NC State
Keatts: Forget about last year
NC State head coach Kevin Keatts speaks to the media at the ACC Tipoff in Charlotte.
everybody don't talk at the same time. I'm kind of curious. You know, what goes into, you know, obviously drug helps from a big school all miss, but some of the other guys are from all over the country, different types of schools and what goes into kind of picking who you're going to bring in. You know what, I think one of the biggest things for us is we try to find fit and we wanted to find some guys that number one fit the way that we're gonna play and then what's your needs, you know, what kind of needs do you have for your program and then from academically and social standpoint who can fit your university. And so we went out and identified four guys transfers including our freshman that you know, we felt like that could come in and contribute right away. You know, we struggled a little bit at our center spa because we had such young bigs and so we went out and got D. J. Burns and and then obviously from a point guard standpoint because we had transfers and I wanted an older guy there, you know, we were able to go get Jackie Joyner and then we lost Jericho Helen's and we got a guy like Jack Clark who we think can play multiple positions, forward positions. And so that's what happens. And you know, I think every coach in college basketball at the end of years trying to figure out what their roster look like and how did you get to a point where you can put some guys out there in my case. I wanted to put some older guys around to smith to give them the opportunity to play freely. What was the pitch to, to get him to come back? I mean, so many guys leave and you get this guy to stay despite the circumstances, it wasn't a pitch. You know, I was just there to be very supportive of him and you know, whatever decision he made, I was willing to live with, you know, I think you would have to talk to him, but I got, I think he got to the point where he wanted to be a guy that could possibly be a lottery pick. He decided that he wanted to come back. Now of course now I was happy, I was wanting to happy guys. I felt like it was christmas, but as far as the decision, I had nothing to do with that, I was just very supportive. I was a shoulder to lean on if he needed one. Some teams have tomato or a tagline for the season based on either the players and state of the program. Yeah, we do. We we talk about art, art stands for accountability, relentless toughness and together and that's what we want to go by. You know, so when you see art for us, a R. T. T accountability, accountability, relentless toughness and together and that's what we talk about. We talk about when you're having success. That's what we want to go by when you're struggling at times or you're going through some adversity throughout the game. That's what we want to be when you look at your group of guys this year. What are some of the main differences you noticed between now and this point last season? Well, I got, I got, I'm too deep right now at every position and we haven't quite frankly been that way for a couple of years, even the year where we were nine and eight and we want all of those road games. Remember Devon Daniels was having an incredible year and then he ended up going down. If you look at, you know what, I'm trying to get back to my first three years here at NC State. We won over 20 games, we were 11 and seven, my first year beat a lot of top 25 teams, but we had depth, we could play fast, we could pressure you, we could get out in transition and I'm trying to get back to that type of team wins and losses for you. I think every, our guys compete. Um, and so, you know, I'm not gonna say compete because that's what's expected when you play in our program. But you know, we want to get back to winning, we're not going to shy away from that. Um, you know, winning is a great formula for success and we wanna, we wanna be able to do that part of it. So, you know, our mindset is we're just gonna put our head down, we're gonna work our butts off and we're just gonna play together and compete and that's what we look for. Have you seen, well he's matured and a lot of that. I would contribute that from number one. He's matured because he's a sophomore a lot of times freshman become sophomores and they become good players, but he did something unique that most people don't do as a freshman. He has such a great year, being able to go to the combine and being able to go and work out for so many different NBA programs I think has helped him mature. He's taking positive feedback, he's taking negative feedback and certainly he's brought it back into our program until his game. Also does, he always seemed like it, he's still streaky as a shooter, like his percentages look great. I mean, how do you kind of work with him on picking a spot? Yeah. You know, I, somebody else said that and I always tell people, I kind of disagree and here's why, you know, I put him in such a tough spot. Number one kid from high school that has to come in and play that many minutes, Number two, you know, we didn't have a reliable at that time, a post got to throw the ball In there. So some of the shots that he took it because that's what I needed in the take, we needed him to take in the game. I think you'll see um better percentage or more accurate shots because he got other pieces around him now, you know, him and hebron, you know, between the two of those guys that took 27 shots a game they had to um then you add in Jericho, but we just didn't have enough experience around those guys to help win. Is there anything you did on, on a personal level to china kind of refocus reenergize in the off season just to kind of get your head right? I didn't do anything that I don't do normally. You know, after the season it's over always go away and take a little time to myself and see where I can get better or you know, reflect on some things that we really did well and you know, when I looked at this season, you know, I wanted more energy into the program. You know, I wanted more experience into the program and you know, we were able to go out and get the four transfers and then we were able to make some adjustments with our staff and bring a little bit more energy and none of that's a knock to the players that we had prior or our staff, but you know, obviously we wanted to make some change. Hey coach. What message do you have? Well I just be patient and I know that's not always necessarily what people want to hear. Um, but I like our program. We've had some really good, uh, summers by going to Bahamas. We also, you know, have had 10 practices, you know, leading up to the Bahamas, we've had some adversity. Our chemistry is really good. We have depth. Um, just forget about last year, really forget about last year and concentrate on the previous three or four years where we had a lot of success when you look at some of other states programs, whether it's football or.
