Drake Maye: My dream is playing in the NFL
Drake Maye and Mack Brown's fortunes are linked. The QB talked about what they discussed in the offseason to prepare for 2023.
Out here you go so I can I can lift up. Oh, alrighty uh set up some things in the office he went to, he can help me get better. Yeah, I think the main thing, you know, having a year under my belt, leadership wise, coach Brown has seen a lot of great leaders, Colt mccoy Vince Young, first off the leadership wise, being the leader of the offense quarter leader of the team. So just finding ways that I can prove as a leader and help this become a play led team get as far as I can some football things moving in the pocket. Coach Browns offense coordinator back in the day, see a lot of quarterbacks. So just kind of ask him little things and anything that he saw just from his mind, from a quarter perspective and just actually sitting down and in his office and asking him and see his perspective at school. And also the coordinator was the main thing that's kind of going through his mind, but just kind of take his mind off and ask him about my play was a good perspective. He just said, you know, get down, you don't like me jumping and trying to, you know, jump over some people, he just say get down, stay healthy. So I was just that. And coach Browns also, you can ask for a better head football coach play for and I just, you know, you and what do you think about? Yeah, I think, you know, South Carolina, they go, they turn it on at the end of the year, they beat Tennessee. That bowl game was crazy. I think last year, two years ago here we, the exact same hotel we stayed at for the bowl game. We didn't put our best foot forward. You know, Sam's last game, hey, he went out that way and then just get another chance at him. You know, my home city in Charlotte, you know, Spencer had some, some great games last year. He's a great football player and I think he's had a, you know, a road, he's had to prove himself and he throws around. He's got, you know, as much time in the world as you, as you can think as a quarterback. So I think he'll be geared up. Um, I know he's gonna have a great season, so just getting ready and having a, you know, a good quarterback, a quarterback do I think it's fun, you know, call for you got two great quarterbacks. I like to see myself. Yeah, I think, you know, coming back is definitely the question just third year and I want to obviously graduate and however the year plays it out. You know, I hope we win all the games we can. But, you know, coming back and staying for this great university playing another year, you can't say no to that. It's a university. But also at the same time, you know, my dream is playing in the NFL. So you let this year play out itself, but a special place to me and I can imagine myself playing five years here. So I don't think very much I think is great. It's great for college players getting paid and getting the money and not really the money, just the recognition they deserve college. These players make so much money for the university and so much money in, in the media world for, for these companies. So, and I know it's, it's been great for, you know, football teams and football players get rewarded, but at the same time, um you know, I, I love the game, I don't love it for, you know, those things. So I don't think it'd be that big a deal last year. You were coming to the conference in the country by storm with the numbers that you put out there and now you're going into a year where the target is gonna be on your bag Heisman candidate. Um And Sam, how kind of had that similar situation going into this fight here? So what kind of, what kind of conversations are you two having, as far as him, kind of like getting you prepared for all the, that you have to kind of deal. No doubt. I think, you know, Sam is one of my best friends. You know, we were hanging out all summer. He's got his own deal. He was in his first day at camp the other day with, you know, the commander, so he's got his own thing, but just staying in touch with him, he's, he's great. I think the best thing for Sam for me was, you know, being in there and watching how he handled each day, you know, day in, day out, you know, you know, how much film you watched, how much is taking care of his arm, how much to take care of his body, how hard to lift, just see his work ethic. That was the main thing for me. And, you know, now I think, you know, asking a few pointers just about, you know, he's been through and handling the media and handling all the hype. So just asking, you know, little things I'm out to try to bombard him with what he did in his daily life. But at the same time, like I said, he's a great quarterback, a great friend and I just kind of learn as much as I can, you know, from how he handled it and to see things he would have done over things, he would have done better. So the great thing. Speaking, you were one of the, you were the only quarterback in the nation last year took over for over 4000 yards, have a 5 to 1 ratio and rush for only 600 yards. I know that you fought complacency, but is there a moment where you kind of sit back and say like, wow, that was a great accomplishment. That was a great season. I found myself on the back and now I get back to no, I