A lot of good coming out of the Hurricanes 32 overtime win over the Penguins yesterday. Not the least of which is that. Carolina is now only one point behind the Rangers who lead the metropolitan division. Think about what three weeks ago, Carolina was eight points back and the Rangers had a couple of games in hand, but the Hurricanes have now closed that gap all the way to one New York still has a game in hand, but Carolina is also playing incredibly good hockey at this point. Keys are now 10, 1 and four in their last 15 games and we'll get to some big picture numbers from that. But the other best thing we saw last night in the win over the Penguins was Auntie Ranta being spectacular and think about the position Carolina is in right now. We're not that far away from Ranta being sent to the minor leagues. Remember after the game against Nashville, in which the Predators beat Carolina in overtime, 65, Ranta was put on waivers, he cleared waivers and then everybody had a decision to make. Ranta could have just said, I don't want to go to the minor leagues. I've been in this league long enough. I don't need to go and Carolina could have kept him on the roster, which they probably would have or they could have simply released him and somebody else could have picked him up while Carolina was paying the freight. But ROTA went to the Chicago Wolves played a couple of games there. He was ok. He wasn't great. I don't know if he repaired his confidence but Carolina brought him back because they needed an NHL goalie. And Janie Peretz, the kid from Quinnipiac is not ready to play in the NHL, not in real games anyway. And Roto won his first start back. That was against the Montreal Canadiens right after Christmas. Carolina won their first game back in Nashville and then Ranta played the game against Montreal at PNC Arena where he's basically a fortress anyway and he was fine. He wasn't amazing but he was good and Carolina probably played their best game in a long time against the Canadiens, but in the three games since one of which was a cameo for the injured Pyotr Kuko now file that away. Ranta is 30 and one with a 930 save percentage in these four appearances. And now as I referenced because he came in and made three saves in the win earlier in the week. Uh because Pyotr Kyko got injured. That's right. Pyotr Kko suffered a concussion in the Thursday win because of that Ranta had to come in and now he must play. So Carolina does not have another option right now. Beyond Ranta in that again, they don't want to play Janie Perette. So he is going to be an emergency goalie. Only if Kuko can't come back in a short period of time. Carolina is either gonna have to roll the dice with Peretz or they're gonna either have to trade for another goalie, which they probably should do anyway, or they're just gonna beat the brakes off Arana and we all know how problematic that can be, but file this away. Also, remember the last two playoff seasons, ante Arana basically started them and got them going. Ranta can play and he can deliver in high leverage situations and that's what he did to the Penguins. 38 saves. So many of them. Enormous. He robbed Sidney Crosby on one of them. Absolutely robbed a sure fire Hall of Famer. All right, some other big picture numbers in this 15 game run again. Carolina 10 1 and four in the run. Sebastian AO 67 goals, 26 points. It's also a plus eight in that in that span. Andrei Svet uh in the 11 games he's played since returning from his latest injury, nine goals, 17 assists. Seth Jarvis in the 15 game run, six goals, 13 assists. And again, as I mentioned Keynes winning in overtime last night snaps, a five game overtime losing streak. Carolina won their first four games after regulation, they lost their next five big two points last night and one more thing, two more things maybe. Uh, the first of which Brett Pesce scored the first goal last night and the last goal in overtime and it was his first goals since the third game of the season. I mean, that is really how far back you have to go to find the last Brett Pesci goal and we'll close on this Monday afternoon game PNC Arena Hurricanes against the Los Angeles Kings and Justin Williams who has two Stanley Cups with the Kings and one with Carolina. Justin Williams goes into the Hurricanes Hall of Fame. I tip my cap to you captain because your return to the Hurricanes was maybe people didn't realize it at the time was the beginning of this. So my imaginary cap tipped to Justin Williams.
