Carolina Panthers
Darnold, Anderson lacking chemistry & would Panthers be better without Joe Brady?
Chris Lea joins Kacy Hintz on WRAL Sports Xtra to discuss the pressing issues facing the Panthers after their 34-28 overtime home loss to the Vikings.
Welcome back into sports extras. We continue to break down this panthers overtime, 34 28 loss to the Vikings and to help me do that. Let's bring Chrisley back into the mix. Chris I want to jump right into this and start with Sam Donald and Robby Anderson boy before the season started, we thought we were gonna have this friendly connection back together again and it looked the part early on. But ever since the last few weeks they've been just out of sinks. What have gone wrong with this former Jets duo? Okay, see I had to write notes for this. So so bear with me while I look down. But the first game of the year in the second quarter, it was the 57 yard touchdown Robby Anderson uh, caught the pass from Sam Donald and we thought everything would look great for the rest of the season. It hasn't Robby. Anderson only has 190 yards so far this year. So that means that one touchdown 80 caught From Sam Donald in that first game of the season is about a third of his yard so far this year. Today. He had only three catches on 11 targets targets, only 11 yards last year He was a 1000 yard receiver. He's nowhere near that. It doesn't look like he will get anywhere near that. And Windows 11 targets. You're talking about one interception, a bunch of bad passes and also a bunch of drops. Something is wrong between these two is something that they're going to have to make sure that they get together during this week of practice and maybe to spend some extra time with each other hug, hang out, do something because it's just not working. They're not carrying over that chemistry. We thought they'd have from new york down here to charlotte After the game. I saw that Anderson said no comment. He's gonna hopefully speak to the media tomorrow to be interesting to hear from him. Okay, other side of the ball defense boy, they've been number one through the first few weeks of the season. They've really held the Panthers in games today. They give 571 yards of offense up and they just couldn't make the stops when they needed to. What was the biggest problems you saw today on that defense? You know what? 571 yards is tied for the second most yards that the Panthers defense has ever given up in the history of this franchise for a team that's supposed to have one of the best defenses in the league, that's not good enough. The last time 571 was given up was that Matt Ryan 500 yard game that got somebody fired at the end of the game. But when you look at that, the defense still kept the Panthers in the game even with as bad of the performances they had. So it was up and down this this today, brian Burns said after the game that they couldn't get to the quarterback because Kirk cousins was getting out really fast that they were chipping on them weren't allowing them to get to the quarterback. And then of course, uh they were just kevin moving it downfield at will, especially in the second half but also give the defensive credit. There's times after panthers turnovers that maybe the Vikings should have scored touchdowns and they only kicked field goals. The panthers defense kind of held them to that. So it's one of those up and down games this very young team still fill Snow is going to have some work to do during the week with his team. But you also kind of wonder how much they're missing. Shaq Thompson who wasn't available today, wasn't available last week either Kirk cousins, Loki having a solid season so far. Okay. I want to switch gears just a little bit before we wrap this up, joe brady. I think Speaking of up in the air, I think we're up in the air as to whether we've seen that genius mastermind of joe brady that we saw at L. S. U. But that's the direction I want to go. Obviously a lot of rumblings today regarding head coach Ed Orgeron down there at L. S. U. But among other coaches as well. And joe brady's name continues to pop up as somebody who could fill a coaching role down at the N. C. Double A. Level. But you say not so fast right. Ed Orgeron is going to be out at the end of the year. We found that out today, joe brady is rumored to be one of the names to replace him. Uh if you think about what he did with them L. S. U. In 2019 it looks good. But since he's been with the panthers, panthers have just fallen flat. He doesn't look like the offensive genius that He was advertised to be. If you think about it, the Panthers are 18th in yards per game 16 and passing. That doesn't sound like an offense from an offensive genius. Also, the panthers continue to be last in scoring in the third quarter. Another bad third quarter for them this year that's a carry over from last year where they were also bad in the third quarter to actually worse in the third quarter this year than what they were last year. That's not on teddy Bridgewater, that's not on sam. Donald those guys did leave some to be desired. But there's something going on with the way that joe brady's messages not being carried over to what the panthers actually do on the field. He's probably a huge disappointment I would say as offensive coordinator for the Panthers. Something that Matt rule needs fixed. Matt really even said today that we need to run the ball more and maybe we need to do a hurry up offense even more. Something that Matt rule needs to put his hands in and try to get straight as the Panthers have 11 more games for the season. And he also said they've got to find themselves an identity on offense. Chrisley. Thanks so much. They're going to be heading up to the Giants a banged up Giants next week, and that's when we'll talk to you. Have a good one.
