I'm gonna try to be the only media. So I'm gonna try to be the only ballgame. That doesn't correct anything pretty good. I'm thinking about trying to do an L crane. I know, I know, I know, but still it's there. It's that broadcast is there ASAP stuff is a copy of the media guys. They don't, so I don't, you know the game, Yeah, the, the, the, the, of the, the play by play franchise, the United States. Yeah. Thank God. Right. No highlights. Four hours. Mhm. That was okay. We're gonna sit you down and we'll introduce you. Bring right up that you love your about it. No. All right. Good afternoon everybody. Um it's been a long time since we've had a press conference like this, which is really cool. Uh you know, we're not having the game last year. Uh everybody associated with the SDCC you holiday. Well, we're so proud to be able to present this game again. Um I do wanna to acknowledge and thank the san Diego Padres. Uh they're terrific partners of ours. You see the field out there. Beautiful. And we look forward to an awesome game on Tuesday night and it's gonna be pretty magical. This has been been years in the making. And uh you know, for me I've been with the ball game now for 31 years and this is the most excited I've ever been about the presentation of our game and we got two terrific football teams will be battling it out tomorrow night from the A. C. C. Number 18. NC state Wolfpack nine and three and from the pac 12 the U. C. L. A. Bruins at eight and four and expect some fireworks I think our new scoreboard and all that is gonna get get a workout tomorrow night. Um So but to get started and we'll have the coaches come up and we'll we'll start with coach Dave Doeren from N. C. State and uh he'll say a few words and then answer some questions and then we'll bring up coach Chip kelly from U. C. L. A. Do the same thing and with that and bring up coach Jordan thank you. No appreciate it. Mark bob. And uh it's been a great week beautiful city, incredible environment in the stadium today. Being able to walk around and and uh seeing the parachuters come in that uh that was pretty awesome for our team. But they've done a phenomenal job getting this stadium ready for a football game. Uh And you know to be in a bowl game that our conference has never played in great experience for our players. I know when when the opportunity came up to play in the holiday bowl I asked the team how many guys have been to san Diego and there's one or two. So just you know that to me is what bowl games are. It's it's life experience for these young men. It's a chance to celebrate all of us is the same. We've been through more with these guys when you talk about all the things socially that happened in our country, you talk about pandemics and covid protocols. It's been a lot. And so this group of young men and the staff ah deserves an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and play football and and have fun in a bowl environment that's special like this. And so very blessed and thankful for the opportunity to look forward to playing a really good football team ship. You've done a great job. It's a fun group of guys to watch on film. Very experienced football team that we're gonna play. It's gonna be a really good football game. You've got a lot of good teams, a lot of good players, good schemes guys that haven't played against each other. So an opportunity that way. I think even conference wise been an N. C. State nine years now and I had one game against the PAC 12 team Arizona state. Um So it's great to be able to cross over this way. Any questions you guys, there's a mic here question, who needs clarification? You speak up so we can get it on facebook live. Okay. No Ben Bolch Los Angeles Times coach kelly and known for elite offense. What do you see that makes their offense so good and so hard to stop and prepare for. Well he's got a lot of experience, you know, these kids have played in his system now for a while and quarterback that's been in it. Obviously for anybody that coaches having an experienced quarterbacks a blessing in itself. And we both have that, you know, when you have guys that have been in your system, they can learn on their experiences, there's growth that takes place. And, and there's a lot of seniors and covid seniors, super seniors, you want to call it on that side of the football and uh, you can see it on film. You know, they don't make a lot of mistakes, they protect the football, they rushed the football. Well, um, that's what you see, they talked about, you know, wanting you guys to enjoy this experience. But what has it been like watching these bowl games get canceled? Have your guys out here wanting to get that experience, but also maybe holding your breath as covid testing goes on? Yeah. You know, I think prevention is the best medicine right now. Our guys have been through this. Um, they understand how to, I guess follow protocols, it's not out of the norm now to ask them, you know, how to do these things to keep their space clean, to wear a mask, to wash their hands, to use, You know, all the different protocols in place. Um, and protect the mission. You know, we're here to try to win our 10th game that's happened one time in school history. So there's a lot at stake, uh, and sort of decisions that we make to try to stay healthy are very important decisions. They're selfless decisions and our guys have embraced just another opportunity to try to beat the odds, you know, and that's kind of what's going on when you watch college football, there's a lot of people that aren't getting that done. And, and so these two teams have done that. How was Philip Rivers impacted your program over the years. Do you see any extra interest in this game from southern Californians due to his connection to the area? We love Phillip, you know, he's spoken to our team a couple times now and uh, maybe one of the greatest competitive guys at that position. When you talk about spirit and uh everything he does talks about his time at NC State, He zoomed in and talk to our team last year during a pandemic. We tried to have different players that played for us in the past come down and talk. Um, and then he came out in person and spoke seven years ago to our guys and I don't know about the southern California connection as far as more people liking to watch us because of that, I don't know. But obviously I think there's great respect for those that liked Philip rivers knowing that he's a, a member of our, our university and somebody that we hold very dear. You mentioned the, the experience for the players, is there a sense also that this is not just a reward for this season, Kind of everything they've been through because they didn't really get a bowl experience