North Carolina
ACC Panic Room: UNC pulled off the greatest regular season win ever
Joe Ovies and Lauren Brownlow break down the magnitude of North Carolina's surprising 94-81 victory to spoil Mike Krzyzewski's last home game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Welcome to the A. C. C. Panic room alongside Lauren Brownlow. I'm joe obvious it happened. Carolina actually did the freaking thing they ruined. Mike dostoyevsky's farewell game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. I feel like you deserve kudos for this. Don't do the fake humility thing. Here's what I got right and here's what I got wrong. I got everything that I said about lemon booty, right? Okay. Because At some point we had to have the realization that when you've got 96 former players, all the pageantry that took place ahead of this game. And then you add to that, the pressure of day after day of retrospective college game day being here, Carolina not wanting to be the ones that ruined the night. Okay, that's gonna mess with you. You, I talk for a living and you put me in front of a WRL camera and I'm like, oh, what do I do? So press your messes with you, right. So I was not surprised by the way the game started. And to be fair, my like bold prediction was watch Carolina lead at the half, things would settle down and then do with their matchups would ultimately be better, but Duke never settle down and they went to their bad habits at home. And this is where Carolina actually gets the most amount of credit. This wasn't Duke beating itself. No, this was Carolina with no subs, no turnovers, hitting shots, playing defense in Cameron and let me tell you, I could have used a sub and I was sitting down. Yes. Yes. I mean, look, it's very hot in there. That's all I'm saying brady man. It took a lot of love's early on in the year and he's actually become one of their better players as the season draws to a close. And I thought he looked like you after five minutes of being outside. He was flushed in that heat. Yet he powered through, hit big shots, even made some defensive plays. He overcame a really bad dunk attempt and that's actually a credit to hubert Davis. And I really do think that this conversation as much as it's been about mike, we didn't have one about hubert, hubert Davis is owed an apology by a subset of the fans who were complete entitled spoiled brats at the beginning of the season. You know what? It's not just the fans, there were people outside the program that were like when they would just take one loss to be like, is this not going to work? It's like he's been here a month. What's wrong with you? And if you, the pitt game for me was the, that was the head scratcher that made me go, okay. You know what? Maybe this team doesn't have it. But from that pit game on and you look at the totality of the last month and a half, they've actually improved and they've been able to weather storms. You saw this in the games leading up to today and you pointed this out to me on press row where it's like Carolina looked in the moment they had the composure. They never looked rattled once in this game. Honestly nobody did. Hubert Davis said at the beginning of the week when they started talking about this game where he said straight up we're not there for the pageantry, we're here to play a basketball game and that's exactly what they did. And you knew that you knew they were feeling that spoiler because Caleb love tweeted this after the game. Like you know ra ra only to take this l you know with the hashtag spoiler like spoiler squad. I asked him what he said to the students. Yeah I was like you can edit if you want. I told him to be quiet. I'm like okay there you go. That's the way to go about it. So look Hubert Davis is owed a lot of credit. I wouldn't be surprised if with this win Hubert Davis picks up a lot more A. C. C. Coach of the year votes that maybe people weren't expecting to make earlier in the week. This is why we have to have these conversations at the end of the year. I still think that steve Forbes will end up winning at the Wake Forest coach but hubert Davis with the way they close this out and the way they just ruined that night. I think he deserves he deserves a lot of credit for it. He does. Yeah I think Forbes will close it out. Um And I'm surprised because honestly I think that yeah, all he had to do was win this game and I think he wins. And Coach K I think they win it. And I thought another thing that really stuck out to me afterwards was um Coach K said this unprompted. There was nobody that asked him about a cot or the way he played or anything, let's not forget the top three player of the year candidates, right or who got help and Carol and Alonzo Williams, Williams is going to win it. Probably. So yeah, it's going to be him or Bangkok but it always is probably going to be him or Bacon if Carol had a great game. And there was a hot minute there in the first half where it looked like Ben Carol was going to go off for 20 something and 10 a national tv and he was going to have his big moment and that our recency bias was going to kick in and he was going to win it. I really thought that's where we're headed for a minute and then that's not what happened. And after the game, Coach K I don't think I've ever heard this