Duke
Filipowski: 'We've been getting disrespected for some time now'
Duke forward Kyle Filipowski addresses the media before the Blue Devils' home game versus Pitt.
Yeah, Kyle, Hey, the last 20 seconds of the game on, on Saturday, uh you know, you secured the loose ball at 5050 ball and made the free throws, what was your mindset during that time? How confident were you when he went to the line, those kind of things, how, how is that, how did that go for you? Um, you know, I'm probably just say uh something that the coaches I've been asking of, of the whole team lately just to compete every possession, you know, never, never take a play off things like that, and especially with the way the last minute went, which is how hectic it was. Um you know, that's just kind of what we needed, we just need to stick together and fight through to the end of the clock and um, you know, I was just in the right position at the right time, you know, fighting for the loose ball and uh, you know, I just um, you know, I just had to block the crowd out the noise out, just focus on again the win for my team because I know that's the most important thing and you know, all those uh talks about, you know, freshmen not being able to get free throws and collect times or anything, you know, that that didn't really bother me at all because you know, we all have our own opportunities to create our own stories and things like that. So now I just kind of just focused on on what my team needed and what we came to boston college to do Brendan? Hey, Kyle, yeah, coach has mentioned this a few times now, but obviously you have moved up the scouting report for other teams pretty quickly, given your play to start the season, Have you noticed that? And if so like what does that look like from your perspective, how much harder has it been for you with teams maybe devoting a little more attention? Yeah, I've definitely um noticed just the next level of physicality that's been brought to these last four or five games to me. Um and I mean that's kind of showed by my player as well. You know, I wasn't really prepared for that uh in a way, so, you know, I just got to stay focused, you know, be prepared for that. Um I mean I'm definitely capable of handling that type of pressure and that type of physicality and I just got to, you know, bring it to them first before they bring it to me, let them know that I'm here to keep playing the way I should be. And you know, if one thing's not going for me, they take it away, I can adapt and do something else to help my team get the win. Donald go ahead thanks and hi Kyle piggybacking off of Brendan's question, you know, you're in the heart of A CC season. Uh, Duke of course three and two in the conference so far and in your first year, like what have been some of the major differences you have seen between these A. C. C games and some of the big nonconference games that you've competed in so far? Yeah I think I think what I just noticed most is how anyone can win on any given night uh and you know we can scout the other team and be prepared in all of those ways with with what they have and what they're bringing to the table. But I mean if we don't bring the fight and we don't compete every night then you know that none of that matters. And I think just um just seeing who has more heart at the end of the day that will really really bring out the true winner of the game and you know it'll make it better going down the line I think in the beginning of the season um you know everyone's still learning to kind of get to know each other a little bit like not not only us but other other programs as well. Um So there of course there's some games there where you know you're able to slip away with um maybe like a few other um factors that you're not able to now, Adams hey Kyle, I have two questions actually for you, what did it mean for you to win in massachusetts after going to Will Graham and Munson uh you saw coach Mannix up there and then you're in a little shooting slump right now it's been since the Iowa game since you had a three pointer, What do you think that is due to? And, and how do you come out of a shooting slump like that? Um, I mean, you know, just going back up to kind of my old stopping grounds was really great, you know, I got a lot of, a lot of people that came to the game show their support. So it was, you know, it was great to kind of get the winning free throws and get the win in front of, in front of my, my friends and family from back home a little bit. Um and uh, and I mean, yeah, just with just with the shooting slump. Um, you know, I think I, what I gotta do is, you know, like everyone says, just keep shooting, you know, getting before and after practice, just get a lot of repetition up, uh, just a lot of shots, you know, game type shots uh, and also try to keep my confidence there because obviously, you know, being in a slump, can, can be a big confidence trainer and, and, and you know, make me hesitate for the next time I shoot a three. But I mean my coaches and my teammates, they all have full confidence in me and they're there to help me out as well, they keep telling me to shoot the ball too. And, and like I always have, so I think, um, you know, I think just just sticking with it you know like don't don't doubt myself you know keep the confidence in myself and and that that thing will fall eventually and I'll be right out of it in no time jim. Go ahead. Yeah. Hey Kyle good morning. Uh I want to ask you about the B. C. Game Duke struggle against their zone, had a pretty long uh field goal drought and obviously other teams are gonna see that on film and incorporate in that into their defense. What does Duke have to do to attack the zone better? Um You know I think I think you know just working on that more in practice will get us better for when the game time comes. No question. And I mean just just like how you beat any zone you know just get open in the middle and the paint work off that you know have the have the guys move around the perimeter, the big move down low and I think you know it's just as simple as that in order to be the zone. So I think we just you know we were making a little more difficult for ourselves in the