Jon Scheyer: "I'm proud of the team responding from Saturday to get this win"
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer says he's proud of how the team responded after a loss, beating Louisville 84-59.
Uh, but once we settled into the game, overall, our defense is really good. Uh, kept them out besides, uh, they got a few transition baskets in the first half, thought we did a really good job. And then, you know, unfortunately for us, it's just we have to, you know, adjust without Caleb and, uh, you know, my heart breaks for him that he couldn't play today, like he's had such a good year and he, and he impacts winning in so many ways besides just the, the, the, the box score and just the stats. And, um, you know, we're gonna be without him for some time. I don't know what that time is. Uh, but we have to adjust, we have to step up just like we've had to do throughout the year with different injuries, whether it be Jeremy or Mark or Tyrese. And, um, you know, we looked at some different lineups, we went bigger, uh TJ and Sean, you know, getting them more minutes was a really good thing for us tonight and we need to move on quickly and get ready for, you know, a really tough game on Saturday, but I'm proud of the team responding, you know, from Saturday and, uh, to, to get this win just, but make sure you can hear me. Do you think you want to go big going forward now without, without Caleb available? Because I know Jalen didn't play a whole lot tonight. Well, naturally you can't look at the team the same way without Caleb without any of those guards and, you know, you guys don't get a chance to see our guys in practice and the job that TJ has done in practice, he's got better and better. He just needs to, he needs some game reps. Uh Sean, uh he's shown many different times and so what happens is Mark and flip are such key guys. It's hard to get minutes at times. And so for a third perimeter spot, you know, Mark can play there. TJ can play there. Um And TJ provides a shooting on the floor, you know, you, you, you better know where he's at when he's out there, even though he didn't hit tonight. All four of his threes are, they're, they're in and out, they're right there. But, you know, I talked to him before the game. Don't value your minutes off of making or missing shots like you work too hard, that's gonna happen. You just throw yourself into competing and I thought he did a good job of that tonight. Mark Mitchell is one of the best three point shooters in the AC C play after starting the year one for 22. What changed in the middle of the year for him? You know, Mark is, uh, like, I can't tell you how proud I am of Mark. And, you know, for me as a head coach, there's, there's a, there's a few of these guys that have been there from day one, from the minute I got the job that I called that first day that I wanted to be a part of this. And Mark is one of those guys. And you think about, you know, when you uh commit to somebody vice versa, he commits to us, we commit to him. You go through ups and downs together and Mark always literally always responds. He always lets you coach him, you need to get on him sometimes to be more aggressive and uh halftime did that today. And uh I just love to, she asked about his three point shooting though. It was Christmas break was a big thing and coming back and just trusting your work and being decisive, you know, and uh he's done that. Uh he's played inside out, not outside in, that's different and he's a complete player like he just, he does so much. I don't know that he gets the credit that he probably should nationally or even in our league when you talk about key guys. Uh I think anybody would love to have Mark Mitchell on their team because he does so much besides just the three point shooting. But you love when it goes in, uh, John Duke was plus 19 on the boards. Can you talk about that a little bit? Yeah, I just thought we had great effort, you know, and it helps when you have, you know, off the bench, Sean has four offensive rebounds. Uh, Ryan has three. just collectively we've learned we have to gain rebound and, you know, early in the year, I mean, you guys asked me a lot of questions. We've talked about it as a staff a lot like how are we going to rebound? We're smaller and we've done a great job, defensive rebounding. That hasn't been a thing offensively. We've got better as the season has gone on and uh that's something we're gonna have to do moving forward because those extra, winning those extra possessions tonight that those, those plays added up John at Miami last week, you made a point to say how understated Jeremy's career has been as a decorated Duke guard yourself. What has been most special about what Jeremy's done thus far for me, it's uh it starts with his commitment to Duke. That's the first thing. Uh it's so easy to go other places or to point the finger or to leave school early period and uh he's been committed to Duke every step of the way. Uh The second thing is how he's about winning and tonight and he's 19 points and 11 shots. He could have had 30 tonight. Uh I don't think any of you guys would disagree with me like he just played within himself. Uh He played both sides of the ball and I think the, the test of a, a Duke player who's been through a lot of moments, you know, he plays his best when the mo the moments, the biggest and uh he's not afraid of anything. So I think that gives our team a lot of confidence when he's out there and you can tell he's not phased. Does that mean you never make mistakes? No, of course, uh everybody makes mistakes. But for me what Jeremy's done in his approach being a team guy, being a Duke guy, uh like his legacy is gonna be felt, you have to be open to things that are different because I've told you guys this before. It's no secret. Like I'm not trying to be coach K nor can I ever be him. And so for him, the, the first year of the transition, basically, you have all new teammates, you have new coaching, new coaching staff, even though me and him have known each other for a long time. And, uh here he is, you know, he's put our team in position last year to win the AC C championship this year. I feel we're poised and right there with anybody to make a run. But a lot of it is because of him and what he's done. Coach you and Kyle have both spoken to the mental aspect of his game coming off this past week and just all of the media surrounding him. How do you feel like you did tonight? Uh, on the mental part more than just the stat line? Yeah, he did a good job. You know, he's just been, uh, really poised, steady, uh, competitive and, you know, to have a guy like Kyle, like he's gonna be a high draft pick and he's, you know, he's already scored over 1000 points and he's done some amazing things. He is a guy that is not caught up in stats. And when you have a guy who's your leading scorer and been really the, the