Former UNC quarterback Drake Maye speaks with the media after throwing for NFL scouts at his Pro Day on Thursday.
What's going guys sort of a long journey to hear how you think you did. Yeah, I thought, you know, I thought I do it well, you know, I thought I was spinning it great. Um You know, a few which I had back always, you know, we have 70 throws, you're gonna miss a few. Um That was the goal to be perfect. I didn't come that but I feel like I do it. Well, I think the guys did a great job and uh just trying to show different things moving on the run, uh different drops and uh just throwing it with it like when, when you have a, do you think that you and your Yeah, just competitive man. I think, you know, one time you miss something. Um shoot just, just being mad, not mad but just frustrated. Hey, made that throw a million times. I want to get it back and uh show them that, hey, you miss one thing you want to get corrected. I think that's what I wanted to show and also be able to, you know, bounce back from missus. Um You know, I think I missed a few that I thought was pretty easy, you know, usually mad at myself, but I wanna hit that back and, and get it going. How would you describe your conversations with the Patriots as you, as you start to get to know them more throughout? Yeah, they've been great. Um, you know, coach Mayo, obviously, you know, first year head coach, you know, congrats to him, um, just in there, you know, talking with, you know, new office coordinator, you know, with coach Van Pelt and just, uh, learn their stuff and, uh, I think it's just been, been awesome, uh, for such a, you know, historic, you know, program and team in history up there in, in New England. Uh, so just getting a chance to, um, kind of get to know them, get to know what they're about and kind of their champion mindset of getting back to the glory days has, uh, been cool commanders. Yeah, it was good. Um, yeah, and there with, you know, with Mr Peters and, uh, you know, coach Quinn, uh, obviously just, you know, great dudes, um, great people and, uh, you know, excited to, you know, see what's in store. Um, I think they, they got a great thing going up there. So, uh, you know, really close, pretty close to home and, uh, you know, being commanders is another, another historic, you know, kind of ball club. Um, they've had some good years and, uh, look forward to getting, um, they got a chance to get back at that. So, yeah. Yeah, a little bit nervous but I think, you know, really just excited to kind of get out there and let it rip, I think, kind of the first time getting to show some things in front of these, um, these teams. I haven't done anything, didn't do anything in the combine, so I wanted to come out here and rip it around and, uh, you know, I feel like I did that just trying to throw it and, uh I missed a few high but, uh at the end of the day, I feel like I was doing a good seem to be an emphasis on moving the pocket and, you know, yeah, that's where I'm best. I think I'm, you know, I don't just stand back there like I'm statue and letting their rip. I think there's time and places for that. But also, you know, stuff I can show on the move, you know, I got a good mobility. I'm a big dude that can move and I want to show off that I can make a lot of different throws. Yeah. Who was it, Miss Richards up there was Miss Richards. Yeah, Miss Richards the best. Um Yeah, she's been, um you know, one of the best supporters, uh just people, you know, it means a lot for, you know, people from the hometown and uh from back home. Um we got a bunch of family in here. Uh So we just coming to support, um you know, just do it for the city, you know, back in, you know, I grew up right outside of Charlotte. So that place uh means a lot to me. And uh this place right here, Chapel Hill means a lot. So just a North Carolina kid through and through and excited to get a chance one more and one more time this indoor to, to, to show what I'm about, Drake right after you finish, Josh, came up to you. Obviously, you guys have a long history. And what did he give you? And, and how is it that he's in the, he's, yeah. Oh, it's awesome. You know, back in the day where, where Josh was playing on, uh, playing on Sundays and Friday night, we had a high school game. He'd come back and come back for our game is pretty cool story. And, uh, now it's kind of full circle out here together. Um, you know, coach mccallen has been awesome. He's always so positive. He never says anything negative. I think that's the best thing about him. Um, you know, he'll coach you up though, I'll coach you up. But, uh, he's excited for me, um, kind of don't know each other since, you know, for a long time now and, you know, really he pulled up, um, you know, some throws and, you know, some, just some, some football stuff. He's always talking always talking ball and talking competitive. So it's nice. What's the best? I love this journey. Uh You know, Jaden's, um kind of got to know him well, he's a, you know, he's a great player and had a great season this past year. Um But, you know, really, um they always kind of compare uh where you go, but I'm so excited to see