Kacy Hintz was joined by Cory Lavalette, sports editor for North State Journal and writer for the Athletic Saturday night. Lavalette covers the Carolina Hurricanes and is in New York for games 3 and 4. Hear what he thinks the Canes need to do to 'turn the page' for Game 4
Well, that's all Rod Moore's group can do is turn that page and they got to do it quickly because game four is tomorrow afternoon out on Long Island and that is where we find Corey. He is the sports editor of North State Journal, also a writer for the athletic Corey. Thank you so much for hopping on tonight. You were at that game last night. Let's get right to it. Boy, one of the most concerning things is something we've talked about all season long. The power play, the canes go over for four last night. Roddy said there might be some shuffling of the units, but that's not really the issue. So Corey, what is he said? The biggest thing is, is confidence and uh trying to overdo it. I think so, you know, Rod pretty much said he thinks everybody has good intentions that, uh you know, the team is trying to do the right thing, but maybe forcing it a little bit. So he wants the team to kind of go through their progressions, do what the, what the power play is supposed to do, follow the plan they have and the goals will come instead of trying to, you know, maybe force, force things a little too much. So that's, that's his biggest concern right now. Well, it's not like though they're lighting the lamp here at five on five either we know. Of course, it's no secret. We without fetch PA and now Tavo Tara and so Corey, where do we find the scoring here at five on five? Well, something I wrote today is, I think, you know, they need to get more shots from the point. You know, they really thrive on using their defense to, to get pucks to the net. They had significantly fewer shots uh on net from the defense last game. So I think that'll be a big key is getting the pucks back there working the puck down low, getting it back up high, letting those guys shoot. Uh, Brett Burns had one shot on goal in game three that needs to, to obviously go up and I think if they can get pucks back there, more, create those shooting lanes, get pucks on net, then they can, you know, either score from the blue line or hopefully create rebounds and, and get things uh, pointed in the right direction as far as five on five is concerned. Yeah, boy, we've seen that this team is a different team when Brent Burns is involved. All right, when you look at the final score, 51, it doesn't look like it, but boy, auntie stood on his head last night, he did everything he could on his end of things, but we know that going to these playoffs, we had to be cognizant just how much he played, uh, whether it's his health. You know, we just, we know the history here, but we also don't know what's going on with Freddie Anderson. We've got Peko Chekov here. What do they do tomorrow in goal when you're looking at this? I think they go back to, to Auntie Ranta. I think he's, he's too good. You know, Rod said you can pretty much throw away those, uh, those three goals at the end of the game. Well, the empty net goal and the two he allowed, um, you know, throw those away, they're kind of in garbage time. Uh, he kept them in the game. They, he Rod said himself between all the penalties and everything. They probably didn't deserve it to be in a 11 game near the end and, uh, it eventually came back to bite him, but I don't think he could pin any of that on Nancy. He was, uh, he's very good. He's been very good all series. I think he's matched. Ilias Sarokin, which is something I don't think anyone expected. Uh, the key will be for them is if he can match him again, you've got to get wins when you do that because, uh, Ilia Sarokin obviously is capable of stealing games. Yeah, absolutely. I think the word he used was miracle, a miracle to be in that. Alrighty, quickly I'm gonna put you on the spot. We know what's the next man up for these guys with just who we have missing in the line up. So if there's one guy that's got to step up tomorrow, who is it? I think it's Sebastian ao I think he has to be the best player on the team. Uh That's what they expect of him. Uh didn't have a poor game in game three, but I think, you know, I think you need more. You obviously like we talked about, you need five on five scoring and you need your best players to do that. So it'll be important for Sebastian AO to a good game. The Hurricanes. Sebastian not to be confused with the Islanders. And uh you know, and then Martin Nature too, he falls into the same category. They need both those guys to get going. Although Sebastian Aho did score for the Canes, the Islanders anyways. That's a story for another time, right? Corey Lale. Thank you so much. Enjoy the game tomorrow. Thanks Kay.
