Chris Lea and Pat Welter join Kacy Hintz from Bank of America Stadium to break down the many positives and few negatives Cam Newton brought to the Panthers in his Charlotte homecoming game versus Washington.
well, let's continue to break down that Carolina panthers, 27 21 loss to the Washington football team and to help me do that. We're gonna send it back out to charlotte today. I've got both of the guys with me Chrisley, Pat Welter, thanks so much for joining me. Of course. We gotta jump right in and talk about the man of the hour cam. Newton making his return today and he looked pretty good. 21 of 2789 yards, two touchdowns and no picks chris, we'll start with you. What do you think of his performance? I think today we have to call you case boogie since you're dressed like cam Newton, you know, call him a facebook as well. But I didn't really have a lot of big expectations for cam before this game, but he came in and for somebody who's just signed to his team 11 days ago. Keep that in mind. I think he ran the offense pretty well now. Of course, he didn't know some of the tempo situations, some of the two minute situations, but that will come over time. The Carolina panthers did not lose because of their quarterback today. You can't say that for the last five losses they've had this season. The quarterback played very well. I think cam Newton gets an A on this performance. Look, when the panthers released cam. Newton, it wasn't because he couldn't play chris because he was hurt. That was the problem right now. He's healthy. He's on that vegan diet. You gotta turn me onto that. Maybe there's something to it right now because he looks healthy out there. He looks spry, He looks lean, I mean, how about that 24 yard touchdown run? Maybe the run to midfield was just as impressive as the run itself. But I think we're the limitations showed themselves today. Chris was on the key moments. The third downs, the two minute drill at the end. That rule talks about, you know, maybe pulling them out to put P. J. Walker in there. Maybe they should have. But I think probably ultimately going with the guy that got you there, the right decision for this game going forward. And those are things that I think the team can approve on as they go here. Like you said, he's only been here two weeks. Oh boy. Last thing I need is for this whole sports department to be going vegan. Okay, well both of you guys agree this wasn't on cam then whose fault was this loss or who's this loss fall on today? Okay. See complementary football has been so important for the Carolina panthers this entire season and that just wasn't there for them today. That can made a lot of great plays, a lot of big plays. The offense was efficient in a lot of ways. But then in that third quarter chris, they only had one possession, The defense just couldn't get off the field. There was penalties, there was, you know, third down defense, third down offense and that really hurt them today. Third down has been a huge thing and a huge point of emphasis for the Carolina panthers defense this season last year. They were horrible. They couldn't get off the field this year. They've been a lot better with it. So of course defense let them down today because they really couldn't get off the field today. But we have to give the nod to Ron Rivera though. I mean, you know, still matt rules only in the second year ever in the N. F. L. Ron Rivera played in the NFL, he coached in the NFL before he got a head coaching job here in Carolina in 2011 he knows what to do and he's familiar with this stadium and he knows this is cam Newton's homecoming. And so the game plan coming into this, hold the ball, run the ball very well and keep the fans out of it. They did that. And the Washington football team had the ball for over 35 minutes. That was the perfect game plan and the defense didn't respond the way they needed to. And I think that was just the perfect recipe for Washington football team win. Okay guys, make this one quick. We've seen him now, two games last week, just eight snaps, but this week we have a full game to take a look at, was this the best decision for the panthers to bring him back. Yeah, it certainly looks like a home run right now, right. I mean, I think chris you know when you love somebody, sometimes you gotta let him let him go, right? That's what they're saying is they rebounded toys with Bridgewater Sam Donald now that realized how good they had it. Sure it's just one game. But he showed a lot. I think it's something to build on and down the stretch. We'll find out. Maybe if it's something to build on beyond this year as well. Just really quick cam. Newton accounted for five touchdowns within the last two weeks. The three weeks prior to that, the Carolina panthers had one touchdown. So that lets you know everything you need to know about that. Alright, you guys thank you so much. We'll see what he can do from here on the road next week at Miami Chrisley Pat walter. Thank you
