Kacy Hintz and Pat Welter break down the Panthers season-opening loss to the Cleveland Browns.
welcome back into sports extra as we continue to dive just a little deeper into that Carolina panthers season opening loss to the Cleveland browns to help me do that. Let's bring Pat walter back in. Who was at Bank of America Stadium. Pat, I heard matt rule say, you know, he liked what this team was able to do to a degree. Once they started clicking, that was a key word right there. Once they started clicking what was behind the panthers slow start here today. Man, that really was an ugly start. Casey six total yards in the first quarter. The fire rule hashtag was alive and well on twitter and honestly based on what we've seen the last two years. I think it was justified. Now baker Mayfield said there was no secret sauce to the turnaround. There was no magic plan. They just started executing and matt rule said he did go over to the offense and told them, look guys, we knew we were gonna have to settle into this one and once they did, they did look great. I mean, baker Mayfield looked like he was back at Oklahoma throwing 75 yard bombs to Robby Anderson leading a go ahead drive. The problem, it wasn't the game winning drive. They did not win this game. And that is the key takeaway here and it's being positioned a little bit by matt rule and the players as a moral victory. I don't necessarily see it that way when you're in your third year as a head coach and you're trying to make the playoffs, arguably need to make the playoffs to keep your job. You have to win games like this at home against a backup quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. They did not do that and I think it could haunt them well. Let's take a look at baker Mayfield. You know, I heard him say that, you know, we were making such a big game, big deal about this game calling it like a Super bowl. I mean, you got to think that he felt a little bit, he wanted this to be a revenge game going up against his former team. You saw him there in the post game, What would you get his feelings going up against his former team? Well, the first word he used was disappointed and that goes to his performance, You know, he had several fumbled snaps throughout the game. He was consistently getting passes batted down. Also had that pick that he called kind of a slight miscommunication, there was shy smith and he was the first one to admit that that was all on him. He needs to stay under center longer needs to find better windows to pass the ball. That's something he's gonna work on. As for the emotions about going against his former team, a team of the Cleveland browns who basically, you know, eight money to get rid of him to sign to Shawn Watson publicly. He's downplayed a lot of the significance, but privately, you know, it meant a lot and I think we saw it there in the fourth quarter where he ran it in through the ball at the back of the end zone. That's that kind of passion you expected from baker Mayfield and it inspired his teammates. You know Jeremy Chin said that's one of the reasons he feels optimistic going forward. The things that they saw from baker Mayfield in the fourth quarter. He said he was actually more emotional going against texas Tech, his former college team that he was against the Browns. But he also admitted that Cleveland where he started his career spent four years there in its place. That's always going to be special. And that always means a lot well Pat talk about starting your career. Former N. C. State study Chemie Kwon do. Starting in his first NFL regular season game. There was a few welcome to the league moments especially going up against arguably one of the top edge rushers in the entire league. And Myles Garrett you spoke with him after the game. How would you assess his performance? Look he's a guy that has a lot of pride. Anybody who covered him in N. C. State knows that. So he was very disappointed that he got beat there a few times And those were big plays there in the third quarter against Myles Garrett who beat him not once but twice in a row. One play being a strip sack at a very key moment in the game And we said going into this, he really studied Garrett Clowney. So now he's going to study the film, assess his own performance, try to get better going forward. And this was a big emotional game for him as well. This is his hometown. He's a charlotte kid, grew up loving the Carolina panthers. So some of the nerves, he said went away during the preseason, but he still felt some of those today and being able to play for his hometown team is also special for him. Well now, Ikimi Quanyou and the rest of the panthers will head up to new york next sunday for Game two on the road. Pat Welter, thank you so much.