number one guy in the scouting report for two years where he's just all about winning. Uh It's really contagious and I think he's done that and, you know, for him, it's easy to, uh I think the biggest thing he's done is just be present in the moment, you know, just grateful for each opportunity out here. And uh I've loved this approach the last couple of games besides getting the ball taken from him on rebounds. You know, that's maybe we could talk about that. But uh besides that, he's been a strong, tough, really good Johnny, you talk about execution being a problem late in the game Saturday. I don't know how much you can work on that in a 25 point game. But are you trying to coach through situations regardless of score tonight? And if that was the case, what do you see? Yeah. Well, we had, um, we played a lot more flow tonight, you know, where we weren't calling as much where we're working on, you know, making reason in transition and hitting open people. I thought we were just ok doing that tonight. You know, that's part of the 10 turnovers, but we also did a good job executing. And, you know, sometimes uh there are teams I've been on, there are past Duke teams where, you know, you put yourself in a position to win and you just completely botch the execution and it happens and it wasn't just one guy, it was just us, it was, it was on all of us and it gave us a chance and film the next day in practice. Uh We're gonna be in this situation again and where we know here's what we're doing like this is what we're gonna do and I feel this is a team we're gonna be in a position in some late game spots, whether it be you need a two, you need a three full court, half court. And uh we've practiced them throughout the year, but I think for us, there's a, there's an extra appreciation for it from our players at least uh where when we go through it in practice, it can be the difference of winning and losing and you know, two of the closest games we've had Clemson in here, we win one game with it and then at Wake, we come up short and they'll get a shot off. So for us to get back to it and, and to learn and know we're gonna be in that spot again. Uh we've had good growth the last couple of days, John. I know you guys are, you just said you're confident you guys can make a run next month and everything. You just lost a major piece of your rotation. Caleb, what is that challenge like at this time of year to, to have to face that? What, what was that like for you guys as a coaching staff and the team to, to deal with that and then plan to go forward? Well, one, you uh your heartbreaks for Caleb first and foremost, you know, that's where my mind went right away, you know, like he's uh he was basing in tears on Saturday on the bench, you know, he just, he wanted to play so badly. He had it going in the first half and uh that's the first thing and then after that, you have to, everybody has to step up and you know, you don't go, you don't jump ahead to months from now or weeks from, there's not months but 67 weeks, whatever it can be, the, the length of the season is all about preparing for the next game and we have to look at things differently. That's just the bottom line. There's not all of a sudden where you plug somebody in for Caleb, nobody does what Caleb does on our team and that's where you talk about, you know, TJ, stepping up, uh, Sean who already has been playing, but more of an opportunity. And then the guys that started like they've, those starters tonight, they've been in a lot of big time games already. We need all of them to compete every game and to be really good. And, uh, that's the bottom line, but we have to find something during this period. We haven't found yet. And I think it's an opportunity for individuals and it's an opportunity for a team where when Caleb comes back, we're even better, we're stronger and, uh, we're a different team back here. So, um, as dominating as this game was, I, I'm pretty sure you weren't sat, you weren't happy with the 10 turnovers in the first half. And obviously they cleaned that up in the second half with only four. what was the conversation like? And what did you see as far as the two different perspectives on why they were able to clean that up in the second half just, uh, settling in? And, uh, you're right. I didn't like it at all. I mean, it was the first thing I said in the locker room at halftime, our guys know it and I think overall this has been as good of a passing team that I've coached and uh I just thought we made some uncharacteristic plays in the first half. I mentioned earlier. I think, I do think part of it was flowing and trying to score quickly and, and all that. Um But we just settle then made the right plays inside out and I thought Jeremy really was steady for tonight. I thought he had that run in the first half, but also in the second half, uh just guys making the right play. And uh when we do that, I think good things are gonna happen, coach, so nearly all season long following a loss, you guys have bounced back with a dominant win. So with this in mind, can you give us some insight to the team's philosophy after a loss that allows you guys to lock in and show up fears for the next game? Yeah. Well, it's, I like that word fierce, you know, it's, uh it's what our approach is, you know, like, you know, I thought, uh I told you guys after the game on uh Saturday, I thought it was a different kind of game for us. It wasn't like we didn't compete or nothing like that, but we need to win the details. That's what we say. You have to win the details and win the margins and uh for our group, it would be hard to bounce back if they fought you or if they try to make an excuse why something happens. And they've allowed me, this group has been together for two years now in a lot of respects, they always let me and let our staff coach them. And so it allows us to really look in the mirror, hard address what needs to be addressed and then move on with a positive attitude and a hungry mindset going forward. And I guess it's ingrained in me. The first time I ever saw a game in Cameron was uh uh playing Wake Forest actually after Dukey lost two in a row. And, you know, uh Reggie Love started, you know, if Reggie starting, you know, you got some problems but uh the, it was just the mindset and I hope he sees that somewhere. Somebody sends it to him. That's but uh, but just the mindset coming off two losses and hopefully it doesn't even get to two. But in our program, that's just not acceptable and that doesn't mean it doesn't happen to you. Uh You get knocked in, knocked on your ass, you get punched in the face and you gotta get back up that to me, what our program has always been about since the first moment I ever saw a game in Cameron. And that's how we're always gonna respond. Not to make excuses, get back to work and uh play a 40 minute game, which we did tonight.
