Rhule: 'My job is not to pick the starting quarterback'
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule updates the media on where the team stands heading into training camp, which begins this week. The Panthers are coming off a 5-12 season and made waves by adding quarterback Baker Mayfield to the roster.
848, 48. I mean, good to see everybody. Good to have so many people here. Good to have our players here. So excited to get started. So see what you guys got the quarterbacks about how you're going to divide up reps. I haven't had that. Yeah, they're they're reporting their own stuff. So we'll meet this evening. So I know, I know it's killing you guys. I apologize, but we'll meet with those guys. What goes into, what are you considering when you're looking? Yes, just the best plan to give everybody a chance to um, learn what they're doing, showcase what they're doing and making sure guys, you know, we install some plays, making sure everyone has a chance to run as many as possible, give them situations so more near, uh, you know, he's been very clear with me that that's not his approach, you know, um, I want everyone, I want us to be a competitive team and I talk about competition all the time. You gotta fight for what you want. You know, I I again, my job is not to pick the starting quarterback. You know, I have to make that decision, but it's the guys play. So, you know, Russell Wilson walked into a situation in Seattle with, you know, Matt Flynn, who had just had a guaranteed contract and charlie whitehorse, they just traded for and he won the job. Um, so I want competition, The best players play. Do you? I have a 12 30 medical meeting to see I had, I've had no major bells raised yet. Then we have, you know, our conditioning test, which sometimes will eliminate that? Well then add to that? So as of right now shock being the only one. And, but you know, we'll know more probably this evening I will be ready for the first game we believe. So you'll be smart with him. He's played a lot of football, you know, he'll, but he'll come back, He'll practice. You know, we'll try to bang the rust off of them. But you know, we're kind of taking it week by week quarterback situation. When, when do you want peace starting place or is it just, I'd love to have it before the Cleveland game, You know, uh huh, you know, I think anytime you put timelines on things, you end up rushing to make bad decisions. Um, to me, this is about very much being in the moment but not making rash judgments, Some guy's gonna have good days and bad days, you know, um, you know, we, we will have our 53 cut, you know, whenever we know we know we can play games with it. You know, when we kind of know, hey, this is our guy, we'll, we'll do it. But, you know, most teams, the NFL start to quarterbacks about the course of the year. So to me it's our job to not just, you know, pick a starting quarterback, it's to make sure that we have four guys that can go in and win for us? So has been your third year, Is there something you want to see? First day, first week of practice? Yeah, but maybe see in your first, I think, I think the biggest thing for me is is just our players driving our, you know, our standard of performance, you know, our standard of execution and effort are note taking all those things. Everyone knows what's expected, the vibe that I've gotten, the text messages I've gotten from guys last week as guys are excited to be here and guys were showing up last night, you know, guys were coming in early. So, um, I want that excitement to lead into our players saying, hey, you know, this is how we do things, not, this is how coach Ruel said he wants it done or fill no, this is how we do things. And I think we is a very powerful statement and um, you know, we have a lot of we right now, so you know, older guys will lead the young guys in every way that they can, they don't video sign. Yeah, we, we, we, you know, we, the DB assigned to me was like a step in the process, you know, kind of like, hey, um, you know, if you, if you're not gonna do it, you're gonna run over there and hit it to kind of be quite honest, followed with coach Belichick and some of those guys did coach flores, like they had it and the next year they kind of transitioned away from it. In fact we jumped offsides one time in the spring and shock and Frankie started screaming for the guy on offense, he had to go run to the D. V. O sign and I was like, hey, it's not there anymore. Um you know, to me now we have so much competition that the punishment now is just kind of coming jump offsides, you just kind of come out and someone else takes that rep and um you know, you can only do that when you have a pretty talented roster, a lot of competition. We have a ton of competition. I know everyone's gonna focus on one of them, but there's a lot of competition and so, but to answer your question, there's a lot of things I'm gonna do differently because we're in year three, you know, as a coach, the first two years, you kinda setting the foundation setting now kind of on the same page. One thing I think we do a great job of is we have a lot of fun at camp and you know, we do a lot of, we do a lot of things to entertain, you know, entertain guys and so we'll continue to do that, continue to work hard, but there will be a lot of different approaches competitiveness and it's almost like a spillover from the quarterback areas you sense. I mean, can that energy change the way other guys approach there, You know, I just think that every guy on our team is competing, uh now you might not be competing for your job, you might be the, we all know, you're the starter, right? Taylor martin is the starting right tackle, you know, but he's also though competing against all the great rushers he's gonna face all year long. I mean, you have to have a better camp than them. So, uh that that spirit of competition, that was a focus for us in the spring. I think you guys all saw us and with the, you know, kind of the panther games as a fun way to do that. Um our guys, this team, they love to compete. If I say, hey, let's go run forties. They look at me like I'm nuts. I say, let's see who the fastest guy is and they run forever. So they're competitively spirited. Um I do think that having a competition