Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta detailed what protective gear he uses including a neck protector and throat guard. He has used the protection for 15 years, but in the wake of the recent tragedy he thinks it's a good time for guys to just try it out
So, yeah, this is pretty much, you know, obviously high shots making sure that you don't get that many shots, but obviously it's hopefully keeps you in, in a, in a safe spot also, if the, the skates go higher and, and like that. But yeah, I've been, I think I've been using it for at least 15 years. It takes a little time to get used to it and, and the noise and everything else. But when you get used to it, you, you're not going back without it anymore. I, I think there's early in the season where you, where you get a new mask and you want to put it on and you go in and you don't have that thing in the mask. You, you feel so, so open from the neck. So, uh, yeah, I I'm probably gonna keep using that until, until I'm done. But yeah, obviously there's, you know, some guys don't want to have their ear lobes in their helmets and, and some goalies doesn't want that. So it's just a preference. But, you know, I think that will keep my neck neck safe and especially high shots. And hopefully if the skates or anything else is coming high. Sometimes I even even use like the higher, higher shirt here. So, but I think the neck guard is, is pretty good there and, and, you know, it doesn't feel like you're, you're choking or anything. So, I think it's just, you know, finding the right one and, and getting used to it. I think that's, that's the biggest thing and, but, you know, everyone has their own preferences. So, uh, it's not that easy to change it but I think now when you hear the news and, and you see that, uh, everyone is talking about it, I think it's just, you know, it doesn't cost anything to try something.
