Carolina Panthers
Burns: 'I've got big things to accomplish'
After the Carolina Panthers' joint practice with the New York Jets, linebacker Brian Burns addressed why it was important he participate training camp while going through contract negotiations.
Uh, it was cool. Uh, it's, it's, it's pretty nice to, you know, work the moves. You've been working on this, this off season, this training camp or somebody new that hasn't seen them. So, uh, it's pretty satisfying, I guess when it works. You know what I mean? So those are my game time reps for real. Um Yeah, it was dope. Good day, good day, good day. Somebody that's known to be a, how's that gonna help your game? Um, it'll help. I mean, he definitely, you know what I'm saying? Like you just say, he's a veteran super vet, he got a lot of experience, I think he's going on what year 13? Um, he's only been here a day and he, he's, he's giving me a, a lot of knowledge, uh, just on some things I haven't even thought about. So, um, it's nice when you, uh, when you can talk to rush, you know what I'm saying? And bounce ideas off each other. So it's cool for me what's been the most challenging aspect of it? Um, nothing really, it's pretty natural. Um, I would say just getting more reps at it. Um, you know, uh being able to, to switch, switch that, that mentality off when I have to drop. Um That's the main thing really. I can, I can say that's the main thing, change and with the position change that you're now in your natural position, can you explain that there's a lot of things that come natural? Uh um Yeah, sure. I don't know what to say to that. There's a lot of things that come natural. It's a natural position for sure. I feel like I'm, I'm natural in both positions. It is whatever. I mean, it's only practices but the way it ended stopping Rogers play for fun is that something that can kind of, that can carry over for his defense? Yeah. Um, but I believe in staying even kill, you know what I mean? So, I mean, obviously it was a good day for us, but we still have to go on that on the tape and figure out those flash faces they had and those, those busted coverages or whatever, whatever we had that we messed up on, we had to go figure that out and become more dominant. And that's just the perfectionist in me because I really believe in his defense and I think I won't have any weak points. To be honest, how much influence has had on you so far in the good and just learning some of the old tricks to play outside linebacker and base from that stuff. You talk about and coverage not just pass as well. Yeah, mainly in the coverage aspect and the scheme aspect and how everything fits. Uh We have a lot of conversations about that, but he's basically, like I said, improving my IQ and like I said, like we, uh we, we'll break down the film and he'll tell me different ways to look at certain things and different ways to get what I want, you know what I mean? As far as the skies and whatnot. So, uh yeah, he's definitely been an asset you see from the defense and did you see it? Uh I want to see edge. Uh I wanted to see uh how locked in we were, you know what I'm saying? Focus like everybody focus to that, to that job and, and, and um focus on details. Um I feel like we did that for sure. And uh all in all being a pro uh I feel like we handled ourselves very well out here, you know what I'm saying? It wasn't too many uh fights. Uh So I feel like we handed ourselves pretty well and um we had all around good practice going against a guy like Rogers in an environment like this. Um I mean, a rod is a rod. Uh He's gonna make his plays, uh veteran quarterback, he knows how to, you know what I'm saying, disguise things, you know, how to, how to figure out defenses and whatnot. Uh He got me a couple of times on the play action. Like he, he's good at it so he's good at what he does. So, um having that, having that is good. He keeps you honest. So you, you find joy being a part of the spectacle, whether it have the film crew or the ravenous fans or, and just the joint practice. This is the first of this kind for football this season. Yeah, I mean, it's cool. I mean, this is a hell of a lot of cameras out here with the hard knocks and the mic up and all this, you know what I mean? But when it come between the white lines, I don't see none of that. So I'm, I'm kind of in my own world at that point last year down the stretch, playing playoff type of games, those atmosphere games, first time. Really? In your career here when you've had a chance to experience that, is there a car effect for you and the rest of that room this year for that? It was, it was, it was, it was smooth. Um, you know, just to have that taste and that feel of being that close, you know, it was, it's something that I never felt before. So it was a little bit, a little bit of pressure, but I'm glad I got that feeling. So now going down, down the stretch now I won't be, you know what I'm saying? I won't have all that weight on my shoulders. You know I'm saying, lock in and do what I have to do. When you first got here, you talked about how important it was for you to be at camp with your guys. And now toward the end of camp and you've really just kept going full go. Just what was important is it to you to always be kind of full participating now that you can, you're just giving your, um, mainly because I said I got a season to prepare for. So, um, me sitting out or me not being here wouldn't do me or the team any good. Um, like I said, I got, I got big things to accomplish and I believe in this team and, and I'm a, I'm a big piece of that so I can't miss and, uh, like I said, I got, I got things I wanna do. So me sitting out with a, I'll be a lot more, I'd be a lot worse than what you're seeing today. You feel me if I wasn't here. So, uh, that's it. J hi, punctuated the practice with interception. He, um, he brings a lot of juice. Uh, he's a lot like, uh, in that, in that aspect, but, um, he's been a ball hawk this whole camp. Uh, I think he has maybe four interceptions in the training camp. So, uh, he's been a ball hawk. He's been my bad. He's been a ball this whole time. And, uh, he's really been making a lot of plays. So, yeah, I'm excited for him.
