Hurricanes
DeAngelo: I'm sure they have a lot of confidence going into this round, but so do we
Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo spoke to the media Monday as Carolina gets ready for its second round matchup against his former team the New York Rangers
what's up? Take your hand to me 1/2. Okay, what? So what's your first thought when you look at the opponent? Good team. I mean I could care less with the posters. We you know, we just gotta worry about what we're gonna do here, but a real good team, really power play, high end, you know, obviously I know from experience with a lot of firepower and a great go away. Right? So it's and a resilient team as you guys seen down 31 down to nothing to nothing down to one down three to just find a way to come back and win games. So they got a lot of uh sure they got a lot of confidence going to this round but sort of you've got plenty of booze in boston. I'm sure you'll get some booze in new york. Do you do you like I could care less, it doesn't matter who moves me. Uh some people say it's a compliment. I don't it doesn't they want to boo me, be my guest. What are you doing moving a person skating up the ice? I could care less. Did you know, I got a lot of respect for Martians game. He's a great player has been a great player for a long time. He's got unbelievable player with the puck. I don't mind the other stuff. I mean I know the fans like to like to get into a little bit. I happen to like it because I like to do it back to him as well. He does it to me, he's not a big deal. He's he's a gamer, Great player. Chris Kreider has had a career year this year. How have you seen him? Just, I mean obviously, you know, you have been there this year, but have you seen him? Just grow the player? Yeah, great player, a great shot. He's probably the best guy in front of that in the NHL especially on the power play, I think he scored close to 30 power play goals. I don't know how many other reflections and stuff but a lot he's taken his game to another level. He's older, he's a big time leader there and stuff. So he's kind of guy we gotta watch out for, he's got on top of the shot. So he's got great speed, he could beat anybody. That's about one on one speed wise. So we'll be we'll be watching. What do you like about the way you guys match up the rangers compared to the Similar teams, Boston and New York are a little similar in some ways they both play, they both play a solid 60 ft or 265, 200 ft 200 ft game. I think that when we're on our game that we're staying out of the box, you guys are probably gonna be the same thing 1000 times this week and the next week, whatever. But when we're on our game, we're staying out of the box, I think we're very confident in who we're gonna, no matter who we play that we're gonna come out on the winning side. Teams are really, you guys know teams at this point of the year, everybody's playing everybody. Is there any value familiarity with you and the other rangers, former rangers guys like having familiarity? Yeah, I guess for myself defending them, you know, and some stuff that I can tell the other guys, I feel like everybody knows. But that's a good question because I think that there's some stuff that especially the forwards do and and you know, some dude, I'm not gonna give out anything, but I think that it's just, it's almost habit, right? And I'm sure they're gonna say the same thing about me in the locker room, what what he might do at that point whatever, but you just start to pick up on habits. Some guys, I think we might be able to use, what is that they are saying about? I don't know, you guys probably think mean things, but I think nothing but nice things. That's the way a lot of dangerous players. I mean you can look at it a different way if you want to look at it and say Fox either way he could break the puck out and give them to the dangerous players constantly and you know, and be the fore check and stuff. You can look at it that way. But then you can look and say you get in the ozone, you got an errand with the puck in the snakes advantage and they've got a lot of firepower and we think we know that and they've added some more firepower to the group to post deadlines. So, but I like to look at it and say so do we? And I think we got more firepower. I think we got the list goes on and on our team, right? Just goes all the way down the line up and we got d that could do it and we got great goaltending. So we're gonna be focusing our team I think we know and respect what they could do offensively with the puck. But I think we're gonna be right. Yeah. I mean he's played all different positions and with different guys it's tough when you come over the deadline right? You only have 20 games, 15 games to get used to everybody. But max is first of all he's a really good player, high end skill and speed. But it's also real feisty too. He brings a little bit of an attitude of the team and and just I think a little bit of swagger that we need it. So he shows up in big games. Obviously you guys see that he scores two big goals in game seven and stuff. That's the kind of stuff. He feeds off, he feeds off the crowds and big games and stuff and that's that's why we got what's what's your philosophy on on you guys having three days wrestling into the next round. I mean, Roddy says practice at this point in the season. It's kind of, you just get your legs moving to practice. That's really all it does now. You're not really digging into certain things. I mean you're gonna work on the power play, you're gonna move it, but you get your legs moving, you don't want to be sitting around all day. But this was actually, I'm gonna like to play tomorrow. But even two days restless nights, you played every other day and we we went seven. Obviously we didn't, we would like to go a little bit less than seven, but we go seven. So everybody else did it too right. Besides too serious. So it is what it is. We're not worried about rest. You just gotta be ready to go take care of the body and get ready for a series with playing in front of rants. What does that feel like now you used to have a day in day out basis. I thought he played great. I mean, he was that same against Taylor Hall in the first period, that two on one that boston had theirs. I mean, I don't know what the game would have been like in boston scores there. I still like to think we would have one, but it's it's a game changing save, right? 00 instead of one nothing. And after home crowd it would've gave boston a lot of life and he made a lot of saves like that. Even when we were down in boston, it was 2 to 1, he was making big saves, he's been really good for us. So I mean we we got a lot of trust in him, you know, I think he's gonna continue to play like that if he does we're gonna have a lot of success. Is he easy to play in front of? I mean some goaltenders little different style can change how you have to approach, it is easy to play in front of. Oh I think so, I think all of our goals have been great and he's got such a like a calm demeanor to him in the net and he doesn't get rattled even if he does let in a goal or we go down, there's no like yellow sticks like you know some goalies are some goals, get a little fired up, but he's great, he's played really well for us and like I said all along, we trust anybody we have in there, but so far around has been great big big series for you and Jacob in the first round, do you think you guys are? That's a terrible question. No, I love I love our defense, I love the fashion and shape here, I love Smitty and cozy and I think that me and flav have done a real good job. That's not a question, I'm gonna answer, I love, I love this team, so we're good. Yes, you can ask that. I like that one, no offense to anybody else I've had as a deep partner, I loved I loved playing with marc Staal and I've you know, one of my favorite teammates for a long time, but the slab was just I mean it's one of the top defenseman in my opinion, I've told you guys think is the best defensive defenseman in the game and you guys see that on display in Game seven on sunday he was where he was just swallowing guys one on one and you know, it's tough guys to to defend to write the pasternak's and diversions, he was just able to get them and pin them up against the wall now the Fox going the other way. So when he does that, I'm sitting on the other side of the ISIS and I'm like all right, let's go up the ice, makes it makes the game easier on me. So he's been great, He's a great guy, you guys know how good of a person he is and stuff good teammate and we expect nothing but that every game from what do you think you've picked up from? Uh I think that defensively I think we've worked together really well. I like to think that he hoped, I hope he thinks I'm helping him to defensively, but because I think he's helping me a lot, but I think we just work off each other well and now we've played together for such a long period of time. You're really starting to work together offensive. I think in in ways that are, you know producing big time for our team. Like this last series looks a little banged up from the stick at that didn't get called this. There was both, there's two separate ones, there's the first cross checking in the second one. I just said it was tough angle for him to see it. So I wanted him to show him the blood anyway just to make sure let him know it did happen. I wasn't yelling for no reason. Right? You guys hear me yell at them enough. They don't need to hear anymore unless there's some reason for it. Alright. Good. Thank you guys. Yeah, no worries. No, you're totally fine.
