Duke
Lawson: "We're in the midst of our best stretch (of basketball)"
Duke women's basketball head coach Kara Lawson praises her seniors after the team beats Virginia in its final home game of the regular season.
Solid win for us. Uh I'm really proud of how we came out and played, uh, offensively and defensively. Um, you know, this Virginia has been playing really well and, uh, you know, I was worried about this game and our ability to control them on the glass, um, control them from beyond the arc. Um, they have a number of really good three point shooters and, um, I thought we just stayed pretty locked in most of the game, uh, defensively and, um, you know, then offensively, I thought our transition game was, was really good. Um, we got out, um, you know, in transition and we're able to get some, some points and, and pushing the pace so another win for us. Um, you know, it's just, I'm, I'm proud of the group to, to be sitting here and, and, um, you know, still have a chance to keep, to keep winning games is, is awesome. Uh, because I think, you know, it's, you get asked this a lot about this team and age and youth and experience and all that stuff, but now that you've got to the, the very end of the home regular season stretch here. Um, do you feel like you all are playing your best basketball of the season after? Um, I think we are in the midst of our best stretch. It's hard to, like, sit after a game and, you know, until you evaluate and say this was our best game of the season. I, I don't know that I can say that, but I think over the LA, oh, in February, I think over that stretch we've played really well. I mean, even the games we've lost in February, you know, um, you know, we went, we went to Virginia Tech and, you know, we were, we were in it, it was a possession game, um, down in a place that's really hard to win. Um, obviously Notre Dame here. Um, even the games that we lost in this month, I felt like we were competitive and, and, um, that was different than January for us, you know, the games we lost in January, you know, some of them, we weren't in them. And so, uh, I do think that February has been our best stretch of the season. Um, and it was, or is our hardest opponents of the season too when you look at who we had to play and the stretch of rank teams and, and all of that. So that makes me feel really good and confident, um, of how we're playing. And, um, you know, now we have another opportunity for a road game. Uh, here on Sunday. That will be, you know, a challenge that'll be a bear. But, um, I think we're excited for it. Ok. Hey, um, um, over here, um, it seems like it wasn't that long ago. We were talking about starts of games in a negative sense to getting off to slow starts being behind 13 to 1 or whatever, off the bat and the complete, it's been a complete turnaround in recent games. What's going on there? WW why is your team able to get off to such great starts? Now? I said this last game and I think is probably one of the areas we've improved the most is our attention to detail and our application of the scout and what we're asking them to do and what we've prepared them to do. And as that has improved, everything about the game has gotten better. Uh So at the beginning of the game, they have a better understanding of how the other teams trying to attack us. Um, they have a better understanding of how the other team's trying to defend us. And over the course of the game, there's just more adherence to scheme now than there was at the beginning of the year now than there was in January. I mean, that's how it should go because you, you should keep getting better as the year goes on. But I would say that has been, you know, one of the big, biggest improvements for this team. It seems like Duke was able to speed Virginia up a little bit, you know, maybe a little bit outside the comfort zone. Was that one of, of, of the scout emphasis? I think for us, what we wanted to do, um with, with them was um disrupt as best we could. Um, but try to keep them in front and make them make tough shots. I thought for the most part of that game we did that, uh you know, Clark got loose a little bit on us, but I thought they also thought she made some tough shots. Um and I got to the free throw line but by and large, I thought we, we made them take really hard shots and um you know, that was, that was good for us and just looking at the stat sheet, the one thing that really jumps out, Virginia only had five assists, it's pretty hard to hold an AC C team to five assists. Can you talk about that? Well, it's not something that's a goal of ours when we go into the game, but we really wanna make people have to work for challenge shots. And so a catch and shoot is not a challenge shot um in our book and that's where assists will come off of someone being just able to catch and shoot, whether that's a dump down for a layup or a three pointer. That's how an assist happens if someone has to create for themselves. There's no, that's not an assisted play, right. That's an unassisted play. So we just feel like the more people have to create for themselves over the course of the game that's better than someone just getting open shots and, and, and comfortable and getting catch and shoots. So I'm, I'm guessing that we did a pretty good job of that. I have to look at the film and see, but that's kind of just how our defense is built. And let me ask you about Reagan information that she's in a really good place right now, Reagan played well. Um, thought she came out aggressive, um, really attacking and I've said this before when she plays well offensively, I just think we're a really hard team to beat and, um, she's, you know, what, what, what you'd expect. I mean, I, I think I said this earlier too, like this time of year, you know, your, your, your veterans had to play well, like you, you, you can't go into a game and not have your juniors and seniors play. Well, tho those are the ones that you're really counting on. You hope your young players, your freshmen and sophomores have progressed to a point this time of year that they can function and they can impact. But the ones that you, like have to know that they're gonna give you good games is, are your, are your upper classman? Are your veterans? And I think there's just been a different urgency about Reagan and Kennedy both, you know, in the last couple of weeks and our team has been the beneficiary of that. Ok. Uh, hi, coach, you know, your team's coming off two wins against two ranked opponents and, you know, as you said, this Virginia team's been playing really, really well lately. How did you keep your team focused, um, going into this game? Yeah, I mean, like, we, we don't really talk about like rankings like that. I mean, you know, we're not ranked, does that mean we're not good? Like, I, I think we've never been a program that worries about that stuff. We, we talk a lot about respecting everybody and understanding how um talented people are and if you do that every game in this league and you give the appropriate amount of respect to everybody, then you'll prepare well and you'll give yourself a chance to win. And so, um, you know, we, we don't get into like those types of things. We just look at the opponent across from us and, and try to give a good effort and people always talk about your team's