Hurricanes
DeAngelo: The Hurricanes fans embraced me
Defenseman Tony DeAngelo addresses the media after signing a one-year contract to return to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Get into. But, um, yeah, it's nice to just kind of just be ready to come back and talk hockey. Last time we were talking a year ago, it was more of all kinds of other stuff that, that maybe was taken out of context or whatever I had, you know, but I was glad to answer those questions for you guys this year. It's about coming in and how I could help the, the Hurricanes take the next step to where we all want to be. Derek. Go ahead. Hey, Tony de brand NHL dot com. Just, I just want to ask you about, you know, that relationship with Rod, he sets up player coach, I guess. What is it about him that makes him that player's coach and, and what is it about you and his relationship that brought you back to Carolina? Well, for me, um, you know, I guess everybody has their own opinions on things, but I like his honesty and I like the, the way he motivates the players and kind of understands everybody has different personalities and, and guys just want to play. It's not all trying to get it on his way but these are the respect that guys have for him, including myself. Uh, when he speaks in the locker room, how he's able to grab a group and kind of get you to want to go to bat for him every night. And there's something new every night to get, you know, when you're, I remember the year I was there, we were sitting at 50 wins with, in, at game 75 or whatever it was and he still has a, a way to get you fired up for game 77 even though you're looking for, you know, you're looking forward to two weeks later with the playoffs. So it's something that the, uh, that he brings to the table. I'm sure all guys kind of agree with that. But, uh, he lets you play, he lets you be who you are. And I think that's important for myself, especially and he plays, uh, he plays a style, you know, and implements a style that, that also fits the way I like. So I think that's why we got along so well. And he kind of played, he played a hard nosed style, similar style as me. He wasn't a huge guy, bigger, stronger than I am probably. But, uh, you know, he played a, he played that kind of way too, the way we like to play hockey. So it all goes together and he seems to bring the best out of you offensively. Do you expect that as well to be able to kind of have that freedom to jump in a rush, make plays and, and do things like that. Yeah, I actually thought the best defensively I played was in, was in Carolina. I thought that, uh, the system was a little, a little better for me to be able to attack guys and use my speed more maybe than playing in a, uh, you know, below the dot system, whatever you want to call it, there's different ways that, that things are played. But uh offensively, my game's been still coming along even last year, the points took a dip back, but I made, I made a lot of plays wasn't as uh opportunistically, I guess as the year before, I didn't score as much power play wasn't as good, all that kind of stuff. But uh offensively, I got no worries, but I want to continue to improve defensively. That's been a thing for years now, but there's still more and more levels to get to. Thank you, Brian. I'm just curious, there was no secret that, you know, the canes kind of had a trade on the table to reacquire you this off season. It seemed that things kind of fizzled out when the league kind of got involved with the timing of everything. I'm just curious from a player's perspective. Were you aware of like that kind of that you were involved in that trade talk? And you were kind of, were you waiting at all for it to just go through or kind of, how was that from a player perspective? I'm just curious. Oh, I had a pretty good feeling that we were gonna, uh, that they were gonna move on from me in Philly there. And a good relationship with Danny and Keith Jones here are really, really good people and they're gonna turn this Flyers organization around at some point here. But, um, I had no idea. Yeah, I first seen the trade to Caroline from Elliott Friedman. So I had, nobody was calling me or anything. I don't know, uh, what happened there. It's none of none of my business really. That's as far as the teams go in the league goes. But, uh, just waiting game for me, obviously. And then once it was, uh, you know, went to buy out way to become a free agent and start talking to teams again. But like I said, we kind of had a pretty good idea of where we'd want to go. There was a few other things that were going on but, uh, ultimately decided to come back to Raleigh. What, Sony? Welcome back. And you've got a relationship with Brendan Lemieux who's obviously signed here. So I wanted to get your thoughts and maybe discussions on what the two of you have had about playing together again. And, um, that opportunity. Yeah, we're just following each other around when, uh, you know, he comes to New York, he comes to Philly and I'll follow him back to Raleigh. So, uh, I think that the fans are really, like, really, like what I call him. Pepe, what, uh, Pepe brings to the table. He's a energy guy. He's a, you know, hard nosed player. He doesn't take any, any crap from anybody sticks up for his teammates. He's, you know, powerful skater finishes checks. He's, um, and he's a good guy, you know, cares about his teammates, cares about, cares about the game and stuff. So be looking forward, I think it's kind of needed AAA necessity for the team the way he plays. So I'm looking forward to watching him again in camp and seeing, uh, seeing how it goes. Yep. Yeah, Tony, you know, that, uh, a lot of people, a lot of fans, whatever, they've all had different opinions of you one way or the other, it seems like, uh, how, how are you able to kind of put it aside all the noise and just play hockey and just try to do what you've got to do? Yeah, I mean, I, I could care less what the people think. I, I had a great relationship with the Hurricanes fans which wind up being awesome. But you gotta remember the first game I played in Carolina. I also got, there were some pretty loud boos when I got announced for, uh, you know, on the opening night. So it just finds a way, you know, once they get to know you, I said that last year and, you know, it kind of became true once they get to know you and watch you as a player and see you, you know, see you on the ice. I obviously they see us more on the ice than off the ice, but they kind of make their own assumptions on you. Everybody seems to have opinions one way or the other that's been, uh, especially with the way my career has gone. It's kind of, uh, people go one way or the other. But, uh, I don't, I don't, everybody's allowed to have an opinion and I don't mind, they could say what they want. But, uh, I was happy that in Carolina and one of the big reasons for wanting to come back was the way the fans embraced me there and the, and the team and the organization. So it was nice and it would be nice to be back. All right. Thank you very much, Tony. Thank you much.