mean, I think that's a great question. I think, um, not only like I tried to call myself like Coach Brown said, I try to, you know, look at things I get better on. I think that's why you have, you know, family, family members, I think my dad and my mom have done a great job of kind of, like I said, patting me on the back and, you know, seeing the perspective, you know, one year ago today I was, you know, in battle, um competing every day against, you know, a great other quarterback and now I'm sitting here, uh, you know, the last year has kind of been, it's been crazy, you know, it comes fast, uh, just enjoy it. Um, but, uh, not the end of the day, uh try to put myself on the back, just try to stay grounded and, uh, you know, keep, like I said earlier, keep the main thing, the main thing that winning games and do whatever I can to help the team win the game. Yeah, I knew, I knew it was a trap game going up there. You know, the Upstate they got, they've got some great teams. Um, that stadium was awesome playing in there. Um, you know, I've been up in boon a few times and, uh, you know, they love football up there and, uh, that, that atmosphere, we were walking in about 9 30 10 o'clock for a noon game and the whole student section was there, the whole, the whole students was filled on their sideline. So, uh, you know, I'm excited for them to come here. I think, you know, that was it three years ago, maybe four years ago, Coach Brown's first year, they got us in Keenan. So you can't, can't, can't have things like that happen. So just, you know, take them seriously, you know, they're, they're a great team. They surprised me A and M at their place. So they've been some places and Coach Clark has done some good things there. So, you know, praise them and we were ready for the height and pressure that's coming with the, uh, you know, I think, let take a grant of salt, I think, um, the big thing is not letting it, you know, like I said, keep you too high or get you too low. You know, the worst thing you do is you go on social media and read the things that they say about you just keep, you know, I'm here to play football for North Carolina and all the other stuff come with itself and, you know, the season goes on, just worry about week by week. You know, nowadays college football, you know, every team is going to be good at getting transporter guys. You know, the guys aren't playing the bigger schools going to the lower schools and the best guys from lower schools going to the major schools. So just bring it every week and just enjoying it. I'm a college kid. I'm 20 years old, just enjoying college and I'm living with my brother in my apartment who goes to school there. So just enjoying it, Drake, we know the level of competitors in your family. Were there any battles in the off season over the summer? Whether that was football? Yeah. You talking about this past or win? Yeah. Oh yeah, we just got past this past weekend playing golf. You know, I actually beat all three of my brothers for one of the few first times of my life in golf. I'm headed down to the beach with them after we got this week off. So one of the last things for camp, we playing pickle ball, me and Luke, you know, love playing pickleball. One, be one and that anything you can find ping pong. We go in some late night, the facility, I go over to football facility and I think Luke beat me like seven straight games of ping pong and I keep on asking for another game. So Luke Luke kind of gets the tail end of, you know, I get a butt who him from Luke. But we really like to compete. Anything. We do, we compete and just try to stay healthy. That's my dad says now I get too physical, one on one basketball, getting a little too physical nowadays. So somebody's going to twist their ankle or something. So we try to stay away from that kind of. Yeah, I think Luke, the big great thing about Luke, he, he went through it, you know, he been, you know, in a setting, like not often you get a brother to be in the same setting, you know, handling the hype. I was watching some old interviews of him a few days ago, I think particularly after the Duke game and one and just seeing how he handled the media and it's great having a brother in a dad has been through it to give you pointers and just help you go through some things that, you know, it's not easy for a 20 year old or a 19 year old to go through them. So just have somebody there, two people there and my mom is great too. Just have you ask questions and see advice is you were gonna go anywhere. But how crazy was it after the season with the communication from other schools? They told you the things they offered you. No. No. Yeah. No, no. I think, um, you know, the best thing about, um, kind of the way we handle that. None of them reach out to me. Um, the big thing is, uh, they, they, they contact, someone, contacted my high school coach but, you know, I love playing North Carolina. That's, that's the main thing I'd probably say from, from all that happened. You know, there's a lot of stories, a lot of, you know, go around and some schools contacting me. I never talked to anybody. I think I wouldn't do that. Um, without, you know, coach Brown knowing without, um, the team. So I think, you know, I love playing quarterback in my dream school. Um, you know, I