The Panthers head coach addresses the quarterback situation to the media following the first practice at training camp.
Alright guys I'm sure you guys are gonna ask me about the J. C. You know um uh experience a little bit of soreness, discomfort you know you know after um coming off of yesterday so we made the decision to put him on pup just to protect him. Hold him out. He's chomping at the bit to practice. Wanted to practice but just thought it was best precaution not something we're concerned about long term but just thought it was best to ease him into it. Um And that that will kind of be a day by day thing based on the doctors. Yeah. Okay. Yes. Yeah the first two days we decided to have a Sam for day one. Sam took all the one reps with the one group, baker took all the two reps with the two group. Excuse me tomorrow we'll have baker take all the reps with the first group. Sam take all the rest of the two group. And the thought process being we really wanted our guys to have the ability to work with the same receivers for the entire day. You know especially you know obviously bakers you've got the installed last night and this morning he's out here trying to execute it. Uh So we want those guys to have some consistency at receiver for the first two days and then we'll start to mix things up a little bit more and then we had matt and P. J. Split the threes. Yeah I mean I think it's gonna it's gonna take a while it's also gonna take a while for everyone with the timing with the receivers because they're, they're tired. You know, they have, they've been, they've been doing other drills, you get out here, it's hot, you know, you're, you're running and later in practice. So a couple of times I thought baker made some big throws down the field and just the feedback I was hearing from Ben to him was, hey, throw it there, you know, like don't, don't throw it there and make the receiver get to it, you know, as as receivers get in game shape, uh, they'll, they'll, they'll catch those things in stride. So, um, it's, you know, it's gonna be a long working process, excited to see it happen. You know, it's the beginning of us, you know, establishing our standards of how we're gonna play, You know, in terms of our effort, in terms of our execution, all those things. So you expect the guys to come out and it's obviously not real long. I mean after stretch, I think it was like 60/h and 10 minutes an hour and whatever. So it's not a real, real long practice, but I want to lead, focus on execution and I want really good effort and now these guys have to go recover their bodies and get ready to come back and do it again tomorrow. Yeah, there, there there's uh, well there's pros and negatives to both. Now. This practice becomes a little bit hotter. That's the negative of it. A lot of guys had good feedback. They like to walk through right before practice. I think that helps them, I think, you know, we have some new players walking through before practice helps you a lot more practicing better. Um, you know this, but at the end of the, the schedule, schedule, schedule, you know, whatever it is, the guys will attack it. I thought it was good for us today and hopefully we can continue to battle the heat as of right now. No, I mean if if the guys came to me and said, hey coach, we want to start at seven am I would always listen to the players, but something like their sleep too. So I think, I think, you know, at the end of the day we're gonna play, we're gonna play september 11th, you know, at one o'clock. So, um, you know, as long as we're smart guys, hydrate, you know, we got a lot of guys wearing hoods and long sleeves, we're gonna address that a little bit. Like, I can't tell guys what to wear, but you might wanna wear a t shirt out here. So, um, but yeah, well the quarterbacks don't run as much as some of those dbs have it on, but you know, I'm not the style police and we'll give them the best, you know, they're the best, the best information to hopefully keep them healthy one. Yeah, it looked to me like, you know, I don't know if the ball came out of his hand, right? But I mean it looks like it kind of got caught up in there. It's really nice job by keith, you know six ft four corner, you know, that's your job to go up and pluck the ball. Yeah, I think uh I think, I don't know if I've ever said it necessarily like that to him, I think at the end of the day we want guys to you know, we want to eliminate careless mistakes, not doing your job trying to do too much, but we want these guys to go play aggressive. I mean their NFL quarterbacks, I want them to go back and I want them to make the throws, but just what I said last year, I want them to make the throws on time where they're supposed to be and I mean the great thing is with with Ben and Shawn back there, they are, they are all over everything. So I you know, I can I can constantly hear the feedback and you know, they'll get the timing and we want them to be aggressive but we also want to be smart about what we do and I think the key is just execution
