Antoine Green: "I just want an opportunity at the end of the day"
UNC wide receiver Antoine Green speaks with the media after running routes at the 2023 UNC Pro Day. Green says he's been told he may get picked between the fourth and sixth rounds at this year's NFL Draft.
A g, what is this whole process been like for you? And like you said, you been trapped, where all have you been, who all have you talked to and like, what has this been like as you're getting closer and closer to the draft? Yeah, so, uh it's been a great experience for me. I was training out in Pensacola and it's like a little vacation area so, really want much to do. So it was a great spot for me to just disconnect and go to work. And, uh, I mean, of course, I went to the combine, that was a pretty good experience just being out there with all those guys that I haven't even met for real and just being able to talk football and build relationships with people out there. So a few teams that I've, a few teams that I've spoken with is like the Packers, the Broncos, the Lions, uh, a few other teams as well. Do you have any concept of, of what, er, what range you're going in? What teams told you which is what your agents? Uh, yeah, so they're basically, they're saying like four through six. Ok. Mhm. What was this like out here? Uh I mean, it was smooth. It just, I fall back on my training. I already know I was gonna come here and do good. So I felt great out there running around. I felt like I could do more too. What did you want to show off to? Uh just that I can run intermediate routes? Because I've heard that was a concern, but I don't really think it's too much of a concern with me. So just being able to go out there and put that on I take for them. Was it this, this is an interview? Yeah. Uh I mean, of course you got some butterflies but just, I grew up playing football so it's kind of second nature to me and like I said, I just fall back on my training AJ what are some of the things you think you can bring to an NFL offense? Yeah. Uh I think I can stretch the field pretty well. So just being versatile and just being able to, like I said, stretch out a defense in terms of going through the routes and everything today. It, it did, it feel weird like it's dead silent in here. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, it is kind of weird when you got a whole bunch of eyes on you and I just try to block it out and like it's just me and the quarterback in here and just run my best route. Did you have to, did you have to ask like, no, he just, he just jumped right in like he was all go for us because I mean, me and Josh and Jay, we just got that bond. So the chemistry that we have, he knew he was gonna come out here and throw us great balls and we was gonna catch it. So did you talk to anyone before this about what a pro day experience would be like? Uh No, not really. I mean, coach Moody. That was it AJ what stood out about your conversations you've had with teams? Um uh I mean, all of the conversations kind of fall into the same circle but just talking about the stuff off the field and just talking about my character and what I can bring to the to the organization. What have you wanted them to know about you? Uh That I'm a, I'm a down to earth person. Uh It's a lot that people don't know about me such as like, I wanna own a zoo one day. People find that surprising but that's just something small that I've been telling people. Yeah, before let's, let's talk more about the zoo. What does that, what does that look like? Uh I mean, right now I got, I actually got two dogs and two cats at my house, so I just always grow up 11 animals and that's just me. So, so does that mean the team mascots at all is that, is that something you think about the future? Not? Are you talking or big time? Like, yeah, you go ahead. You mentioned you put a lot of work in the Pensacola this, this off season. What, what does that look like? I just, you know, waking up in the sun going down with his type thing. Yeah. So uh I know for there was like three different groups. I work, I work out at like 10 30 in the morning, then come back and work out at three. So it was just training for the 40 short shuttle, all that type of stuff. What were you, you know, you had kind of quite a journey at UN C with injuries and whatnot and some great success as well. What would you kind of remember about UN C? How do you put into words, your experience? Uh Yeah, I'm, I'm grateful for the entire experience that I've had here. Uh It was a short lived experience but um I ain't got no complaints. Everything happened for a reason and it developed me to be a better man and build a character throughout my uh adversity that I faced. So I'm definitely appreciative of everything that's happened. Did you live the expectations? I knew you were a big recruit coming out? Yeah, I mean, coming in, of course, I went off to the, to the best start because of injury. But through that, like I said, I learned a lot about myself and just being able to develop my character over time, how hard was it to envision? Like you would have this opportunity to go to the league when you were sitting on the side, on an injury. Uh I mean, it wasn't hard to envision because at the end of the day, I just trusted the process, I knew that opportunity was gonna come at the end of the day. It's just about what I was gonna do with it. So I always seen this coming. That's what I remember. I said to you during the season that you look like you've gotten faster. Um Like, how, how are you running now? Like what has been the best time you put up lately? And I mean, are you continuing to get faster? Uh Yeah, I think I'm, I think I've been getting a little faster. I did a little speed training over like the course of January and February and, uh I put up a 447 at the combine, which was surprising to some people, but I always know I had that speed. What did you put up today? I didn't run 40 today. I just did. When was the last time you caught up off from Drake from Drake? Uh I've been, I've been back in for about two weeks now. So ever since I've been back, we was just throwing and when we were in San Diego, did you get hurt before in, like, bowl practices. Is that right? Uh, I mean, I wouldn't, I just rolled my ankle. It was a little minor roll. It wasn't nothing measure though. But you were out there, right. Yeah, I was out there. Yeah. But you got hurt when we were out there. Yeah, when you're running routes on air like that. I, I think if people don't really understand what's going on and they're gonna laugh at it like you actually learn from this. What, what do you see when people learn from like this? Uh I think one thing that they would look for is just like your pad level because there's certain indicators that D BS pick up on, such as like standing up at the top of a route and they just know when you're gonna break. So just being able to, to illustrate that I could stay low the whole time being a tall guy and just run through the routes. What routes did you run today? R and slant uh curl speed out a few crossers fades and like a uh a pivot. And where have you been, where have you been living? Where have I been living back home? Just uh yeah, I went back to Florida for like three days, like right after the combine and then I've just been back in Chapel Hill. It's kind of a big picture question. But have there been, has there been anything that's truly shocked you about this pre draft process something you never would have expected. Uh No, not really. Just because I've, I've gotten stories from other people that have just told me what the process is like. So nothing was really shocking to me. Who are those guys that you uh you, the guys you rely on that you talk to about this process? Uh Yeah, I say my older brother is definitely one. He, he is somebody that actually got me into football. So just being able to talk with him about everything that's going on and get some guidance from him has definitely been beneficial. Is there a team or teams out there? You think you fit in well with? Uh I don't got one specific, I just want an opportunity at the end of the day and that's all I really need.
