wait a second year. Well I was watching it live and they just kept like I'm like no dude guys I didn't even know about the nine overtime game. I didn't know that was my like conversation starter at the wedding. I was at I was like hey you guys know what happened in college football today And they'd be like no and I tell them that like 38 points how And I was like I don't know and I don't know that I want to know I just want to keep it like it is in my mind and I don't want to know how it was 38 points. I don't now to to back to N. C. State though and like triangle. But the thing the thing about N. C. State though um they're not out of it right? It's kind of what this is what kind of bothered me last night with some of the reaction that I was seeing from state fans. In my mentions where all of the pent up feelings about N. C. State and Dave Doeren specifically after nine years came out because fans fans were mad. I understand fans are mad at the blown opportunity and what do you do in this situation and you lash out at the coach that you haven't liked in the first place and I'm sitting here thinking to myself look like there was one like many, many Diaz out Coach Dave Doeren. No, he didn't mean many deals. Mandy's was directly responsible for an end of half touchdown by calling a time out when I call them out and Devin leary made him pay for it. So don't give me this business that somehow some way, Manny Diaz out coach Dave Doeren, that's just you being salty about the laws and you don't like Dave Dorn. Hey guys, listen, if you want an example, Mike McCarthy is on the sideline for the Dallas cowboys. He's won some games by accident to happen happens, right. So, but you know, in my thing is for the people lashing out. It's like, like I'm pretty sure that Dave Doeren told his wide receivers that catching footballs, it's kind of important to winning games. Like, yeah, sometimes sometimes you just don't have it. That being said despite the loss, it's not like NC State is completely out of it in the atlantic division. It's their first conference loss pit helps them by beating Clemson, uh, in pit yesterday. Uh, you can bounce back against Louisville. Who knows how Wake Forest season goes because we've seen a tendency with Wake Forest and their lack of death as a small private school, eventually catching up to them in late game in late season situations, which is probably why this game in Winston Salem people have kind of been optimistic about because it's later in the year. So if we kind of go at that point that this year is kind of weird. NC State's not out of it and it'll be interesting to see how a group that was resilient last year and we've talked to Dave Doeren about that resiliency carry over carrying over how they bounce back from this with Louisville coming up next I think to maybe there's a little bit of hurt feelings because of the fact that like they've never Dave Jordan's never beaten Miami, which is weird. I know that doesn't florida state thing like this, it's a little bit like that, right? It's, but it's one of those things too, where what state fans talked about a lot, well if we were in the coastal, it's like, well this is a team from the coastal, you've literally never beaten and you should have beaten this year's version of Miami, you know, it's just again, this does solidify my proof for my theory that everyone is the coastal usually and now Clemson's the coastal to welcome coastal. I believe the coastal is the friends we made along the way. Exactly yeah. Speaking of Clemson will close on the tigers, they benched DJ in their loss to pitt and so I'm not trying to sit here and tell you that DJ was good. I mean he got benched after he had a shovel pass disaster. Uh I think he had fumbled just before that too. Um and DeBow was very much like, it's 1000% on me and things like that. Usually when coaches say that I chalk it up to, okay, you're just deflecting for your team. But in this particular case, I do agree with Dab. Oh, it's on them because I think what's going on with the fascination at quarterback is hiding the rest of the team in a pretty bad drop off in skill position. We kind of saw this in the last, the last time we saw them in the college football playoff, right? Yeah, it's been a gradual thing. I feel like over the years, Yes, it, they don't have the new pumpkins anymore, you know? No, they don't. And that's where it's like, as much as you can put this on DJ, let's not like a couple of years ago before Trevor Lawrence finally took over, let's not forget kelly Bryant, right? And I always felt that kelly Bryant got a bad rap. I thought he did a perfectly acceptable job. But when you go back and you re contextualized that season and you see what's going on now, my takeaway simply is it's everybody around the QB position. That's the problem because remember DJ is the five star freaking recruit that every stall him about, unless this year, unless he had broken mentally somewhere along the way, which possible, like possible. It's possible. So I really do think that Dab oh is being completely honest and that is on them because they just have not, they've missed, they've missed. It happens to all programs where they get to a point, they can't reload all the time and they're reset is not going as well as some other reasons have gone. But I've seen this before and they don't just go out there right now and I'm not saying I'm not passing a judgment on this, but they prefer not to work the transfer portal that much and we've seen a lot of teams do that to have and have success and they don't want to do it that way and that's cool. But it might lead to more, you know, it might lead the years like this one. And I mean when I was listening to the Grand Lake and Mclean podcast, you know, both of them from the A. C. Network Mclean who used to play online in Clemson was saying that their game, not this past game, but the one before that it was like the worst o line play he'd seen by, by Clemson along and that's so it's everything like it's not just one thing, it's not just quarterback quarterback can't save you by by himself. He just can't McClain's matched on the sec network as well and he's absolutely right. Just, it's a whole total team failure is just that we're so accustomed being focused on the QB and Clemson's head and that's the other thing too is that Clemson's just had dudes right? I mean they they had to Shawn Watson kelly Bryant was fine, but understandably he wasn't Trevor Lawrence and that's why they went to them when they went to him and we saw the rest being there and then DJ comes in as like, oh, he clearly is the next guy. Like you've made this reference in the past. Like with Carolina basketball is like, all right. He's the point guard for the Carolina basketball team. So therefore he should be good. Right? And that's kind of where Clemson was with QBS. But you, there's just so many more moving parts with that squad. And when you don't have dudes around that guy, you're seeing this play out Clemson's defense is still good enough to keep them in games. But then much like much like NC State, your depth is only going to take you so far. And if you keep losing key players, then you're going to have some nights where you're gonna get got and when you're going up against Kenny Pickett, who is clearly on one this season? Well, we saw what ended up happening at pitt. Um, is there anything else we gotta cover? I mean, does that Virginia tech fans want us to talk about Justin fuente. Oh, that game was subject at least we know that they can still score points. That's a good point. It's a very, very good point florida state took care of business in the walt Bell bowl. Good for them. Yeah. On that note on that note, it's gonna wrap it up for this edition of the A. C. C. Panic Group. We'll see you all later in the week.
