Carolina Panthers
Hintz and Lea: Panthers still searching for answers
The Carolina Panthers are still searching for answers from the coaching staff and from the quarterback position.
welcome back into Sports extra as we continue to break down the panthers 1916 lost to the Football Giants. And to help me do that is W. R. E. L's Chrisley chris thanks so much for hopping on tonight. You know I was texting you and I said I don't think three minutes is enough to talk about this game. But in the same sentence I almost want to be like we actually don't have to talk about a lot because it feels like we've been talking about the same stuff over the last two years. One of these topics is quarterbacks this year, it's a new one in baker Mayfield, he was 14 of 29 passing today. A number of batted passes just like last week. Now is this just Mayfield still getting accustomed to this offense as matt rule alluded to today or is this just who baker Mayfield is? I think we're seeing a little bit of who baker Mayfield is first off when kevin Stefanski came to the browns his first year there, we saw baker Mayfield had his best year ever in the NFL, he's not a scrub. So let's not make it seem like he's a scrub. He has some ability but baker Mayfield is not gonna win you games on his own. His own things are gonna have to go right for him. Uh And when you give the job Giants the ball twice and you're only down six to nothing but you're down baker Mayfield then is going to have to lead you back. He has some of that ability. But you also see that he can get rattled, he can he's the balls are still getting tipped at the line of scrimmage. He's missing wide open guys. I mean I can think of like four off the top of my head right now where he just simply missed guys uh shy smith, christian mccaffrey, DJ more throwing them pretty bad passes and passes that maybe should have been uh a little bit more on target and maybe we're talking about a different result, but still it's all the same and and it's the same outcome. So um it's just interesting though, it goes back to head coach matt rule, which we'll talk about him a little bit later. But now you've had four starting quarterbacks for you since you've been there over the last, you know, two seasons and now two games of this season. What are you, what kind of offense are you gonna put in place to make sure that these guys are gonna be set up as best as possible because you're not getting franchise quarterbacks at this point, you're getting guys that's gonna need help and you're putting it in positions to make them put the game on their backs and they're just not capable of doing that. Well, chris that leads me to my very next question, you mentioned, you know, not a scrub, the panthers have weapons on the offensive side of the ball, You've got guys like D. J. Moore Robby Anderson and oh just a guy named christian Mccaffrey who is just two years removed from having 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving. So my next question for you is, do you think the staff is using these guys to the best of their ability? Absolutely not. Today we got a chance to see them use christian mccaffrey. So that's fine. But you also went and got Deontay foreman. Unless remember when Derrick Henry who was probably the best running back in NFL last year when he went down with an injury with the Tennessee titans? Deontay foreman almost made the titans look like they didn't miss a beat. He was doing amazingly amazingly. And today two carries. That's it. You're not really using him for anything else. Not using him out the back field as a decoy or anything like that. Then also where's Rashard Higgins? I thought Richard Higgins was one of making Mayfield's favorite targets in, in uh, in Cleveland. I haven't seen him the last two weeks he's been active. However, then you also make this weird trade for low viscous channel right before the season starts. Okay, cool. But he hasn't been activated as a player the last two weeks and supposedly there's different things you can use with him but we haven't seen him what like he doesn't, you know the whole playbook, put him in there for a few packages and then outside of that, you're not really using DJ more to his full capabilities. D. J. Morris all of his, all of his uh, yards came on one drive, which is the panthers first drive in the second half in the third quarter. So like why aren't you even using your, your best wide receiver um, to the, to his highest capabilities? Then? Also, I don't think I've even seen Tommy tremble catch a pass this entire season so far. So what exactly are you doing? What is this offense designed to do? Um, is this an NFL offense? And I just, I'm not understanding why you're not using the different, uh, you know, uh, weapons that you have and that you signed and that you've been able to keep. But you know, that's gonna be on Ben McAdoo. But you know, he got fired from the Giants for a reason. Yeah, that that's exactly why he's with the panthers right now and in that seat. Well, you know, Matt rule said today that they are close. I don't know, it seems like something that we've heard for the last two years. So chris my final question for you is how close is David Tepper to cutting ties with that rule. The Panthers don't have their bye week until December four. So we have a pretty long way to go by the bye week. If the Panthers don't at least have three wins. I think it's time to to cut bait either way. I think Matt rule is going to have to get at least eight wins to keep his job for next season. But uh if you get to the bye week and you don't have at least three wins, uh then go ahead and cut bait, make sure that everybody knows, hey, the panthers are open for business next year and you know, and and just go ahead and just let it go and we're gonna just get ready for the NFL draft coming up in april. Uh and even with that, I'm not even sure if they can get three wins by the time the bye week comes, based off of how they're playing. Because if you look at their schedule, they're playing a lot of tough, tough matchups. I mean, the rams come to mind, you got the 40 niners, you've got the Bengals coming up and then you also have the buccaneers, you have the falcons twice, so maybe that's two of them. But you know, the falcons are still an NFL team, so you, that's not even a given. So we'll see what they do. But I think at least by december 4th when they come with their bye week, if you don't have three wins, that rule, you gotta be out and before any of that we look at the Saints next weekend. Something I thought was really interesting today. Both matt rule and baker mayfield really no panic there, they said because they hadn't even played an NFC south game that is coming up next and we will talk to you after that game, chris lee. Thank you so much.
