Canes ready for Rangers: Lots of talent, a long slog to Stanley Cup Finals
The Carolina Hurricanes skated Monday morning knowing they face the New York Rangers beginning Wednesday.
I don't know, that's a tough question. I think everybody presents challenges and almost very similarly the high end talent, you know that I was there with boston, that's obviously there with new york. Mhm. So there's a lot of similarities to be honest with you. There's a lot of former rangers on this team. You think that might help, like emotion wise. I don't think, I don't think we're gonna need help into motion and I think at this time of year, um no, I don't think that's becomes a huge issue and probably get my storylines for everybody. But I think we'll be emotionally, emotionally is usually not an issue at this time. What do you like best about your team? And conversely, what maybe you feel maybe it needs more work possible? Well no, I don't have any concerns were going pretty well. Um you know, we know how it always comes down to this place here, they're your top guys gotta be good. You know, obviously, you know, we don't want to take eight or nine penalties, We ran into that a couple of games, but they don't either. I mean, nobody wants to do that. So just play our game, play to the best of our abilities. That's festival at this point. Are you going? And just expecting me to be the guy? Well he is the guy. Yeah, I mean, tell Freddy even touches the ice, it's it's not even a conversation, so and anti has just been obviously you're doing great. So That's an easy one. I would, I would hope so, especially if we can you can move on but and again, until he gets out there with us. It's just it's not you might as well stop asking me in the midst of a series. You are, you're often like you guys just want to get on the ice, but are you happy to have a Wednesday starting? So Tuesday just to get the extra practice at this point in years? What are you practicing? Go over stuff in the video room and that. But you guys just want to play so that doesn't probably help us. But um, are there any positives at all? Are there any positives at all for getting that extra day of rest going into the second round? Uh We would if we mean maybe for a couple of guys that got nicks and bruises, maybe that helps. Um gets me to a baseball game Tuesday that I wouldn't have gotten to go to. So there's a positive. Did you enjoy yesterday's baseball game that game I did enjoy. Thank you. Yeah, that was good. But that's not the game. I'm referring to One of the challenges in your four coaching staff when you only have about 48 hours to twist the lot of you going into Boston for two weeks and then you have about 48 hours, to well what do we know this thing going? One thing about when we just played him? Not too long ago too you're watching. I mean I don't think teams are changing too much, they got them to where they got, you know, that that's why they're successful. So I think both teams understand what his team is trying to do. We know we want to try to, you know, stop that they that they do and I think they know what we're trying to do and they're going to try to, you know, obviously stop that. So um again, always just comes down to your execution on how much do you think it helps ranted that he's kind of had a series essentially, because again, he came in on game one and had not started a playoff game. How much do you think that affects the guy just to be in the mixed peace of mind and confidence in himself? I think it's been huge. So um like I said, it's it's with Freddie not being available, I mean it was an easy decision and you know, he stepped up, so that's huge. You guys were fighting for a division title when you're playing the rangers down the final stretch of the regular season? Those games meant something during, during that time, um Is there any experience that you guys can take from that, that you that's kind of what you're asking about, you know, do you the preparation time and well we've we've had time because we played against them recently. Um So you're gonna, you know, go back to that film especially and you know, build off of that and obviously their recent games, but the end of the day, again, it's always the same story. It's, you know, can we get to our game, you know, and they're gonna say the same thing which team does it the best as a team that should win. Did you get a chance to watch any of that series for strangers? It's great, it's great. Hockey was entertaining, you know, it's it's amazing how it comes down to play here and there. And the difference between moving on and not so every little play matters, talked a little bit about how the first round is around, do you think in some small way, especially in the game seven, it kind of releases that valve a little bit to get out of the first round, take a breath out of breath, but you know, not have that kind of pressure. Yeah, there's it's it's different kind of pressures as you go along, but for sure that first round and the emotion, everyone's playing lights out. And I guess what I said, I think it's the toughest round most physically emotionally, you