Ovies & Giglio: ACC commish has limited options to close revenue gap
Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio are at #ACCKickoff and had some questions for commissioner Jim Phillips. The OG reacted to what he had to say and the future of the ACC.
the O. G alongside joe Giulio. I'm Jovi is, we're at a CC kickoff in charlotte's time to bring back low rent sports talk theater, joe bring it back. Let's do this. It's not the Raleigh times, but it'll do James is 17 now too. So I won't have anybody running up to the table telling us they got a P. Yeah, that's a good point. That's a good point. So let's hope not. Anyway. I'd be shocked if my kids are here, your kids are here. I'll just say like, wait a minute, shouldn't be a band camp, what's going on? So a sec. Commissioner, Jim phillips had a lot to cover today because as we know, thanks to the news cycle, there's a variety of issues that are chipping away at what people believe to be a strong A CC conference and you and I kind of came away with the same thought, I'll put it in movie terms. The A. C. C. Is trying to position itself as the last honorable sheriff in a corrupt western town. And I've seen these movies play out, you can try to win, win your way out of this by being reputable and honorable and sticking to the cause and believing a believer in the mission. But typically the bad guys are gonna win out in these cases and you're gonna have a hero's death. And that's, that was my takeaway from today's press conference where they're really committed to the bit, they are committed to what the college experience used to be and trying to hold on to it While the sec and the big 10 are moving on and talking pure uncut business with football. Yeah I believe Jim Phillips and his sincerity in the mission and the opportunities for athletes I really do and I believe that he cares about sports other than football and men's basketball. I have no doubt to take him for his word. But he's not only antiquated and old fashioned he's costing the A. C. C. At this point unless he has something else behind the scenes that he's working on or has cooked up. But he mentioned something very important near the end of his press conference today and that was we're not going to make a move for the sake of making a move and financially it has to make sense. And I got news for everyone out there. Clamoring for Oregon Washington stanford and cal that will not financially move the needle and save the A. C. C. One of the things he talked about that is a way home is the expanded college football playoff and I believe that he needs to concentrate his efforts on that. I believe he needs to as he pointed out the strength of the grant of rights I think he needs to make sure everyone Miami Clemson north Carolina. You've got to make sure all of those schools are happy that the revenue, unequal revenue concept I believe needs to be explored even further as well. I don't like that. I know you don't I don't like unequal revenue and it wasn't really brought up a lot today and I'm glad it wasn't because I'm, I'm of the belief that the unequal revenue business is coming from the football minded schools who are using money as a mask to cover their own mistakes and poor choices that they've made over time. I'm telling you right now, unequal revenue is a path to breaking up the A. C. C. It's only going to create more division with what we already got going on right now and I actually think it would accelerate the break up of the A. C. I don't think you have a united front right now in the A. C. C. And I think that's one of the things that hasn't been talked about and just to correct you slightly on this north Carolina is very vocal in what they've done across the board to help the league in basketball and also football wise with Mack Brown raising the viability and visibility of that program. While it has not translated necessarily on the field, it's still added another brand to the A. C. C. So I think it's not just pure football lines, Duke, I'm sure we'll have a say in that as well. I think that's one of the paths, but the idea which jim phillips kinda fronted today of, hey, we're gonna die on the morality hill as the last pure bastion of the amateur model. It's just a really bad idea and my, and I would add to that. I mean, jim phillips is just publicly saying what presidents want by the way, he's not the one who's got all these ideas. He is, he was hired because of these values, he was hired because of the, the way he views the collegiate model and being a true believer at all. So really don't blame jim phillips for the way he talked today, blame the people who are making decisions behind the scenes that you never see the college presidents and the A. D. S. That is and I agree with you behind the scenes, a little bit, a little bit more fractured than they want to let on, which gets us to the revenue aspect again and all opportunities are on the table, unequal revenue sharing might be one of those things that's all on the table. I asked jim phillips after the press conference directly in that, how much can you tell me, contract wise, that would trigger