wouldn't pass that up and it really, for me it wasn't really any question. Uh, leave Chapel Hill. You talk to how he was in the same situation. He had the same. Oh, yeah, he's been great. Um, you know, just the way, you know, constant communication. He's been, he's been awesome. We play golf a lot too. We hang out, we go on vacation together. So just having a guy there who has been through it in the exact same situation and going through it just being somebody to ask what you think of this and what do you think of these people who were talking to the same people? So, just trying to find ways to use his knowledge and his experiences to his advantage. Do you feel like you guys could do something special this season? The way things have been building out a nine year? Yeah, I think, um, rephrase that. Sorry again, rephrase that. Did you feel like you guys have a chance to really do something special this year? Do you sense that in the room? Like AC C championship? Here we take the next step, no doubt. I think that that's the main thing on our mind, ac championship. I think any time you have Coach Brown, you know, guys like said, John leaders on this team who, who want to lead, who are pushing guys in summer workouts. We want to be great. I think the good thing is that for us. So just trying to, you know, as a quarterback and the leader of the team just trying to do my part. And I think, you know, looking for a special season, be understatement. I think that's the goal, that's what's on our mind. And I think we got the talent to be like I said, I think player led team is the main thing and not losing the games ourselves. You know, I think for me just keep protecting the football, not turning it over those things and penalties and stuff like that, just trying to minimize those some of the film we've been watching back and coach Lindy has been harping on not beating ourselves. You've watched the film 345. What happened over there? Um No, I think, um, you know, starting with that Georgia Tech game. Uh I think we had some guys out. Obviously I didn't play my best game. Um, you know, the way they play, they, they, they pressed us up outside. Um, they double team Josh. Um, they did, they, they scheme us up. Well, obviously they got after us a little bit up front. Um, but we still have a chance to win that game. I think we were up, um, shoot 20 21 7 going half 17. We up 17. Yeah, that hurt. It hurt to say that. And I think we play that game. I play that team over from there at the same point. I think it would be a different story. Um, NC State, I think what they do defensively is awesome. You know, they drop eight and they'll bring coverage to zero and the same look. So just, you know, like I said, finding ways that teams will play me, I think as a quarterback going into, I think a lot of teams play me different. Clemson played me different. They didn't really do what they did against us, against anybody else. These teams too. How much did you learn from that? How much can you? Oh, yeah. You know, watching the games over and over seeing what they do, um, seeing how the teams are going to handle me. I think that's the main thing I think because I'm a little different than a lot of quarterbacks or offenses. I think the way we throw it around the yard and, um, the way we can, you know, I can, I can roll my feet and, uh, just extend plays. Um, teams are gonna try to, you know, make me stay patient and I got to, you know, learn to kind of take that and, uh, just take what the defense gives me. So the experience at the man and is like, what was that like? I'm sure you enjoyed it. Like, what was that whole thing like? Yeah, I wanna sell was my too. So, uh you got, became good friends with, yeah, 42, Devin Leary is in there. So a bunch of old AC C guys, um was all of us in there. It was awesome, you know, Manny campus, you know, it's one of the best things I've done, you know, as a quarterback going down there and not only teaching young kids but getting to, you know, hang around all the guys and, uh I used to, you know, like I said, we are all going through the same thing, relate to another and, and get this, you know, your knowledge from two of the best ever, you know, pay and eli and just hang around them and Cooper. It was, it was an awesome experience and get to get to know those guys me or just played golf. Last week. So just communication, you obviously still a rival league and, you know, when, when the game hits, you know, it, no friends on the field, but, you know, has become a good friend and Jordan's awesome down there. So I get to know the ac guys, you know, they are all great dudes and that's the cool thing about. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You know, you, we, we played our game like, like 10 times. He said, you know, I think his picker missed a big field goal and we went down there with two minutes left. He said I knew it was too much time. So it was funny stuff. It up tough defense. That's a good question. I think the AC C, I think you can't sell Clemson Short. They got some of the best guys running after you. Clemson is good NC State has some good defenses over the years. You know, anybody that gets after me, I try to think they got a pretty good defense so I tried to run away from them but it is tough sometimes. Um, not