last year kind of going in and out. Have you talked with them about that? And do you have that sense for the script? I do you know, I think it's I said this back before the season started, it really wasn't like sometimes you start the year and you know this is a brand new team, you know this team was almost a continuation of last year's team. We didn't lose many parts and so it's really been kind of a two year season with them and you're right, you know, last year's ball game was more like a road game. And so to have this true experience of a bull, I think it's been a great treat for these guys. Coach has been a month since we last time we played and we know how banged up and nicked up everybody was by the end of the year because the table, you know, we're freshmen get some guys back, it's been some time off and they stay sharp over this period. Well we had maybe 30 guys with the flu the week that we played U. n. c. And so we were in a much worse position than than we are with this current situation going on nationally. But yeah, we're in a great spot as far as our health, you know the guys that were out from the year out for the year, Nothing happened there but you know, Devin Boykins back and I would tell you, probably half of our team had the flu during that week, you know, and so they played that game with a lot of guts. So they were, they were fatigued After the game, I think maybe 3/4 of our staff had it, you know, so, I mean, I think I watched our program and so it was great to get everybody kind of healthy and back and we've had a good week. I know that we've talked about this before and with some of the guys, but just about the expand a little bit more on this, you know, getting to attend one season. What this would mean for the program and how it's been driving these guys over the last month since they played. Yeah. You know, I think creating a legacy as a player, as a team, as a, a group of guys like ar 17 signing class wanted to take a picture out there together, you know, just, I think these are things that they will be remembered by, you know, and and for a mecha MSC, for example, whoever wears 86 X has big shoes to fill, you know, and when you talk about your program, we're trying to build a program here that each team that has to come up against what the last team did has to raise the bar another, you know, another notch. And So to get to 10, it's 137 years of football, it's happened one time in school history, it would be a great accomplishment for these young men and for the staff. And obviously anytime you can win a ballgame, if that happens, it helps you in your offseason, you're recruiting your momentum. So for both teams, you know, I mean anytime you get to this point of the year, you want to have that coach, We talked to Grant and Drake a couple weeks ago and there's been so much excitement the last few weeks because of guys who are coming back and people and fans already talking about next year. But the thing is you guys didn't have one more game to play this year, you kind of get togethers sharp and focused on the task at hand. Yeah, it's kind of weird, you know, I don't know how it was for coaches program, but you know, we couldn't sign very many players because we didn't know how many we'd lose, you know, with the super senior thing going on, roster management has became very challenging as head coaches. And so it's a small recruiting class, the signing day, it was like 12 guys, you know, and I've never seen a class that small in my time in a program, but with that then we had all these guys announcing their returning and that became more exciting than signing date in some ways. Um and I think these guys want to win a conference championship. You got some guys that, you know, they see that the NFL draft has 1200 more players in it this year than ever because of the Covid numbers. And, and so their odds if they're not a first or second are not good to come out and that's really what the draft is about. It's about, do I have good odds to make a guaranteed spot on a roster and if I don't, what do I gain by returning to school? And for a lot of our guys, they gained an opportunity to be on a really good team next year. They're excited about that. Okay guys, one more coach, One more question for coach door and then we'll have coach kelly come up. We'll get pictures with them when they're done. Hey coach, did you get a real walk through or did you guys just get to check out the ballpark? We did our practice at Mesa and then came over and just walked around. Yeah, thank you. I appreciate it. Mark was introduced. Mark's been great all week. It's really been an honor to participate in this game. I had an opportunity when I was an assistant at Oregon to come to this and it's just a first class organization and we were excited when we got the opportunity to play in this. Same thing as David talked about. It's really a two year deal. You know, this group of guys that we have here. Um We've been through a lot over the last 18 months and and it's really a reward for um last year and this year so to give our guys one more chance to play. Uh and to be together as a group you know we got to spend thanksgiving together. Um And our goal was to spend christmas together and we got a chance to do that. So um it's a really close team. Um They played extremely hard. There's a brotherhood on our football team uh and they get one more time to to throw on the bruin uniform and go out and represent a great university. So we're excited to be here and I can't wait till the game tomorrow night. Um So we're in San Diego. So I need to ask you about some of the locals on your program. Please speak to the contributions of Kyle phillips, Jordan's, Denmark keith and martell Irby to your football team. Yeah. Three great individuals. Um Kyle phillips is obviously our leading receiver kid from SAn marcos has done an unbelievable job. Came in and played right away as a true freshman and made a huge impact on our program since he got there. Um Jordan is a transfer from Notre dame was an outstanding player there. Um And he was fortunate to come in and be part of our grad program. Um He's gonna get an undergraduate degree from Notre dame and a graduate degree from U. C. L. A. So if you want to buy stock in a human being, I would buy stock in Jordan's because he's going places. And then Martel um, has just been a jack of all trades for us, came in as a running back, played as a true freshman as a running back was a great special teams player for us. Um, and then we had some needs in the secondary and he volunteered to move over there and play. And um, because of the situation with the United will actually be a starter in this game. So we're excited for martel to come back