a true renegotiation with the ESPN contract that runs through 2036 bringing up the Raycom deal for those who don't know Raycom still on the books That's supposed to come off and I think 2026, yes, it's going to be the end of the 26, year. It essentially will act as a cost of living increase in the grand scheme of things. A little beer money, that's about three million per school, a little beer money. So that, that's obviously on the table. Maybe they can accelerate that, that decoupling of Raycom but everything that they have on the table really isn't gonna do much to do what you describe that jim phillips directly as getting lapped by the big 10 and the sec and there's really nothing in the contract that's going to trigger a real new deal unless they add Notre dame, which gets back to what we've been talking about for a long time, adding Oregon ain't gonna do that, adding Oregon Oregon state Washington Arizona Arizona state is just more mouths to feed and there's history with this, there's always president with this ESPN already did this with the big 12 when they added schools, they essentially just gave them the amount of money that kept everybody on equal footing. Nobody really got extra money out of that. And that also gets us to the grant of rights as well and why we can sit here and speculate all day. But ultimately we're gonna have to sit still for about five years, about 5 to 10 years is what I would estimate because I asked phillips about that earlier after the press conference and then I feel like getting access. It wasn't really your uncoupled. It was, it was let's get rid of the troublemaker and no, no, no, no, no it's okay to be the good cop. No, it wasn't, it was being good cop is that I have questions that sometimes you have to be the good cop. I'm the good cop a lot. So my point is during the scrubbing, you'll ever know there was a scrub after the fact if you hang around you can ask a couple questions. Things like that. So I wanted to ask him about that contract trigger. But then here, here's where I admit I was the good cop. Alright. Here's where I was a good cop. I said, hey, I expect fans not to know what the grant of rights is and just speculate all day and I can go on the radio and talk to fans and tweet about it and give an understanding. But I get the sense that you have to have conversations with boards of trustees members at various institutions who don't know how the grant of rights works and they're not helping you with speculation because they think they can just get out of it. And phillips looks at me and he just, I thought he didn't understand the question or like, okay, you respond now. He just goes and gives us a sly grin. He goes, have you been on the conference calls? I almost made a joke. I was invited. I was just a joke because true story. We were included on one of these was the headquarters. We were included on one of these zoom calls to talk about relocation. But no, we weren't on that conference. But he, but that's the thing. And if you have any takeaway from this portion of the conversation, it's to understand the grant of rights is pretty locked in. It is financially catastrophic right now for an individual school to go. But that's not to say. And we've talked to lawyers about this and also people within the industry, there's power in numbers, power in numbers. And unless there's a block of schools that's willing to say screw this, we're going to be in this position for the A. C. C. Over about the next five years. So I think everybody can chill and then watch with delight how the pac 12, the Big 12 and all those remaining schools try to squeeze out as much money as they can with their next television deal. And there's another aspect with Notre dame to and their contract coming up and they're looking for shoulder programming. There might be a way where Notre dame in the A. C. C. Go to NBC for some sort of revenue share that gets, hey look, we honor jim phillips said we honor your independence. So if that's the case, you can keep your independent money. But if you knock something out with NBC for shoulder programming, well then we can get some extra money to and to be clear the A. C. C. Wants to avoid the doomsday scenario. Yes. Notre dame re upping with either NBC or even C. B. C. B. S who will does not have sec programming anymore is the first step to avoiding the doomsday scenario of Notre dame potentially joining the Big 10 conference. Now, Notre Dame has signed the grant of rights, but Notre Dame is in the unique position of it could challenge the grant of rights and provide a map a blueprint for the other schools. That's what the A. C. C. Wants to avoid. So to be clear, while it would be the status quo in terms of Notre dame not joining the A. C. C. It's still a good thing for the A. C. C. Anyway, uh that's gonna wrap it up for this portion of the conversation. Check out the show. The actual radio show we're talking to Devin leary, we're gonna talk to Devin. Leary. Sam harmon from Wake Forest, Dave Doeren drake thomas and who knows who else might drop by on WRL sports Plus, because Sam Hartman is a damn handsome man. I'm not.