know, everybody's into it and then as it goes along, it's just there's different things that are hard, it's hard to stay emotionally engaged for two months and it's hard for the fans to stay in motion engaged to. I mean, it's just everything about it, it gets harder and harder on the team that can stay with it as a team that, you know, generally obviously comes out on top, how did you handle that as a player when you go to the second series, the transition of that, that process? Well, you just refocus and kind of, you try to reboot and and almost forget what's going on and you know, get back to, okay, this is like starting over and that's really how you have to focus it because if you look at the big picture, it's it's Donaldson and it's long and you know, man, we got, we just went through a two week rule and we've got hopefully six more weeks of that, like that's that, that's honestly that's way too, way too much to think about. But if you just Narrowed down to two weeks series and you know, throw everything you got at it, I think that's the best way to process. Alright, thanks for a good team. I mean, I could care less what we, you know, we just got to worry about what we're gonna do here real good team with a power play, high end, you know, obviously I know from experience but a lot of firepower and a great go away, right? So it's a resilient team as you guys seen down 31 down to nothing to nothing down to one down three to just find a way to come back and win games. So they got a lot of uh sure they got a lot of confidence going in this round but sort of we you've got plenty of booze in boston, I'm sure you'll get some booze in new york. Do you do you like that? I could care less. It doesn't matter who gives me, Some people say it's a continent. I don't it doesn't matter if you want to be my guest, what do you want A person skating up the ice? You know, I got a lot of respect for and he's a great player, has been a great player for a long time. He's got unbelievable player with the puck. I don't mind the other stuff. I mean I know the fans like to like to get into a little bit. I happen to like it and I like to do it back to him as well. He does it to me, he's not a big deal, he's he's a gamer, great player. Chris Kreider has had a career year this year. How have you seen him just, I mean obviously you know, I know you have been there this year but have you seen him just grow as a player? Yeah, great player, a great shot. He's probably the best guy in front of that in the NHL especially on the power play. I think he scored 13 power play goals and how many reflections and stuff but a lot he's taken his game to another level. He's older, he's a big time leader there and stuff so it's kind of guy we gotta watch out for, he's got the top of the shots that he's got great speed. You can beat anybody. It's about one on one speed wise. So we'll be, we'll be watching. What do you like about the way you guys match up against the rangers compared to the boston series. Similar teams, boston and new york are a little similar in some ways. I think they both play, they both play a solid 60 ft game, 200 ft 62 200 ft 200 ft game. I think that when we're arguing that we're staying in the box, you guys are probably gonna be the same thing 1000 times this week and the next week, whatever. But when we're on our game, we're staying out of the box. I think we're very confident that we're gonna, no matter who we play, that we're gonna come out on the winning side. Teams are really, you guys know teams at this point of the year, Everybody's playing everybody. Is there any value familiarity with you and the other rangers? Former rangers guys like having familiarity? Yeah, I guess for myself defending them, you know, and some stuff that I can tell the other guys, I feel like everybody knows. But that's a good question because I think that there's some stuff that especially at the florida doing and then, you know, some detail. I'm not going to give out anything, but I think that it's just it's almost habit right? And I'm sure they're gonna say the same thing about me and the girls locker, what what he might do at the point where you just start to pick up on habits. Some guys I think we might be able to use, what do you think they are saying about you and I don't know you guys probably think mean things but I think that's the nice thing is the most dangerous player. A lot of dangerous players. I mean you can look at it a different way if you want to look at it and say Fox either way he could break the puck out and give them to the dangerous players constantly and you know and be the fore check and stuff. You can look at it that way. Then you can look and say the you get the ozone you got with the puck in the snake advantage that they got a lot of firepower and we think we know that and they've added some more firepower to the group to post deadline. So but I like to look at it and say so do we I think we got more firepower. I think we got the list goes on and on our team right. This goes all the way down the line up and we got the that could do it And we got great goaltending. So we're gonna be focusing our team. I