The Carolina Panthers struggled on both offense and defense during the 37-15 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. Plus, the seat keeps getting hotter for Matt Rhule in Charlotte.
Welcome back into sports extra like it or not. We're going to continue to break down this panthers loss and to help me do that. Let's bring back in Pat Welter who is at Bank of America Stadium. Pat, let's get right to it. It's a topic of discussion actually. We've been talking about it since last year's final game of the season. We've been talking about it since the first game of this season. I don't know if the seat can get any hotter for matt rule, but how secure is his job after this loss? Casey. I think matt rule said it best himself. You are what your record says you are. And that rule is one in 11, his last 12 games. He has one of if not the worst offenses in the league. He is known for turning teams around in his third year. Things are not getting better here. They're getting worse. It is becoming a copy and paste press conference every single week. And I think the most disturbing thing about this loss here to the 40 niners was that this time the defense didn't show up as well. And I think the problem right now is Caroline has been losing games with a healthy and good if not strong to elite defense. Well today they're missing jeremy chin. They're missing Frankie lupo who's been maybe the most optimistic part about this entire season. So how are things going to turn around now with their dif isn't there to bail out the offense and your quarterback and baker Mayfield is hurt. So that rule was asked about his job security after the game, as you can imagine. Didn't really want to talk about that said he's here to focus on the game. Said that he didn't want to make things about him. I give you credit for answering the tough questions, but you're the one everyone is looking at. Yeah, well today the Panthers fans weren't really looking at him. I don't think they wanted to show up at all. You could see it in the stands. A lot of blue seats and a lot of red shirts of course, 40 Niner fans that is in the stands. What was the reaction to seeing all those fans in the crowd? Yeah, I think it was kind of similar last week. It's just that Cardinals fans don't quite travel the same way 40 niners fans do. And this was alarming Casey to walk out here and see how much red there was before the game a couple hours before. Maybe you don't expect to see a lot of home fans. It was littered with red in the lower bowl. It was everywhere. The blue you were seeing was just empty Carolina panthers fans seats. So maybe that's what ultimately makes David Tepper make a change because fans don't have to come to the game. Fans don't have to watch this product that's been put out on the field here for on going on three seasons. This is bad football. It is not fun to watch. It is not exciting. Fans can speak with their wallets and this is a disturbing trend and and that rule said he didn't notice it. He said we didn't have to go to a silent count. Silent count. Silent count in your home stadium. This is not Los Angeles. This is Carolina panthers football. A team that's been to multiple super bowls. You have to have some more pride than that. Yeah. The excuses don't stop, right? You know, David Tepper once said a couple years ago that he wasn't going to accept mediocrity. That's he's getting less than that right now. You mentioned now a hobbled baker Mayfield. Of course that is why he came off at the end of the game. P. J. Walker comes in in garbage time. He had some decent completions. I don't know. Pat, is it time to start rethinking who is at this quarterback position? Is it time to, I don't know, bring in cam Newton because that's the running joke that it's been the last couple of years with Carolina panthers quarterback. They did it last year. I don't know. They might have to do it again because depending on baker Mayfield's health right now, they're down to their third string quarterback. I mean if Sam Darnell was healthy, he'd be playing in this game. He probably would have played in last week's game, that rule didn't go so far to say that. But at a certain point, you know, the place speaks for itself here. Sam Donald a couple of weeks away even if he gets activated. So Carolina is in trouble here at the quarterback position. Now, baker Mayfield tough guy, the stats troubling, but you gotta give him credit for being tough. He got that injury in the first half, said he felt like somebody might have fallen on him tough his way through the entire rest of the game. Now. He said, if he can play, he will next week. But he was seen in a walking boot in the press conference in the locker room, said he'd get an M. R. I tomorrow. So we will certainly no more than, and it only gets tougher next sunday when they travel to the defending Super Bowl champions. Los Angeles Rams Pat walter. Thank you so much.