B. C. Game than it had to be. Um I mean I think that's just a small correction we can we can have moving forward. Thanks. Hey Kyle, you guys are a pretty young team even with jeremy on the floor so when he's not on the floor um you lose a ton of experience. What's it been like playing without him? And do you see any differences? Um You know whether it be when you guys are on the road or um you know just just managing the game in general. Yeah I mean even though Jeremy hasn't played the last couple of games he's still uh you know been been stepping up and sticking to his role on the team as well as being a leader and still being vocal while he's on the bench and from the sidelines. Which is what we exactly need from him right now and I just hope he gets better uh quick and all that. Um But I mean yeah we we may lack a lot of experience with with him off the floor. But I mean it's he still mix it up in in other ways. You know we still have other older guys um that have plenty of experience you know and I mean even the freshman you know I mean we are like more than halfway through the season around or something like that and I mean we're picking up new things every game every day and I mean you know just games like B. C. And then a close game at the end of the wire like that you know that's that's a big time experience for us to go through. Um You know that that could help us going down the road for sure. Hey Kyle you mentioned earlier that you know the end of the B. C. Game was hectic. There's a lot going on. Was the message in the huddle more geared towards Xs and Os or was it more coaches challenging you guys? I think I think it was a little bit more with the coaches challenging us. Um I mean they even emphasized that they're fighting for us and with us throughout the whole game and and I mean we just got to reciprocate that. And I mean especially with that uh bad loss to the N. C. State prior to the B. C. Game. Um You know that's just what they wanted to see out of us. They just want to see that fight and our competitive nature? Um You know because like I said that the extras and those don't really matter if we don't have that. So that was definitely the key to winning the game at the end of the game and you know just listening to our coaches too because they had a lot of great points at the end of the game that that helped us you know get a defensive stop or or anything like that honor? How did you feel like the defense traveled a little more than the first two road games with the game of B. C. I'm sorry can you repeat that. Did you feel like your defense traveled a little better? Like did you guys play better defense in the third road game than the first two? Yeah. Yeah I would say so. Um You know I think like like I would say that that comes with the competitive nature to um you know we didn't really bring in the wake forest game in the in the N. C. State game. You know we were kind of just lollygagging going with the motions, things like that. We weren't really there to fight and be prepared for for a battle. Um And I think we were with the B. C. Game a little more. Um And you know just having some pride and dignity for ourselves to you know I mean they always say like don't don't pay attention to what people say on the outside and things like that. But obviously we've been getting disrespected for some time now just with you know Duke not being the same and things like that. So we got to kind of take that and use this fuel and like have a chip on our shoulder moving forward because I mean if we just keep playing the way we did those first two away games and I mean they're all right. So so we definitely have something to prove every day. And I mean I know for sure we're wanting to prove that David, I'll go to you and then I'll circle back to you Brendan. Yeah I was mentioned to mark that you know he's already played 17 games in college and was a little taken back by that. Are you surprised by the speed of how things are going? I mean, do you feel like you're in the middle of your first season? You know what, what is just the speed of this feel like for you? Yeah, I mean it's definitely, you know, it is definitely a little surprising when you say 17 games and because you know, I feel like, I mean we, we've learned so much already, but I feel like we still have a long way to go and in so little time, but I mean, not saying that we're not capable of doing that because we definitely are. Um but I mean just, you know, it's, it's been a fun first half of the season already. I already know we have so much more to accomplish in the second half. Um but I mean just just beginning a CC play now and and that kind of finishing up our, the rest of our, our schedule and our season, uh it is definitely a little a little different than uh past experiences for sure. But I mean that's that's why we're here to learn and grow and you know, help us come time. March, last question Brendan, I actually wanted to ask you about Tariq, obviously the boston college game was, you know, sort of another step for him offensively, how close would you say he is to looking like the guy who he was at the start of the summer when you all first got there and like is there something from him that we haven't seen yet that you're sort of waiting on him to to sort of reveal? Yeah, I mean, I mean, just the past few games after the games I've even said to him, you know, like keep doing what you're doing, uh you know, you're getting better every day and he's looking more like himself every day and uh you know, I'm sure the potential on that kid is, you know, sky lists and and he's got so much more to to achieve and he's got so much more to bring out to himself. But I mean he's doing, he's doing great for what we need him to be doing now. And I mean just just him getting better every day like I said, and it's really good for the team. I mean, we couldn't really ask for anything anything more from him because he's you know, he's still competing. He's he's given us, like you said, offensive firepower. So you know, it's just it's looking good with with him forward and we got all the confidence in him to keep doing what he's doing awesome, thank you guys coach, I'll be on in a couple
