Brind'Amour: Feel really good that we'll figure it out
Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour has been the leading storyline as questions swirl about his future with the organization. Brind'Amour feels confident a new deal will get done
First and the rumors around your contract situation and, and where that stands. Yeah, I had a great conversation yesterday with Don and then again this morning and I feel really good. Maybe we'll figure it out quickly. And, um, yeah, I'm not, I'm not concerned. Go ahead, Ryan. Uh, you know, uh, we talked to Don yesterday, he said the x rays were to him were negative and, you know, obviously he wasn't out there tonight, just, uh, maintenance. They just keeping him letting him rest. Yeah. Yeah, most, uh, most probably see him next practice. Go ahead. Chip. Right. Matt Rempe hasn't played a lot of Bennetts for the Rangers this year, but he's gotten a lot of attention for the way he plays. Just what, from what you've seen. I know he hadn't seen him on the ice but what have you seen of him and what he brings to, to their lineup? Well, yeah, he's certainly been impactful, you know, like you said, I don't, he has maybe not played much, but the time he's been out there certainly notice I, um, you know, big physical guy and he's, uh, you know, certainly doing his job. That, uh, they want to do so. Um, they got a lot of other guys we gotta worry about. Well, go ahead, Rod this morning. Uh, Freddie was named a finalist for the Masterton Trophy. Can you just speak on how deserving he is of that? Well, it definitely, you know what he had to go through, um, this year has been, been tough and I think, uh, more just the uncertainty, right of what he, what he had and not knowing, um, what he even play again. I mean, I think that had to creep, creep into his, his mind and then to come back the way he has I think is, it's just been a great story all the way around and hopefully it's, uh, it's got even better ending. What, what did you learn from Peter Laviolette specifically in terms of the way he empowered you as a captain? Um, and the ways that sort of you've, it seems like you've repeated some of that with Willie and, and Jordan. Um, is that accurate? And, or were there there's, is there other big takeaways from your time with him? Well, I've been asked that over the years just, you know, you always ask who do you um take most from and you take from everybody, you know, the good and the bad. And I think with LA it's, it's definitely my memories are just good. You know, I thought he did a great job of letting the players, you know, be themselves and kinda give them a lot of confidence and, and what they were their abilities. And I think you see that every time you go somewhere new, it seems like there's a, you know, big push there. So, um, yeah, I mean, and he obviously knows his stuff so that kind of goes forgotten it. To me. What makes him good is all the other stuff. It's, it's empowering his players and, um, certainly has a good feel for the room, Rod. What ha what happened in the past? I know you don't think it means a lot, but your power play was good this year. It was good in the first round that helps you even things out a bit from the past where the Rangers maybe had a step above, you know, your team does that, obviously that's important. Does that make the fact that you guys rely so much on dominant five on five play even more important that maybe that's even now? And I certainly hope so. Um, obviously every game and every series kind of start from scratch. But, um, and we know they have a tremendous power play, super talented team and, you know, I think we've closed the gap there. Uh, certainly, and it's gonna be a big part of it, you know, uh, there's lots of penalties called, that's, you know, we gotta make sure our power play is gone and it's not, I, I haven't seen too many teams shut their penalty kill down or their power play down. So, you know, that's gonna be a big challenge too. Evan, go ahead. Rod now that there's for however many days it's going to be before the next round. How does the team, how do you kind of balance resting up getting better and, you know, taking away that physical adversity, but also staying sharp, that's the trick. Um And because we don't really know when we're, we're getting at it again. So I, I think mentally it's nice to decompress a little bit. There's so much I don't wanna call it stress, but there's just a lot on when the, as soon as it's on the game start, you're, you're, you're in it. And so I think we've taken a little time here to just decompress and then, you know, step on the gas again. So, um, yeah, there's a little bit of a balance there. Um, but at this time of the year, you know, you don't know how much you're getting better, you know, they just, you're practicing, it's more just making sure you're reinforcing things and trying to stay sharp. Don said that Don said that pesch is, you know, hopefully gonna play in this series. Do you have any idea as to when that could happen? And, and has he gotten back on the ice yet? So, yeah, I think basically I'm just, you know, count them out, but if we can get him in here. That'll be a big bonus. Luke. Uh, you gave Jack Jury some more responsibility in, in game five and obviously he's, he earned that, um, going into that game. But ho how did, what was sort of your thinking behind doing that? And then obviously kind of how you felt about the results and what he can potentially do in the middle for you guys. I liked his year, you know, and, and started out, he didn't, you know, he's probably not in that role as, as much and then he kind of just, I mean, he earned it, I guess that's the simplest way to put it. I mean, every time you put him there, like good things happen and again, last the other night, so we know what we're getting, you know, you, you're getting that consistent effort and, and, and he can make plays and obviously, um, this time of year it's all about that, right? It's that consistency and, um, like I said, at the end of the day, he's, he's earned Einstein, we'll take three more pat then. Kurt and Mike Rada Jarvis is obviously having a great year. Have you seen that effect? Just kind of how he conducts himself with the other guys in the locker room at all. Jarvis. Yeah, I mean, he's had a great season and I think, you know, obviously, first round he was really, really good and he's a big part of what we're doing as you see, you know, we use him a ton and no matter where we seem to chuck him, he, he finds a way to get it done. And I mean, that, that's really, to me the thing that stands out the most is just his versatility but his, his willingness to just whatever you throw at him, he, he, he takes so he's been very big, uh, not a surprise, but it's certainly been a big bonus for us, Ro. Ro from time to time you talk about it. It's mostly what you do that you have to be concerned with your team. But I'm wondering, is, is the movement from one series to another? You've got this block of games against the Islanders now, it's a block of game against the Rangers. Is it relatively a lot to implement or is it fairly small tweaks at this point knowing you've already been through 80 plus games? You know, your first point is the key. You gotta, you have no chance if you don't get to your game, but now you definitely have to understand what their game is too. And, and so there's an element of that, but you better get to your game first or it doesn't, you have no chance. So, um, you know, that's what everybody's doing. You understand what they're gonna do and the good teams are actually, you know, somewhat easier to, to watch and understand what they're doing because they are consistent in what they do. That's what makes them good. Um They have their dynamic players as they kind of the, I think I called the, the extras, you know, because you can't really guard against some of that, the talent that they have. Um, but at the end of the day to your point, I mean, we have to find a way to get our game going. Uh Rod just, uh I covered a lot of that 2017 Stanley Cup run by the Penguins and, uh, Genzel was obviously unbelievable. I think there was still a lot of people wondering if that was a fluke and yet he's continued to be a point, a game player throughout his postseason. What is it about him that allows him to be so successful? And, and also do you feel like he maybe was a little too unselfish in the first round and probably has to get back to shot volume? Yeah, I, I think to answer the first question and he's just a very intelligent hockey player. So I think, um, you know, that there's no surprise why he would succeed at any type of game and, you know, adapt to it so that, that come to a new team, all that if you're a smart hockey player, you can adapt quicker. And I think that's why he has, he's seamless transition. Um, do we wish he could shoot more or whatever? I mean, that's, yeah, I'd love to see him score more goals and, but yeah, that's part of what makes him, I think a great player too. Is he is unselfish? All right. Thanks for, thanks everyone. Catch your name.