in front of his home crowd and get his first start. So we're excited about that. Just the nuts and bolts question, is there any more testing our results were waiting on or is it the team had to go? I think they will tell you it's an ongoing thing. So if someone comes down with symptoms later on this afternoon, they'll be tested. So we will test kids up until game time. So we, we don't have any final numbers. But what what's going on is our unvaccinated kids obviously get tested earlier in the week. But anybody that has any symptoms will be tested after after they report symptoms. So you can have someone go tomorrow on game day. So we'll just go, we've got our fingers crossed. Um, our whole mindset has always been, if we got 11 we're gonna go play. So Covid Cloud kind of hovered over this bowl just fine. I think that Covid cloud has hovered over America. So um you know part of playing in this ballgame um is to make sure we can play the ball game. So we we've talked to our players a lot about protecting the ecosystem. Um We're proud of. The fact is that we played every single one of our games a year ago. Uh And the credit goes to our players. You know they have to make a lot of sacrifices and you've got to really be a selfless person um to accomplish all those things. And then obviously we had incidents on our campus. You know our basketball team has had games canceled. Our women's team has had games canceled. So our players have been doing it the best job they can um with it and we know how especially this new variant is. Um they've been great with it. But again going up until kickoff tomorrow night we still got our fingers crossed that that will have everybody chip. We've talked a lot about Dorian over the years. But just from the first time you saw him at a U. C. L. A. Practice to where he's at now. You can just talk about his growth and what you've seen from Dorian over time. Yeah I mean just to watch him over the last four years has been special. He's obviously has got some unique qualities that just make him a special player but just his growth as a as a person as is the cool part. He really is a true leader of our team. Um And and our players really truly understand that but it's it's it's not it's something that he earned through time. You know when they when they watch how hard he works and and the time he puts in and then the toughness that he displays when he plays and how he plays. Um It's been really cool and and to see what you know when you talk to him about what his goals are this this season and his goal was he wanted to be a better a better servant leader. You know and that that's his words not mine. And when the kid says that to you it's like this kid's got it you know in in this day and age and I think people are all concerned with name image likeness all the other different things that are going on around him and when when a kid tells you that he wants to be a better servant leader and that's his goal. Um You know that he gets it and and it's been really fun to watch him mature and you know we were blessed to have him on our team when you look at the defense and N. C. State has I think clearly it's one of the better ones you've gone up against all season. What makes them so effective defensively. I think they're extremely well coached and they they've got obviously a unique scheme that you don't see every day. Um But they seem like they have the answers to the test before the test is given. So um it's a challenge when you face a team like this they've they've got a bunch of veteran guys on the on that coaching staff that have probably seen every being thrown at them and what people try to do to attack that defense and I think they have the answers for it. So our guys know that we don't see that defense very much Hawaii ran a version of it. Um but not like these guys. So we've seen a little bit of the 33 stacked. But um it's gonna be a challenge for us. And they also have some players that are that are really really good football players. So drake thomas is as good a linebackers will face tanner Ingle at safety is as good as safety as well face all year long. So um you know not only they're really well coached, they got really good personnel. So um it's a challenge that our guys are excited about. Hey Chip talk about N. C. State has one of the best offensive lineman in the country. Talk about him did he did he leave early? You know wishful thinking maybe opt outs are a thing that goes on during ballgames. I'm not I'm not suggesting somebody should but I would have made our christmas little better talk about him in comparison to some of the other offensive linemen you faced in the in the conference. Yeah he just he's so athletic you know and then that's the one thing that um when you see you see him you know it's you know to see a guy that big move that will he's got great band, he's got great skill and strength. He's really technical does a great job with his hands. Um You know our our guys know that it's gonna be a challenge but it's you know those are the ones that you remember when you had a chance to go up against first round draft pick. Um you know no one talks about you know when you when you went against a kid that that mhm never played after his collegiate career but when you get a chance to go up against first round draft pick that's when you're gonna remember. So our guys are excited about the challenge. This is a pretty big game on national tv um really good opponent. What would what a win in this game mean for the U. C. L. A. Football program? It's the same as every week. Ben games bigger than this. I think this is our super bowl. So we can say it's our holiday bowl and we're excited. This is this is the next opportunity for this team to play and um, we're, we don't worry about making statements. We don't talk about what the impact of the Windows or an impact of this does. It's, it's an opportunity for this group to play one last game together and, and they truly love each other and it's a brotherhood and they're excited about that opportunity. So one more question for coach kelly, then we'll get a picture with them behind the trophy and then we'll be done. One more question. Coach kelly, You guys are good. Okay. Thank you very much. All right. We'll get anybody photo right here from Coach kelly North. Thank you. Okay, That's Roddy. Thank you. Good. Good, good, Good, Good. Moving home, what do you want to help? Thank you very much. Okay, Everybody got it. one more. Two more. All right. Thank you very much. Thanks everybody coming. Thank you. Coaches appreciate it. Okay, right, so if anybody wants to go up the work upstairs in the press box, well, wait for me to kind of sort out a little bit and then you can, you can all follow
