Honeywell: Playing here is a privilege, it's definitely history in this game. And I'm glad baseball is back for the fans here
Durham Bulls right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. spoke to the media Monday ahead of the Bulls' season opener in Memphis. Honeywell has had quite the journey, missing not only the COVID season but the previous three years due to multiple surgeries on his elbow. Last month he made his MLB debut with Tampa Bay before being sent back down to the Bulls. Honeywell now looks forward to getting better and helping this team win.
you know, it's not, it's not a different game. It's just we just kind of, I know we're starting a new season kind of deal. So when we want to definitely bring winds down here anyway, I can uh, but it's definitely a good group of guys that's here. Hell the team. And I think we can, well, I think we're going to be a pretty good team. What were some of the challenges for you over this last year, even though obviously you've been, you've had a chance to be able to play? But just last year, kind of, what were some of the challenges for you to continue to grow? Oh, well I haven't pitched in a while. So I think this year was pretty big year for me finally getting off the hill a little bit. Um, but you know, other than that just continue working and putting the ball in the strike zone and putting it where I need to and putting it where I want and hopefully getting out because I can, since most guys haven't played much in the last year will be harder for pictures or hitters. Do you think in your estimation to get back into the group? I think it's gonna be hard for for for both sides. But you know, I think, I think brady and our staff has done a really good job with us over the course of the past two years being at the alternate site for for both years and I think they've done a really good job preparing us for for this season, you know, regardless of what happens in the end of it or. But I think, I think all, I think all guys, if you put the time in over the past couple of years, you should be ready to go. Can you sense the excitement amongst the other play last year and everything? Oh yeah. Oh yeah, it was, it was definitely a, especially when you get Face Time with another jersey on, I always say that because it brings a different, brings a different type of, it's definitely a different, it puts you in a different atmosphere out there, you know, you can, you can face your guys all day long. Uh but it's not like getting somebody out that doesn't play for your team and it's not your buddy, it like not playing. I mean, just because I know you maybe had a year off for injuries and like that, but you're healthy, you should be playing. I had four of the had four years off. It was, I think it was, it's definitely good getting back in the groove. So, you know, seeing a different team, even facing my own guys, like, it didn't really bother me to face my own guys, uh but these dudes did a really good job to help me and uh, you know, just continuing to get better us as a ball club and us as a team playing against one another. Your personal journey has been a little bit different than everybody else when everybody's talking about what they learned and what they've grown to appreciate in one year off. What have you learned in general? Just from like you said, you're four years away from the game and finally getting back in of course, that great moment, you know, getting to throw for Tampa, what has this journey been like for you personally? It's very different. So it's something I wouldn't give back. That's for sure. I think it's of, you know, a lot of people don't like to be identified by the game of baseball. I do, you know, I think it's a fun part of it. I like being known as a pretty good picture. I don't want to suck. So it's I think I like being a picture and I think, you know, I couldn't have done it without these guys back here is the number one thing uh, my family back home. Uh, you know, everybody who is pulling for me, I really appreciate it. And yeah, it's definitely, it was definitely a, it couldn't have been a more setup environment for a guy like myself. I feel like that's that's what I tell everybody. I think it's it was definitely an easier environment for me because it's definitely more controlled. And even even now it's it's a, I was under watch some watchful eyes for the last few years. And uh, it was definitely a controlled environment for the ATS which put me in a better spot than I had really imagined coming back from The three or 4 years that I missed out on in that regard. When people talk about, oh, it's, it's so hard to miss a year. You just say like amateurs, like you have no, well, you know, I think it's especially for, for gods who, who are healthy. I think it's, everybody takes different things away from the game of baseball. It's like, you know, no journey is the same and that's the cool part about this game. And you know, even when dudes are healthy, it hurt him to miss a year. I mean it really sucked for some guys, especially, you know, having to stay home or having to do whatever it was. And I definitely feel for those guys because it's, you know, a lot of people play baseball to get away from their everyday things because they're good at it. You know, it's something that they stand out in and uh missing a year is never really good for anyone and I hated it for all those guys. You kind of mentioned that you like being defined by baseball. So what do you think that you kind of can take from the last four years that maybe, you know, makes you appreciate the game moving forward? That's a good one I think, you know, just keep it in mind that it's definitely a game. He knows I've done a pretty good, well I say I've done a pretty good job, I got pretty frustrated the other day, uh, but you know, just trying not to get frustrated and stay in the course, you know, being being on the field is a blessing in itself. And I think knowing that I can go out and pitch every third or 4th, 5th day whenever they need me is definitely a A plus for men and you know, getting on and off the field healthy is definitely number one. Can you put into words that moment when you did get to make your Major League Baseball debut and just putting into perspective the journey to what got you to that point? I honestly don't think it got to me until like, this second day, I think the second or third day, because, you know, I try and keep it between the lines, you know, I had a I had a I got a job to do when I'm out there and try and put all that behind me, but oh, Kyle had mentioned to me in the boat and take it in and take it for what it's worth, you know, you only get to debut once, and there ain't too many people that have been through what you had to go through to to get here and you know, take it in and I did, I took it in and went out to pretty good innings and oh, it was definitely a lot of fun. It was something I looked forward to ever since I was five years old. I mean it was something that you can't really put into words I think, yeah, take the moment adult kind of like make put that down. Well, I mean I was happy to get back here. I love this place. I think, you know, playing here, playing here is a privilege and it's, it's definitely history in this game. And I'm glad that, uh, I'm glad baseball's back for the fans is the number one thing we've been playing ball, everybody's been, everybody's been playing and you know, we've trash talking and we were at each other's necks for the last three months and uh, you know, we're extremely excited to be here. And I think the best thing we can do is go out and win some baseball games for everyone. So I think that's everybody, we're pretty pumped. No, I mean, no, not really. It's just, it was just so different in such a weird situation because we weren't, we weren't playing like we weren't playing against other teams. There was trying to add a needed pressure anyway. But I think the, I think the whole thing is, is, you know, we were, we're definitely playing as one and I think that's the coolest part about it. So whenever they needed us up there, it was almost like we were an extension of those guys at the top. So there was not really any pressure per se. It was more so, you know, going and get you worked and like I said, brady, brady and nappy and Ray and hey, be all these guys have done a really good job for us, the training staff, everybody's been super good for. Is that the alternate side? And has this ready to go this year? More for Brent That's a good one. I can't, I came in thinking it was just gonna be, you know, you're good, you can move on. But that's not how it is. These guys do a really good job of developing arms and developing pictures. We got the number one ranked player in the minor leagues with us. I mean, it's pretty special, this whole, this whole roster special. They definitely know what they're doing and building organizations and, and put food on the field, especially here and yeah, they, I think I'm pretty sure it's always been a forefront of, there's a building the minor leagues and they've done it. They've done a hell of a job with that since I've been here. So, uh, they definitely know what they're doing, they're really good organization and now I got nothing but respect for these guys messed up for me for four years and it probably wasn't easy to do. And yeah, these guys, they definitely, sorry folks. But no, they do, they do a hell of a job here.