defense, but the offense was kind of really the star of the show tonight. Your offense played really well. How essential is it to keep kind of keep that momentum going, headed into March? Yeah, I think we're a good offensive team. Um II, I might be wrong. I'd have to, I think we're like third or fourth in the league in field goal percentage, you know, in a 15 team league. So we've consistently been one of the most efficient offenses in the AC C all year at one point. I think we were second. Um, most of, most of the AC C year, we were second. Um, and, and so we, we've, we've played well, um, on the offensive end and I think we're a little more balanced this year and that's helped us, um, and a lot of times, you know, uh, even in a game like tonight, like we could have scored more, but, you know, we're trying to play the clock once we get in the last five minutes, if we have a lead, we're gonna, we're gonna dwindle those possessions down. So sometimes that, you know, maybe you could have scored 80 something. But, um, we try to play smart and play to win, not play for the scoreboard or stats. And that's always gonna be a focus of our program is like play the games to win and if we do that then I think we will win more than our fair share. Yeah. Hi, coach, kind of looking towards the future. Y'all are headed to North Carolina this Sunday. Um What are you, what are you going to do? How are you planning to capitalize on today's momentum? Like, what are you gonna tell the team? Yeah, I mean, we wanted to definitely play well, today and the most important thing was that we won the game. Um, you know, Thursday, Sunday, you have to, like, regroup really quickly no matter who you play to, to get back and get blocked in. Um, you know, this was a team we're playing for the second time and now we're going on Sunday to a team that we're playing for the second time, um, on the road. Um, you know, it'll be a jungle over there. We know that and um they're a really good team and one of the top teams. And so we're, we're gonna have to play well just to have a chance, not just to win, just to have a chance. So, um our group understands that, um obviously, um it was, could have gone either way the game here. Um So we have a lot of respect for um the opponent and, and what they're gonna bring to the table on Sunday. And, um, you know, hopefully we bring our best effort to combat that. Uh K there are a couple of fans who um have been making some really well designed um signs, I think they made one with you on a last home game. It's a like loss and an order I think is what it said. Um And so I was wonder if you had any thoughts on just those signs and with it being the last home game, just what this crowd and this community has been like this season and, and how it's continued to grow during your time here at Duke. Yeah, I kind of guilted them into making me a sign. I don't know that I should publicly have admitted that, but they're students here, they're awesome. They've been at every game, nearly every home game. And, um, I, I complimented them on their signs 11 night and, uh, I told them, I, you know, I was been waiting every game to walk out and have one and, and so, uh, you know, I guilted them into that, I guess. So I got one last game. I was pretty pumped. Um, it was a great, it was a great and it is drawn by, by, by a Duke student. I met her after the game and, um, she draws those. I mean, it's amazing. Um, yeah, the creativity and just the connection that we have with our fans and, you know, this, this team is, um, I think people have fallen in love with this team. You know, if you started with us from the beginning and, you know, we're, we're kind of young and don't, didn't really know what we were doing most of the time. And, um, you know, you've, you've just watched us grow, you know, tough losses, big wins, you know, home wins, road wins, um, close calls, um, the season's had everything and I think that's why people love sport, you know, is the journey that it takes you on the journey. A game can take you on a great game. The journey of season can take you on a team, takes you on and there's groups taking us on a journey. I'm fortunate enough to be along for the ride and um, you know, it's not done yet, but um it's just been so fun to coach them. I mean, it's been really rewarding. They, they're awesome and every day they come in, win or lose every day, they come in and have energy and be laughing and excited for the opportunity. And, um, that's, I mean, honestly, like, I wouldn't wanna wanna coach any other group. They're, they're just, you know, fun to be around any more questions for coach last one. Yeah, I was wondering, um, on senior night, could you just talk a little bit more about Camilla and Kennedy and what their experience has brought to the team this year? I can't say enough good things about both of them. Um, you know, Camilla has brought in intensity and a competitiveness to our group from the beginning. Um, she's worked really hard, um, you know, sat out last year because of injury and, and now, um, has worked really hard through the summer to get herself, um, ready to play and, um, has just been a great force for us off the bench offensively and defensively. I mean, her length, blocking shots, her ability to finish, not just around the basket, her high post jumper. Um, and she just loves to play and she competes and she has great energy. Like her voice is really powerful. It's powerful in practice. It's powerful in games for us. And she's just come in and just tried to be a sponge and it's, it's different here, you know, um, when, when you change schools, like it's not better or worse, it's just different. And so she's had to learn a new language. She's had to learn new terminology. She's had to learn new plays and she's just embraced it all and just been, um, just a model teammate in every sense of the word. Um Fortunate to, to coach her, it's been, been a privilege and, and then Kennedy, um, you know, Kennedy quite literally changed the course of our program when you look at, um, you know, I think of her saying yes, you know, to come to Duke a couple of years ago and we, we didn't have that anchor yet, you know, we didn't have that person to kind of build our defense and our offense around and her skill set, her intelligence. Um All of those things have set us up to be a really good team these last two years. Um She is, we run everything through her and, um, she is just one of the smartest players I've, I've ever coached or been around and she is an incredible teammate, just um patient and she needed that patience early on because this was a young team. She went from having super experienced teammates to super inexperienced teammates and she's brought them along. Um her impact not only has uh you know, she set our program up for a great success these last two years, Kennedy's impact will live for a long time in our program because she has shown our young players what it means to be a duke player, professionalism, intelligence, great teammate, sacrificing what you need for team success, what you, what, what you need to be for team success and being very, very excited and happy when other people do. Well, um she's everything that you'd you'd want in a Duke player. And you know, I'm again, um it's been an honor and a privilege to coach her as well.