wherever I go and uh kind of let the, let the guy handle the rest, Drake just out of curiosity, any feedback on his entire pro day experience you got from your friend Sam Howell. Uh Yes, Sam said, enjoy it, man. Let it rip. Um Sam is one of my best friends. Um So I, I think he was made in attendance today. I'm not sure but, uh you know, Sam is, is awesome. He's so good. He's so positive, supportive. Um He just said, hey, you're gonna miss a few. I miss a few of your mind. Just let it rip. That was a nice one to be, to be able to play in the NFL with. Oh, that'd be awesome. Ted is a heck of a player. I think y'all saw the Speed on showcase today. He's huffing and puffing back there in the huddle and going out there, you know, still running 43. So, uh he's got a bright future. Um try to get a year with him, which I had longer, but uh it's been awesome. You spend a lot of time with your family. What, what did your dad say before you came here? Yeah, just have fun. I think, uh he just said, hey, you know, treat it like a, you know, not, not like a game you also on air, you know, don't, don't take it with too much, um, you know, too much, you know, nerves to come into it, just let it rip. Uh I think my dad's been awesome, so supportive. Um He just said to um just be on the same page with the guys and have fun. The default was pretty prevalent today. You were able to connect on that. Uh You really want to show off the arm strength. Yeah, I think I can, you know, throw it deep with the best of them. So I just wanted to show that um I think, you know, every deep ball I think was completed. So that was the goal. Um Some of the intermediate ones I wish I had back but uh that happens. Um but yeah, definitely come out here and uh letting it rip deep was uh definitely emphasis. How do you describe your approach of avoiding sort of that predraft buzz with where you're gonna go? Um Just, just saying on social media, I think that's the biggest thing. Um You know, don't go and looking up yourself and all the stupid stuff people do uh just stay off and um kind of have that inner circle close to you and get your mind off of football. You know, it's not all about, um, you know, coming out here and where you're gonna go in the draft. I just have fun with it, um, in a special place. Um, I feel, you know, have a chance of getting drafted and just embrace it and enjoy it. No, I don't think you're tempted. I think you learn enough, you know, soon into your college career when you're getting hate D MS and all that stuff and not look on social media. So it's kind of a different world now. Yeah, I think Lord's got it. I think it's, you know, a big thing, you know, faith is, is a, is a big for me. So, uh you know, I think you can always get down a dark deep hole, you know, worrying about all the scenarios that can happen. Um So just let him handle it and uh you know, I'm just, just focus on my craft and uh just kind of whoever chooses me. I think they're gonna be happy and uh just from there work from there. Yeah, I think I have some 30 visits. I have some private workouts where I'll throw again and uh just excited to um kind of get ready. I'm gonna head to Detroit for the draft, so I'm excited for that and I had the whole family up there, have the whole crew. Um A bunch of 667, all my brothers. Um, a bunch of big dudes in there in the, in the green room. So excited for that and just enjoying it. Yeah. Yeah, I'd be pretty special. I'm not a hat guy, so I'm more worried about putting on the hat. But uh other than that, I think just excited during these interviews. Has there been questions you've got more than others? And what is your questions? I got more than others. Uh Yeah, nothing off the top of my head. Um Just kind of a, you know, what's, what's, what are you about? I think it is the biggest thing and what do you bring to the table? Um So just, you know, hard, hard, hard worker um that, uh you know, loves to compete um called I'm a winner and uh just ready to go wherever, I think a lot of people say, hey, do you wanna go here here? I'm ready to go wherever I feel like I can um you know, add a lot to a team intrigued with those questions. Have you gotten any that are unexpected or off the wall that you're surprised by? Uh No, not really. I'm surprised by a lot of it. Um You know, it's hard to stay humble in some of the conversations because they ask, you know, kind of really boast about yourself and, uh you know, kind of growing up my parents, they taught us, you know, it's, it's tough to do that kind of boast about yourself. So just try to do the best I can. You top 30 visits, workouts. Do you have any of those? Yeah, I'm not sure yet. Um, I'm sure I'll have, I'll have, uh, you know, a bunch of the teams come to, so, um, I'm not gonna release too much information out there, y'all good. Yeah. Um, shoot JJ and Bryson, man, they're 222 of the best players I've played with, man JJ. Um he's kind of getting into the media realm. Um, he's trying to interview me right now. Um he's, he's doing a great job. Um, he kind of looks apart and uh Bryson is just a snack back there. So, uh it's been a pleasure, appreciate you all and uh have a good one.
