Josh Downs: "They're getting the best receiver in the draft"
UNC wide receiver Josh Downs speaks with media after finishing his Pro Day in Chapel Hill. All 32 teams were in attendance.
What's the, what's the process been like, you know, getting ready for this and, and, and yeah, a lot different from college. So uh 1st, 1st taste of being a pro really? So I was, I've been in South Florida for like 23 months working out down there, Fort Lauderdale. Um just it's been a grind for sure being around a lot of guys similar to me, um best receivers in the country, I've been around Jordan Madison Tank. Um A perry was with me as well. So a lot of dudes down there working, getting better, um just grind with each other. So it's been good, good weather, great work. Um and being able to go to the combine is a blessing and then coming out here today with Dr Hand and just felt right and what were you looking to show up in particular here? Really? Just show off my, my hand, uh my quickness and the agility drill. So just confirming what they see on tape and what they already think, showing them in person that is real life. What have you been told about, about what range you're gonna be drafted in? What teams have you talked to. Uh right now, my agent is saying like top 50 it's probably like range from like 25 to 45 area he thinks uh but you never know until draft night comes, but I met with like pretty much like 2015, 20 teams. So I met with Patriots, Titans and the Saints last night. So uh probably gonna talk to the Cowboys after this. Um But yeah, a lot of teams met with so I guess, right. Yeah, the ones I recently had been Chapel Hill. So at the combine, I met with like 20 teams and then, uh, so far in Chapel Hill I met, I, I met with like eight. How much interest have the Panther shown? Out of curiosity? I'm gonna go take a test for the Panthers right now, but uh I haven't talked to the Panthers like a whole bunch as much as other teams as everybody would think. But um, a little bit. What kind of test wonder I'm gonna go take the test. So. Mhm. Have you ever done that before? No, I haven't. So I wasn't gonna do it at first. My agent was like, it's optional. So I was like, oh, he didn't want me to take it. So I was like, I'm not gonna take it, but then my dad, he took it when he was coming out. So he was like, man, he like, you gonna kill it, go do it. So it'll help you. So I'm gonna go take it. Mhm How much of a help is it having a dad who actually has been through the same process? Hey, it's, it's a crazy amount of help. Like even like even him playing in college, playing in the league, like um used to call him there at half time, ask him what he thinks, stuff like that and then he's on the field today over there right now. So, um just giving me tips, giving me pointers, I mean, and being my critic as well. So, uh he helps me out a lot of ways. Uh I like having him in my corner. He just got done coaching so he could watch me and my brother play full time on Saturdays and Sundays. So um just have my dad there and my mom, it's gonna be big for me. Uh have a lot of support in the stands trying to beat his score. I don't even know he got but yeah, I think he thinks I'm gonna beat it. That's why he told me to take it. What's your feedback then? And then what's your pitch been to teams? Um They just tell me they love my quickness, my route running. Um A lot of teams love my ability to go up and get the ball as well. So, uh they like that a lot and then um they just, they love me as a, a receiver and a possible returner. So uh just a lot of stuff y'all been seeing in the past few years. They, they see the same things and then uh um I just tell them that they're getting, they're getting the best receiver in the draft first and foremost, but they're getting a versatile player as well. Um I feel like I can make plays on all levels of the field. I'm not, I'm not a one trick pony, so I feel like they're getting a very versatile receiver. Did you say pe uh Yeah, X pe can use it out there for us when we take an interview. It's one on one you interview out here in front of a bunch of people. What's that? Yeah, I feel like the uh like the past few days haven't been as bad though. We're meeting with scouts and stuff, but like at the combine when you have formal interviews, you gotta talk to the whole staff. So I walked in the Ravens room, I'm looking at John Harbaugh the G M the owner. So I'm like, oh snap, I'm not expecting that. So like you gotta, you gotta tighten up, you gotta act, right? So um and then that's I had like 11 formal. So you gotta do that 11 times, 11 different teams. So um you basically, it's, it's a job interview, but it's the most important job interview in your life. And then after that, then you gotta go on the field and then uh show what you came there for. So I feel like it's, it's nerve wracking. It's a blessing. But I mean, uh when you play good, this is what you get to. So you gotta deal with it when you, you train and prep for, you know, things and stuff like that. When you have those interviews, what do you do any kind of training when you talk with people like that or do you read like? yeah, yeah, you do, you have training, you got like interview training sessions, you got like uh mock interviews. So um my agency like they got, they gotta do it in their organization, but he basically gives you my interview questions. So I probably did like uh like 78 my interviews before the combine. Um But I feel like a lot of the, it's, it's a lot of just feel you can't fake who you are at the end of the day. So um they're gonna see the bottom of it. So I feel like just um just like wrapping it over and over and then when it comes down to it, you just got yourself. So I feel like I've been like genuine with all the teams been myself. Haven't really just put on a facade. So I feel like I've been me, do you have a comfort level today with, with uh Dr oh yeah. So really, this is what I was looking forward to like running around Carolina has, has been great to me. I love it here. This is really like my last, um, in the building got a few more routes in with my quarterback. We weren't even supposed to do 20 plus routes. But once, once me and Drake and to get that rhythm, it's just back to, back to back and we just going and going and we were still gonna go, but it was like, all right, shut it down like you're good. So, um I feel like it's, it, it's been a blessing in Carolina. How many reps were you supposed to do? So I had talked to a lot of guys um that are in the process as well and a lot of them were telling me from 7 to 10 range. Uh I ended up doing like 20 but um I feel like I was just like route running is kind of my, my thing. So I'm like, I'm just gonna show it off a little bit, feel like I can run the whole route tree. So I ran everything curls, digs out, uh corner post, shoot a lot of stuff just to show the, all the scouts I can run inside and out. So I feel like I just, I did a little too many