think we know and respect what they could do offensively with the puck. But I think we're gonna be right. Yeah, I mean he's played all different positions and with different guys it's tough when you come over the deadline, right, you only have 20 games, 15 games to get used to everybody. But max is first of all, he's a really good player, high end skill and speed, but it's also real feisty too. He brings a little bit of the attitude of the team and and just I think a little bit of swearing that we needed. So he shows up in big games. Obviously you guys see that he scores two big goals in game seven and stuff. That's the kind of stuff. He feeds and he feeds off the crowds and big games and stuff. And that's uh that's why we got him. What's what's your philosophy on on you guys having three days rest going into the next round. I mean, Roddy says practice at this point of the season. It's kind of null and void and I'd like to hear your thoughts on that. You just get your legs moving to practice. That's really all it does now. You're not really digging into certain things. I mean you're gonna work on the power play your movie and you get your legs moving. You don't want to be sitting around all day. But this is actually I'm gonna like to play tomorrow. But even two days restless nights, you played every other day and we we went seven, obviously we would like to go a little bit less than seven, but we go seven so everybody else did it too right besides two series. So it is what it is, we're not worried about rest. You just gotta be ready to go take care of the body and get ready for a series with playing in front of rants. What does that feel like now that you're used to him at a day in day out basis? I thought you were great. I mean he was saved against Taylor Hall in the first period of two and one that boston had there is I mean, I don't know what the game would have been like in boston scores there. I still like to think we would have one but it's it's a game changing save, right? 00 instead of one nothing. And at your home crowd I gave what I gave boston a lot of life and he made a lot of saves like that. Even when we were down in boston was to one, he's making big saves, he's been really good for us. So I mean we we got a lot of trust in him and you know, I think he's gonna continue to play like that if he does, we're gonna have a lot of success is easy to play in front of him. Some goaltenders little different style can change how you have to approach things is easy to play in front of it I think so I think all of us have always been great and he's got such a like a calm demeanor to him in the net and he doesn't get rattled even if he does let him go when we go down, there's no like yelling or sticks like you know some goalies are some goals, get a little fired up, but he's great, he's played really well for us and like I said we trust anyone we have in there but so far around the great big big series for you and Jacob in the first round. Do you think you guys are the best pair? That's a terrible question. I love I love our defense, I love fashion and shape their, I love sweet and cozy and and I think that me and have done a real good job. That's that's not a question I'm gonna answer. I love I love this team so we're good. Yes you can ask that, I like that, no offense to anybody else I've had as a partner, I loved, I loved playing marc Staal and uh you know one of my favorite teammates for a long time but the slab was just I mean it's one of the top defense in the game, my opinion. I've told you guys, I think he's the best defensive defenseman in the game and you guys see that on display in game seven on sunday, the way he was just swallowing guys one on one and you know, it's tough guys to defend to write the pasternak's anniversaries and he was just able to get them pinned him up against the wall. Now the puck's going the other way. So when he does that, I'm sitting on the other side of the ISIS, so I'm like, all right, let's go up the ice. Makes makes the game easier on me. So he's been great. He's a great guy. You guys know how good of a person he is and stuff good teammate. And uh, we expect nothing but that every game from what do you think you've picked up from him from the game? Uh, I think that defensively I think we've worked together really well. I like to think that he hoped, I hope he thinks I'm helping him to defensively, but because I think he's helping me a lot, but I think we just work off each other well. But now we've played together for such a long period of time to really start to work together offensive as they can in ways that are, you know, producing big time for our team. Like this last series. Your lip looks a little banged up is that from the stick at the, that didn't get called this. There was both to several ones. There's the first cross checking in the second one. I just said it was tough to angle for them to see it. So I don't want them to show them the blood anyway just to make sure. I don't know it did happen. I wasn't yelling for no reason, Right? You guys hear me yell at them enough. They don't need to hear anymore unless there's a reason for it.