at the top at quarterback, I think the feedback I've gotten from the players is it will, it will bring out the best in everyone. Um I just think that every player on our team doesn't need to worry about that competition, They all have to worry about their own competition for their role for their spot, but also for their standard of play when the season comes man, we know, Shaq Thompson is here. I'm starting the list. How does the team replace everything? Check brings to press. Yeah. You know, I think, I think a couple of things. No one, I think this is a tremendous time for shock. Um you know, when you're sitting in meetings and you're not evaluating your own performance, you know, you're hearing all the coaching points, you're sometimes mentoring the young guys. Your mastery of the defense takes a step forward. I think it's a great chance for shock too because he's loved by his teammates so he can say things and guys don't take it personally. I think it's a good chance for him to step back and watch practice, watch meetings and reinforce standards. You know, really elevate himself as a leader even more. And um, you know, he's someone, I think he and I like I told him, I said, hey, I'm gonna consider you kind of like an assistant coach during this process and um, you know, we're gonna visit, we're gonna talk, we're gonna do those things. So I think this could be really good for him. You know, he's played, he played really good football last year, like when you want shock, especially when he's healthy. I thought he would play Pro Bowl caliber football, but he affected games and made plays and uh this, you know, it's unfortunate that, you know, he's missing some time. I can't wait to see him come back healthy and be able to play, you know, be able to play a lot longer at the standard he's capable of, I think it's just wear and tear over time. I think it's just kind of a vestige of being an older player and going in there and just cleaning some things out and fixing them up personality to making you feel comfortable, bring in a paper in to compete. Cleveland brought into Sean and baker quarterback might ask for a trade heard does his personality help make? Yeah, I, I think I said it yesterday. I mean, I think Sam's uh, Sam's just a tremendous person. Like he's just the way he handled this in terms of the approach he took was team first. Um, and I think, you know, at the end of the day, Sam has taken a very stoic approach of, I'm going to control what I can control and I can't control anything else other than this. So I mean he's such a good person, I don't worry about anything like that. Um, you know, at the end of the day, he's got a chance to go out there and compete and I think that's all he wants and so, um, I expect him to have a really good camp. No. Great, Right? Yeah, I think, um, I think, um, as we've said, you know, we're going to do maybe a couple of things different in training camp, but I think our training camps with christian have been right. I mean, I think he's entered this season and been really healthy and productive early, so, you know, but he is a year older. So I think as players get older, we're gonna, you know, they get a little bit more breaking time and all those things so we might give him some time here and there in terms of, in this season, I think we've, you know, said, hey, we're gonna try a couple different things to, you know, which, which I'm not going to talk specifically about now, but at the end of the day, he's a great player and so great players want to be on the field and they want to affect the game and so, um, you know, I'm not spending my time worrying about, hey, will christian get hurt. You know, running backs get banged up in this league a lot when he does get banged up. If he, if he does. Um, I want to make sure we get him back as fast as possible. So we're trying to have as good a plan for him as we can have. But I also want him to be great and go out and affect the game. And I think christian Mccaffrey, you know where he's at, where he was this spring, where he's at. I mean, I'm just so excited to see what he could do morning, the leader of no, you and the belief. All right, want to hang out. Yeah, I mean, I think, I think we have such a good locker room. Um, you know, um, like I walk in the facility the day, I see, you know, corral in there with Rambo. I mean, I think those guys did that throwing session, you know Ben said, you know, Sam came in with mood terrorists marshall, I mean we don't have a bad guy, you know, we have a bunch of good guys and so um, I wouldn't read too much into anything of who's with who. I just think we have a bunch of guys that like each other and looking forward to coming to this camp. And I like I said, I think there's been real excitement and anticipation about getting here. You know, not that you have, is the plane ready to still keep guard going into this or is he going to lock, brady's gonna play left tackle and left guard and well we'll have kind of a good battle over there, both those positions and like I said, you guys, I feel like brady is one of our better football players. So it's just, you know, kind of, We got this two week training camp at Wofford. I really appreciate Wofford really appreciate the people of Spartanburg. We went out to dinner last night and um people, you know, waitress was talking about how excited she was to have us here. So I really appreciate being here. Um, but during those two weeks, you know, we're not gonna decide the whole team or anything like that, but this will be a little bit of a grind and, and we'll kind of reevaluate after these two weeks and say, okay, where are we? Might make some changes here and there, but right now put our heads down and I think brady, you know, he'll play both and you know, see where he's most comfortable and see where the best combinations. Jordan's, yeah, you know, probably more center than anything else. But he'll play some guard, two bows, can play some guard too. So we'll we'll move guys around because it's a long season christian. Your report? Yeah. So everyone, we were expecting a report reported. I'll let scott talk about, you know, anything roster wise later. Um, but Xavier is here. Yeah, so excited. I'm just curious. That's all christians he called it.