routes but I mean, I, I ain't mad training in Florida. Um You know, you said you were working with some of the best receivers out there, you know, coming up in this draft, I say you say you, you are the best receiver in this draft class. So those, those experiences, that competition Iron Iron type thing. What are those moments like? No, it's definitely, it's definitely a love but it's also a competition thing as well. So uh we would do like we would all like we would like to our 10 yard splits time, our forties, you come back, you selling your time and everybody's oh good run. But it's like in the back of your head. Like I gotta beat that. Like this dude, he's similar in the ranking to me. So it's like I gotta beat him. But also like then we, we go, we're going out as a group. Like I, I'm making good friendships with guys like and Jordan Madison Rice like them, them my brothers now. So it's like being around those guys for a few months. It is bond. It's that it's the last, last a lifetime. So I feel like it's competition but it's love too. What's, what's the most interesting or one of the most memorable conversations you've had with a team or a scout or a coach? Just just I'm sure there's been some weird ones maybe. Yeah, so I say I got to one of the teams was they was asking me about one of our coaches, coach Moody. So coach Moody, he's a, he's a character. He's a good dude. He's old max, good friend. He was just asking me about him. Kind of laughing, having some good jokes. I remember that. And then, uh the Bears actually made me play putt putt with them in our formal meeting. So I walked in and I was about to take a seat and they're like, no, no, no, come, you wanna play putt putt or darts? I was like, I was like, what they like put, put darts. I'm like, uh, put, put. So I missed the putt and then the receiver, coach came and made the putt. So I'm thinking they, so I, at the time I really realized somebody said it was probably testing your competitiveness. But I was like, I'm like, bro, if you're testing me off that, then, I mean, you got it. But yeah, that, that was probably the most memorable one just playing putt putt with the, with the Bears. They got like a cup. Yeah, they had a lot, they had like a little, you know how people have those greens. They had like a six, like a eight yard green and then a little hole and they had like two, they had like two uh putter. So use those. Yeah, it was in the, in the meeting room in the formal meeting room with a what, what's your plan for draft day? Uh I'm probably, I'd have to just say like a very good elite quarterback. I, I go along with the Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, um Justin Herbert, I probably wanna play with one of those guys, great, great pocket passer. Put the ball anywhere you need it. A guy that makes me look good and that I can make it look good too, but those guys are great so they make me look better than most. So, yeah. Did you get with Drake before the day and try to set up a game plan. Talk about this? Oh, we ran through that script probably twice already. So we were, we went to the field, was it Monday? We went to the field on Friday and we were running routes, but we were supposed to stick to the script, but we ended up just start throwing routes on there. We just working in here. So we ended up running like 25 routes and Drake is like, hey, hey, you good. Like you don't need no more like you good. And I'm like, all right. So that's how I usually go. Somebody gotta tell me to calm it down. Cool out after that. Like you're good. So I feel like, uh Drake is a great Drake is a gamer. He's ready to work whenever like he had practice on Saturday. He and we in the indoor Friday night though and then he goes to the scrimmage and go crazy. So it's just like man having Drake, it's, it's, it's been a blessing. Have you allowed yourself as the time is getting closer to the draft to thinking what that might might be like and just kind of all your dreams kind of coming true. Yeah. So, it's, it's, it's a blessing but at the same time it's also like, nerve, not nerve wracking. But it's a lot, like all you see on Twitter is just everybody judging you every day. So, a lot of people praise you. A lot of people don't think you're that good. So, seeing that kind of stuff, it's been a lot of good for me. So I've been, I've been pleased with that but um just seeing like a lot of people just, it's just all opinions right now. Nobody knows what's gonna happen. They, they predicting this, predicting that. But I'd say I'm, I'm, I'm excited. It's this month, it's gonna be a long month just because I'm gonna be waiting until that day. So it's a month from today, April 27, the draft start. Um I mean, I'm definitely excited for it because as a kid, like I remember watching the draft and I'm, I'm definitely gonna cry like I'm, I'm expecting to cry like right now on the night when I get drafted, it's gonna be, it's gonna be memorable and just having my family there. Uh we've been through a lot so having them is gonna be special and also what's it like not knowing where you're gonna spend the majority? Yeah. Yeah. You know, now it's different because in college you can, you get to pick what school um you go to and in the league it's the other way around. So like you getting picked. So it's not like I'm like, I feel like living in Miami, I'm gonna just go play for the Dolphins now. You gotta shoot, I could end up in Buffalo. So it was like, dang, you get the whole polar opposite end of the spectrum. But yeah, I mean, it's exciting just because you really just rolling the dice and you living in a city in America, I could be in L A. So it's just, it's cool. Do you, in terms of the, the detracting parts of your game? Do you not like when people call you short? Is that the one that really kind of fires you up a little bit? No, I kind of like when people call me, not like it but like, I mean, it is what it is like they gonna, they gonna in the sport of football, you got giants out there. So I'm gonna be considered short. I don't like the word small because I feel like I don't play small. I'm not small on the field. So I mean, somebody called me short. I mean, I'm, I got measured at 59 today. So that's what I wanted. Uh They got me at the combine at something else. I was kind of disappointed with that. I was like, dang, I'm like, I look bad but no, I mean, I don't mind being called short. I say small is more of something that just motivates me like OK, you think I'm small? I'm gonna show you something. Mhm Did you grow up a Falcons fan? No, didn't I my dad played for the Falcons but I grew up a Saints fan. So yeah, Saints fan from the jump. So when we won the Super Bowl, I mean that was, that was memorable. I had, I had met with the Broncos and Sean was in the room. I was like dang like I remember you, I'm watching you on the side, I'm like shaking his hand like starstruck so yeah that was that was cool. Mhm. Alright sir, appreciate you.
