Maye on double overtime win vs. Duke: 'It was a fairytale ending'
UNC quarterback Drake Maye addresses the media after what could be his final home game at Kenan Stadium.
Describe the reaction fans pouring out the fields just for sake. Yeah, just, just a great way to end season and, and Keenan, you know, shout to the fans, they were huge, you know, they're staying, um, staying the whole game, uh, huge in overtime, making noise down there. Um, I think it was only right that it and down there in the student section and, uh, you know, the defense getting stop in a big two point play, um, what a game, you know, what an ending and, uh, you know, just out to the guys for never quitting and, uh, you know, just a great way, like I said, and then Keaton on, uh, on senior night, what you see on that price as we catch in our regulation by, uh, the DP I, yeah, well, you know what a catch, um, he's playing, uh, playing through injuries. Um, he gets banged up. I made another big, uh, slant catch on the, on the two minute drill to get his field goal. And, uh, Bryce is just a ball player. He always tells me just to put it up, he'll go get it and, uh, he's proven that time and time again, um, that catch to get us down there on the, on the, you know, the toggle on the kind of the fist fight for the ball. Um, I think he caught it and the DB always tries to come late and they always think they got it. And, um, you know, like I said, Bryson's a ball player, he goes up and get, he's a mismatch nightmare and, uh, now he's got a bright future. Uh, no, I should have put some more on it. But, uh, you know, anytime 18 he's got a good chance of putting it high. I think he's got, you know, I like my chances with Bryson coming down with it. Um, you know, like I said, I should have drove it a little more. Um, you know, but I left it kind of on the, on the outside of him. Tried to, um, I kind of, it was a similar play like that. Actually, I don't know if it was against Georgia Tech or last year or something similar play where Bryson made a catch like that and, uh, he's just, you know, made time to time, you know, time to time games, making catches, you know, at the crucial, crucial moments. And, uh, you know, he's got that close gene, you know, it's a tough look, you know, I think number two, he was looking at me, I think he was going to try to, you know, jump it. But, you know, at the end of the day, um, you know, we got a lot of options in that play. I'm not trying to, you know, spill our, um, our secrets but, uh, there's a heads up play by John Cope and, uh, just, you know, playing football and, and that's just some backyard and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Just, yeah, exactly. Trying to keep my head up. Um, I like, uh, it's one of the best attributes to never kind of, you know, put my head down and just, you know, taking a, taking a sack or taking a tackle, try to keep my head up and, you know, thought if I'm getting tackled to try to do the same thing, I Mario, I'm gonna pitch it back just, you know, trying to get extra yards and try not to have negative play that late game drive. It's now you can get two of those, you know, want to take the touch on them in the regulation and Google, guess how rewarding it is. Yeah, just a great feeling in the locker room. Um, you know, I was just, you know, telling the radio crew in there, um, it, it felt a little bit easier, you know, getting, need to get three points, you know, this time if we're always trying to get seven and that's tough. You know, the defense is playing back and, uh, you know, depending on the defense they rushed three and I got eight guys sitting back there. But, you know, I felt we were surgical and, uh, you know, the, the offensive line, you know, credit those guys. I think we, we had to have a bunch of plays, you know, offensively and, um, you know, those guys, you know, block their butts off. A lot of them are seniors and, uh, you know, like I said, um, you know, no Burnett about him, um, you know, player of the game, in my opinion, clutch and, uh, you know, try to write him off. Um, and Noah just, just kept delivering. Um, and, uh, you know, he deserved a lot of credit and I know you got a lot of setback and, and, uh, you know, beat up for the state last year. But, uh, I think we, you know, hoist him around the campus, you know, for this upcoming, for this next week because he deserves it. Yeah. Uh, he catches it great. Yeah, just, you know, a couple of screens, a couple on the flat. Um, I'm already on, he catches it great. You know, I think he plucks it, you know, one of the best, um, you know, running backs, I've seen catch it. Um, you know, since in my time playing football, um, that, that first overtime I pulled it and he had a walking touchdown. I'm trying to do too much. Um, we would have won the game earlier and you miss Nate on the next play. So, you know, big o is, is, um, he doesn't say much but, you know, when, when he does, um, it makes me laugh and, you know, I love that guy and I'm glad to have 28. I think he's the best back in the country. Um, he's starting to get a little wiggle to him too and, uh, he's just, you have to see him in the weight room back here. Um, it's unbelievable. Yeah, this is vision. The main thing last year. I think it was his vision. I think sometimes he rams his head down. Um, the guy is low. I think the big thing he's, he's shedding more tackles because they've got to hit him low, um, because he's so big and, uh, he's doing a better job of vision and seeing that and, uh, he just keeps proving how much he run for tonight. I'm not sure. 170 I mean, go le you know, this Duke defense is good. They're good up front. Y'all see y'all saw a couple of times with Dee lineman, um, slow moving our guys and, uh, you know, you can get on the line for that. That's good. It's a good ball. They're good up front and, uh, number nine, he's a great player. Five is good. So, uh, you know, Craig the big o and, and those guys up front, um, he deserves it. Go ahead. Yeah. No, trust in him, you know, I think, you know, it's kind of like a, you know, a pitcher with a no hitter. Don't you try to go up and say something to him? Uh, just kind of be quiet and let him do his thing, you know, just what he does for a living. Um, he does that and practices all day. So, no, no offense to kickers. But, uh, you know, that's kind of what you expect and