Giglio: the ACC is playing a dangerous game right now
Joe Giglio discusses the rumored ACC-Pac 12 alliance.
with this A. C. C. Pac 12 partnership when I first saw it last night. Um I thought it was interesting, I thought it was a good idea but maybe little too late. Um ford what are your thoughts when you saw it? And how do you think this will kind of land on everyone outside of pac 12 and A. C. C. Country? Yeah. Yeah. If we're being honest here, chris the A. C. C. Is playing a dangerous game right now. And the problem with the PAC 12 is they have a relationship with Fox and ESPN is who pays the bills for the A. C. C. And what we should really be thinking about in terms of the A. C. C. And its survival are how can they get ESPN on their side or to remain on their side And this dalliance with the PAC 12 and potentially Fox, that's not the right answer, I can tell you that. So there's nothing left of the carcass of the pac 12 that's going to move the needle to the point where financially I think it will help the A. C. C. And all this move could potentially do is to irritate the, you know the the sensei who's in charge of keeping the A. C. C. Afloat and that is ESPN keeping that in mind. Um Do you think that maybe jim phillips was smart enough to like talk to the brass at ESPN while he's making these, you know partnerships with different uh conferences, is to say like hey if we were to do this, would there be interest or do you think he's just kind of just just operating right now. I think there's probably some, let's throw some spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks going on With Jim Phillips. He was caught off guard behind the Big 10 and their move that was clear. And now he's trying to make an adjustment that in my opinion it is the wrong play. There is no value really in the PAC 12 and what's left of it? Certainly not on the football side. You could sell me maybe on some basketball, Arizona and Carolina, something along those lines. Um, but there's, there's nothing really there with the pact. Well that's going to move the needle to the point that it's going to help the A. C. C. So outside of the grant of rights right now. What should the A. C. C do in your opinion? If that's not the play? What is the play? Yeah. First of all, make sure that grantor rights is locked solid and will hold up in court because I think people are very confused as to what that means to just to review it quickly. It means you can't collect your money from even outside the league if you leave the league. So if Clemson per se wants to leave, they can't take any of the money from the SEc network that all goes back to the sec. That's the legal document that's keeping the CC together right now, I'm probably just buying it time if you will. I think the play is to go back to Notre dame and Jack Swarbrick, maybe lean on boo Corrigan, who's the head of the college football playoff committee this next year and say, hey, what do we need to do to get those negotiations back open? And what do we need to do to expand the playoff field? What do we need to do for the A. C. C. To be included in that? And to realize, you know, sometimes it's being third. There's nothing wrong with being third when the alternative is not being at all. If they do all of that on top of, let's say the PAC 12 gets further rated by the big 12. Do you think that maybe part of that play along with what you described would be to try to maybe sweep up what's left of the pac 12, maybe in Oregon Oregon state, Washington Washington state and maybe try to dominate the coast. Yeah, there's no value there. In terms of, you add those teams, you have to be able to add the amount that increases each school's share And in the schools that are left in the PAC 12, there is none other than Oregon who has some value in part that's inflated by Nike. But mostly Oregon is another version of Virginia Tech there there. Virginia Tech with fancier uniforms. They don't have that great of a tradition. They don't have that huge of a stadium. They don't have that great of a national following shore? They're huge in their state. They're important in their state. I'm not downplaying that, but they're not a Ohio State. They're not a michigan, they're not even a Wisconsin or michigan state. There are nice, you know, middle of the road kind of power five school, which the A. C. C. Has a surplus of Virginia Tech with nice uniforms. That is a burn if I've ever heard one. All right, let me ask you about this baker. Mayfield thinks this has just happened. Um, I think, um, a lot of as a panthers fan, a lot of what panthers fans are probably worried about was mostly what are the panthers giving up for? It looks like they're only giving up conditional fifth round pick in 2024 and they have to pay what I think $5 million off the top of my head and the browns are taking 10.5 baker has decided to shave off 3.5 of that. So really the panthers aren't really giving up too much and here they are with two quarterbacks who have a proven year and matt corral kind of waiting in the wings to see if what he could do. Um, Initial thoughts on what this trade could mean for the panthers and the quarterback position and after that, Do you think that this trade moves the needle for the panthers meaning does this equal more than five wins? You know, this year versus what they've had the last two seasons. Under that rule, Best case scenario, if the Panthers get the pandemic version of Baker Mayfield, the 2020 version where he led the browns to the playoffs and was healthy. Best case scenario, I think, you know, the panthers could flirt for that wild card spot. Good. That's the best case dream scenario. The real problem with baker Mayfield isn't his contract, It isn't his health, it's his personality flaws and his teammates spoke out against him or didn't speak out for him, which sometimes tells you more in the NFL chris it's not just Odell Beckham, Jr and his dad, it's where were all of the supporters in Cleveland of the face of the franchise? There wasn't exactly a line around the block there at progressive field. So that's the big issue. You could be adding a cancer to your team and you don't want that. You prefer Sam Donald who by all accounts seems like someone who keeps to himself and is truly trying to be the best version of himself. It just so happens, he's not that talented. I do think baker is a more talented version. I do think he has has a better track record in the NFL. But those personality concerns are very real and when you drop somebody into a locker room? You use the word prove it, contract year for baker Mayfield, you better hope and his primary motivation is getting to that next contract.