before. You could tell me if I'm wrong, he called baby cot the player of the year in our conference. He has been all year and he was again tonight. I don't think it may not seem like a big deal with something else. But I don't think I've ever heard Coach K advocate for another player and another over a player on his own team. When a player in his own team as a candidate. That was wild. Maybe that was my way of making good for the blow by after the game and the handshake line. That wasn't his blow by those. It was carol. Well yeah it was Carolyn I think there's somebody else too. But to be fair to say like he didn't, he never takes these things well no he doesn't take them well. But also he did he did like I saw him like a minute before the game, right? He goes over to hubert. Hubert's like walking by, he wasn't even going to talk to him and he grabbed him and was like and they had a I'm making a joke. These are the things that people on social media get all worked up about. Things like the only thing that was a legit. There's actually, there's only one thing I saw on social media tonight in the win for Carolina and Duke's loss, which is the story of the game. Obviously Duke lost. There's only one thing I saw on social media that I have zero time for none. Zilch nada Maryland shut it, shut it, sit this one out in the corner. You don't belong to the conference anymore. You can't make the jokes. You're not the rival, sorry, this is what it is. And he was wearing Maryland's socks too. So true story. Now they tweet, they tweeted out this thing, you know where it's like it's the crying kid, the crying do kid. Like it was JJ Reddick senior, that one. That's what they tweeted out. God, where is that kid now? Where is that adult now? But anyway, so All right, a couple a couple more things about the game itself and like what this means going forward. It's entirely possible that Carolina wins this game. The emotional high of it and then lays an egg in Brooklyn. This team is still capable of that. By the way, I mean, I would probably, yeah, it's likely depending on what the matchup. It's also entirely likely that these two teams see each other again for the semifinals in in Brooklyn. So that's again, we could see this game again. Which will be fascinating because Duke plays better in that environment than they do here or at least like outside their building. And that's what I think is the most fascinating part of the season. For whatever reason, Duke is not the same squad at home. It couldn't just be the coach k final year. Like tonight made sense. But if you look at the whole year, the way they played at home, it's entirely different. And maybe it's something that they said after the Carolina win in Chapel Hill when they, when they beat the tar heels in Chapel Hill where they like being the villain they like going to other people's places, they like ruining nice, they feed off that kind of stuff. Carolina's players. They didn't say the villain, but they said similar stuff or something. Yeah. There is something in all athletes I think that want So there was a moment with the coach K program where they handed him some things and he talked about it. He was understandably not in the mood. He comes out and he says, you know, this was an unacceptable result. He was actually telling the crowd that was like, not like let me get this off my chest, right? And then he and he closes it out by saying the season is not over. This isn't part of the program. This is I mean, I'm sorry about this afternoon that no, please, no, please everyone be quiet and let me just say it's unacceptable. He said the same thing and K k has been trying to get through this team that you're gonna run into Hungary or teams. And maybe those hungrier team's when they're coming here because they want to ruin it for coach K. They know that, you know, the the the enormity of everything and maybe it'll be freeing that a because coach coach K to say after the game that he's glad it's over. Well he's glad I was talking to media members before. That felt that way too. I think I'm kind of that I'm kind of there? It's like, it was just so much build up and like what are we going to do for all this build up and it's like, imagine how he felt with all that. So I like, so I'm of the opinion and I said this earlier in the week on the radio show where once you get past this game it's entirely possible that Duke is fun and fancy free because this is done and, and, and they're, you know, people are going to bring it up and whatnot, but it's immaterial because they win a national championship, then they'll just say, well, you know what, ultimately we set out to do our goals. However, however, one last point before we get to the pump in the circumstance of everything. Number one on the list of things that can happen in a rivalry that you'll never be able to come back from right, like the ultimate ace. Like you just drop it on him. I got the big joker right? If they, if they beat him in the final, the final four or a national title game? Yeah, I'm just gonna go with baseline Final four or this. Number one is the big joker, Final four. Number two. What happened tonight? What happened tonight is one of those things where it doesn't matter what Duke does, there's gonna be a lot of fans that