that's all I do, you know, all day and it's easy to say, you know, with that much pressure on the line. Um, but he stepped up, you know, I need to, you know, go buy him during this week or something because, uh, I think he needs to, you know, go, have, go, have a good night is what he needs. So to hold on to the fourth quarter, was there a moment where you thought that all those field goals you had to settle for the red side? Oh, yeah, I think, you know, we knew that and I think, you know, in the first half, um, just, you know, it's crucial when we're getting down there and moving the ball. So, well, you know, I'm 65. you know, I've been eating a lot of Lampi at 230 now, so I'm not getting on two QB sneaks. Um, that's just, um, you know, quite honestly, just piss poor and, uh, you know, I credit myself on, on being able to get a yard and, uh, credit those guys up front, um, you know, credit Duke, you know, well coached the fake punt, the onside kick. Um, you know, obviously they're, they're giving us up a little bit and doing some extra, you know, where it's, um, film watch or giving game adjustments and, uh, you know, I think, you know, just like I said, we, we bounced back and, and took all the negatives and, uh came up with a positive go le um, you know, um, you know, we've got some option out stuff and he just keeps on running by him. Um, he was mad at me a couple of times and II I thrown him, um, I get it out earlier. Um, it's just the thing that I've always, you know, kind of my dad always said to give him a chance, you know, the coaches always say give him a chance. So, uh, you know, sometimes the best playing football is on throwing deep ball. Uh, but at the end of the day, he's running. So I'm gonna start dropping back and launching it, you know, throw it as far as I can. I think that last one was, was better, better timing, um, could have hit him in stride but, uh, at the end of the day, um, he's running by people and he wants the ball and he cares so much and just glad to have him move Carolina Blue. But if this game does serve as a book in for your career, you know, just put it in a row. Yeah, just a fairy tale ending and I'm glad it ended this way. Um, it would have been heartbroken if, um, you know, if not, if it went the other way and, uh, like I said, no better way, you know, it gets a rival, um, with the, you know, with the fans storming the field, um, with a senior night, um, just, you know, a lot of emotions and just glad, you know, I think this is why I came here, you know, Carolina for playing these big time games and, and try to do my best to, you know, help us win and uh just a dream come true playing quarterback here. Important. Yeah, no one ends up getting the job and missed one kick earlier season. A remarkable story. Have you guys seen that play? I like it. Yeah, I mean, um Noah Burnett, I mean, he's a kid from, you know, a local kid from Raleigh, um come here as a walk on and he's worked his butt off. Um, you know, like I said, brought Ryan in, brought co in to, you know, compete with him and be the job and he used to continue to work, you know, put his head down and uh just goes to show, you know, guys like that, you know, are crucial and uh huge for our football team and uh just credit for him for, um you know, stick, stick with it. And, uh, you know, being huge and I think, you know, even, even the kickers a lot of slinging and, uh, he had to do a kickoff guy a little bit too. So he's just being a Swiss army knife and, uh, I think he made Hummings tonight. 65 or six. So, I mean, like I said, when you hoist them and, and fan, crowd them around the, the, the stadium today is what we needed to do. Uh Yes, sir. Yeah, I think, you know, with the on the podium with the AC C crew um with all the fans chant one more year. Um The is awesome. Uh Yeah, I think just soaking that in and seeing how many of the fans, you know, just um care for, you know, North Carolina kid. Um I grew up coming to Keenan. Um I grew up as a fan and uh like I said, just, you know, like I said fairy tale ending and uh you couldn't write it better. Yeah, I was just trying to get out of there. Um A lot of people coming up to me, I was, you know, signing some hands but just trying to get out. I didn't really know what to do. Uh my first kind of experience, I think my freshman year um they did it when we wake but like I said, I was a nobody, I was with May's brother. So uh other than that just trying to get out of there and not have anybody, you know, grab my hand or, uh, the last thing you need to do is get bombarded and something happened. So, yeah. Yeah, I think, um, you know, I still, I'll still take the last year of the game win touchdown over that. But, um, you know, I was talking about it earlier this week with the guys, you know, I think, I think Luke, you know what Luke did, um, his senior, his senior matchup, you know, at Cameron, I think he went for 3015. Um, you know, I don't think I can compete with that. Um I went two and o against Duke, so maybe I have that on him. I know he had a couple of tough losses to Duke. Um, but I think Luke got the up, he's with 30 points, 15. I think he clamped Zions iron, broke his shoes. So last month, last month I told, I told how to ask this on his behalf. But, um, yes, gli for sure. Yeah, I got a little, uh, little, uh what do they call it? Horse, horseshoe or something? What's it called? Yeah, Charlie Horse, Charlie Horse. But hey, um I told myself last year I had the exact same exact same play. Um I think it was number two as well, that same kid um in the left corner of the end zone. Uh I think it was at the, the two minute drill at the end of the half and I ran out of bounds and I told myself, I told the, the quarterbacks in the locker room, I said, I'm feeling a hurdle today and, uh, I tried to do it. I think he barely got me. I almost had him. I think it was a pretty sweet photo y'all posted. Um, but at the end of the day, just competitive, you know, touchdowns right there. Um trying to make a, you know, highlight play. Um It's gotten used to those falls, you know, like my body is adjusted, you know, kind of falling like that. So I'm just glad uh you end up scoring that drive. Yeah, just kind of feeling a hurdle today, you know, it's kind of one of those feelings where you got some smaller D BS kind of go up and make something happen, so make something shake. Appreciate y'all.
