Brind'Amour: 'You got to fight for everything. Even then, it's not enough, sometimes'
Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour talked to the media between Game 2 and Game 3 of the second-round playoff series against the New York Rangers. The Rangers lead the series 2-0.
Well, I'm not sure you asked last night about get this off being a healthy scratch. Just what end of that decision? And will he be back in the lineup tomorrow possibly? Um Yeah, I don't know. I, I just think I thought I would change it up a little try to get a little, you know, Max had been practicing well and wanted to give him a chance. So that was really what went into that. What are some of the most, obviously, they're a talented team, the Rangers, but what are some of the more frustrating things about playing them in a seven game series that makes it so hard? Well, they're a good team. So there's, you know, everything you gotta get, you gotta fight for everything and then even then it's not enough sometimes, right? Obviously. So, um, no weaknesses, you know, I mean, the games have been real tight, there's a play here or there and that's, we gotta keep fighting to try to get that extra play because that's really what it's coming down to. We'll see, we'll see how Freddy's feeling today. I mean, we, we'll make that decision tomorrow, but I think Freddie's been good. So I'm not, that's not a concern. It's more how he's feeling. Is there, is there, is there a concern that Peter hasn't played in so long? No, not really. He's, he's shown both guys, one guy missed three months, came in and played great and the other guy has done that too. Uh, so that would not be a concern. Is it more so just a 5050 battle wrong side here or there or do you think the rangers are doing no good, good? We know what they're trying to do. They know what we're trying to do. You know, we're trying to make a little adjustments here or there, but last night it was just kind of tough luck really. Um, couple bad bounces and, you know, they're getting pucks to the net, which that's what you do like power plays, you gotta do and the difference is on with the, this power play. You, you make a mistake that they put in the net and you don't get a second chance, stand out to you on film about what you guys are doing on the power play so far. Well, we gotta do a little more of what, what I just talked about. Um That's for sure. We only had some chances but you gotta get, you know, obviously, you know, score and so we gotta do that. We gotta get a little more at night, a little more inside. They're keeping us to the outside a little too much and we're, we're settling for that. So that's, that's one area makes so many saves in a game. Is it more a factor of not finding the right shots or just, you're just getting a great goalie performance against you guys? I mean, I thought there was a lot of great shots in that game all, all alone in front of that and, you know, he's a great goal. It's obvious we know that coming in and we just got to keep, you know, you look at the goals, we, we, we score basically been deflections or stuff that you can't do anything about. And that's what we're gonna have to keep trying to do. 2nd, 2nd period takes that shot hits across totally. I mean, there's a bunch of them, you look at all the series, you know, there's one little play here and there that could change the whole outlook of the game, which changes the whole outlook of the series. So we just, we gotta just keep, like I said, we gotta keep trying to find ways to create as many of those opportunities as we can and hopefully we'll, we'll get a, a breaker bounce here too and you know, that's what we're gonna need. Tell you guys it's not obviously not to go battle, but it's been done before. I mean, you know, of course, I mean, but, you know, you don't look at the big picture or you, you're always just, what do we do to win that one game and then go from there. I mean, just most of it's been the top guys kind of producing. How do you feel your top pair kind of handle that matchups? I, I think we've done really well. I mean, you know, it's talk about that part of it. I mean, you're not gonna just shut those guys down, I mean, they're elite players. So I think we've done a pretty good job on that, you know, certainly five on five. but, you know, there's in a whole other part of the game, we gotta get a little better at too. Did you talk to the officials last night or call anyone about Drass attempt at it? Yeah, I don't, they don't talk to us that after watching the tape, what do you think of your, your top line? It seemed like they were really at times dominating the game last night. Yeah, a good game, you know, they, they, they were all over it, you know, see bass especially had, I think two or three in overtime, all alone. Well, they made great saves on them against him, obviously had a couple of goals and sesh was impactful. So, it, um, they, they need to be that if we're gonna, you know, find a way to get, get back in the, what are they doing when they, when they play like that? Like, what, what drives that, um, well, they work hard as the three guys that are honest players and very competitive. So, and they're good. Well, that's a pretty good mix. Is Tony bringing some, does he bring something special in the offensive zone? I mean, you're, you're prepared to have him go the length of this series with every passing game. I imagine he's getting closer to being, uh, a guy who can do some things a little differently, as you said, he's a different player than Pesci. Well, he's been good. No question. He, he had a couple of good chances, set up a couple of guys just, you know, he, he, he was good. Um, he's been good all over to be honest, if you really break down his game. So, um, like we talked about earlier, it tough year in a sense that he didn't get in much, but he's certainly, uh, playing well right now. Would you get the point with your power play where you consider switching personnel around or do you think it's just a matter of guys committing to the playing the right way? Well, they, they play the right way. It's just, we gotta execute a little better. We did change it around a little bit. We had a couple of different looks there. But again, it's, it's, it's just more about the overall, I don't know if it's personnel. We have good personnel. That's not the issue and you will touch, you, touch you that skater and you know, what do you think? Am Ma is? Well, I didn't get much of an opportunity, you know, I, I kind of shorten the bench right away. It was kinda not really a fair assessment. All right. Thanks Rob. Thanks for your time. Thanks Rob.