absolutely just go, oh yeah, but you want to talk about what happened on. Kay's farewell night and look, you guys just like I get that you want to have to come back and that's fine. You have plenty of other things you can come back with occasionally. I mean just kind of have to let them have that w, you know, shout out to the former Duke A D for for hopping in the panic room there anyway, I wish, I know that'd be cool, that'd be cool. But anyway, that was, I just want to make that final point about tonight and that it's one of these ultimate jokers that you dropped on on duke fans going forward. It's not a final four level obviously, but tonight is definitely something that is always going to be brought up. Like, oh yeah, I remember we made, we were the spoiler, we ruined it for you now about the day itself. I, you know, uh shout out to our friend Adam smith who likes to tease me that I usually say something like, you know, it shouldn't be a surprise work and I, and I jokingly told him that's somewhat unfair characterization, but I got what he was saying. I got what he was saying. So I'm here to admit that today did get to me, yeah, I mean the outside everybody's having a good time. You got 96 players all lined up as coach K is walking in like every so often I would look up and like, hey, there's jay, Williams, hey, there's Shane Battier, Hey, there's Cherokee participation, langan aging like Benjamin button up in here, like what is that about? And the part that's the part that got me and I almost feel bad having taken this picture, but I wanted to capture at least because you have all these greats right with great NBA careers of great college careers, national champions players that year, all that stuff and throughout the game they were fans and I caught myself like not watching the game and just watching them, like watching JJ Reddick sit there and do that like that cringe e face of, oh crap. Like Carolina keeps hitting shots and then looking up at the clock and then looking back at the court and you could see it kind of like happen like this realization of like man Caroline might actually do this. So that was, that was a wild experience that, you know, um, I feel lucky enough to have been here for that because it's not every day you get to see something like that unfold to get the greatest of all time, to close out his career here at Cameron Indoor Stadium with all his players watching and then have that overcome them in the final minutes. That was insane to say it was, it was a lot, it was a lot to take in. I feel exhausted and I'm not even done, I'm not close to them tonight. Oh man, this is, this is a lot, but you know, it's it's crazy and shout out to Armando Bacot though. You know, the first thing he did when he got back in the locker room was start crying because he's had a rough go of it here at Carolina. He's had some rough seasons and this meant a lot to him and I know it meant a lot to hubert because it meant a lot to him. And he's always been very candid with us. He dropped one swear today and he even said, he goes, I've always believed in us, maybe I'm delusional. And I'm just like, like he's very much like the voice of, I feel like the Carolina fan that's so frustrated but wants to love this team. He speaks for all of you when he talks to us, he talks to us like you guys do, which, you know, and I was happy for him because he's been great with us his whole career. And this was as he was that after the game, like he hasn't had a moment in his Carolina career. Like this is his first one like that. And that was again, tonight is the night that people will be talking about for a long freaking time, a long freaking time. So if you watched it awesome, if you were in the building, if you're a Duke fan probably sucked for you, but for the handful of Carolina fans that were in here to uh they were clearly enjoying themselves. Uh And we'll see what happens going forward again. It's entirely possible that Carolina flames out in the A. C. C. Tournament. Hey. But you know what they're in the tournament now they don't have to worry about. I mean that's the thing, it's funny we're sitting here fretting over their tournament chances and the entire time. And Julia and I've been talking about this too. It's like well if you beat Duke you're fine. I mean that'll that'll like that'll end any other discussion but that's not gonna happen. Right? So they're gonna have to go win a game in the in the sec tournament. Not anymore. They got their Q. One win on the road against what's probably not going to be a number one seed in the N. C. Double A. Right? I think that this I mean they'll probably, if they win the tournament, I think that the sec tournament but it's entirely possible that can be a number one seed but they're certainly not gonna get their choice of location. So that's gonna wrap it up. Oh don't say that because they asked for Chicago. Well David Warlock who runs the thing for the L. A. Did say. Yeah these are things that are asked of the overall number one seed. Oh boy. This is going to be so fun when they actually end up getting in Chicago and people are mad about it. Can't wait anyway. That's gonna wrap it up for this edition of the A. C. C. Panic room. We'll see you all getting ready for the A. C. C. Tournament next week.
