Duke
Scheyer: 'To me (Duke vs. UNC) is the best rivalry in sport, no question about it'
Duke coach Jon Scheyer addresses the media before his first game versus UNC as a head coach.
Yeah, alright, there we go. There he goes. They beat us a couple of years ago too. But, but thanks for coming. I'll go right into questions when you found out the summer when you did, you're eventually gonna get this job weeks or moments that you thought about. Yeah, I mean, it's, to be honest with, you know, just because it's, you can't skip steps and you know, as a young kid, I've watched this game and you know, to me it is the best rivalry in sport. No question about it and have a lot of respect for Carolina, but uh, not really until this moment preparing for him and uh, obviously excited and just like I've been for every other game. And uh, so it's not like it's, this was one circle there checked off or anything, it has to be just game by game. If memory serves me right the from a team standpoint, your career against these guys didn't get off to a great start, but finished pretty well. What do you remember about playing in this game and any specific memories that stand out? Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of memories that stand out. You know, we've had some battles with these guys through the years dating back to my freshman year and you know, they had some incredible teams during my years and just like they have ever since and vice versa with us. Um, you know, anytime you get a chance to play your last home game, you know, in Cameron, you know, whoever it's against, it happened to be against those guys that you want to finish up with a win. And so the fact we're able to do that as a special memory, and I just remember my first game here was actually at home and 26 20 said, you know what, 27 sounds better. Let's go 27 but 2026 you know, just, you, those are games you dream about playing in, you know, the bigger it is, the, you know, the, the better it is. Yeah, No question. It's it's it's a different feeling of course, but it's uh, you know, it's uh special when Cameron is rocking and, you know, to be honest with you, our crowds have been incredible. I mean, just the support that we've had and the student support has been amazing. And so each game has been like that, but when, when cameras going and, you know, it's saturday afternoon or saturday evening, it's a, it's a pretty special place to be. Yeah, to be honest with you, you move on and it's, it's such a different team, different circumstances for us, obviously for them, they have, you know, a lot of returning players and, you know, hubert was a coach last year, but you know, we haven't won't talk about with our team, it's not going to be about that, it's about where we are right now, where they are and winning this game for saturday. So you take any experience you've had in the past, you learn from it of course. But uh, but it's not about putting that aside or, you know, trying to think of, how do we use that as motivation? It's about right now where we are. And that's what I'm gonna focus on with our team experiences, experiences playing Carolina game as a player, help to know what you're in for Sure. I mean, it's, I think it's, I don't know the exact number, uh, doing the math briefly the other day. I think it's around 30 games, you know, or give or take in this in this rivalry is a player as an assistant coach. And you know, you really have to keep the main thing, the main thing. And that's what your job is for the game. Uh, you know, focus on, you know, it's gonna be there a really good team. So you have to focus on your making winning plays, whether it's rebounding or taking care of the ball, whatever it may be and uh, not get into anything bigger as far as distractions go or as far as, you know, anything else. So I think that's the biggest thing, john Duke is rebounded pretty well this year. And that's obviously in one of signatures over the year, the, this year, what does do I have to do to win the battle, especially with flip rebounding as well. One of the keys for Duke to win that battle saturday. Yeah, it's a, it's a fight, you know, it's a, it's a fight on the boards and you know Bacot, I mean he's, you know, I think it speaks for itself, his numbers that he's had, you know, the job, um, the job that he does, you know, rebounding the basketball on both ends and just just like every other game we go into, it has to be a battle. We have to have discipline, making sure we're not just pursuing it, you know, on the offensive end where they can just get run outs. But also when we have the opportunity we need to go rebound, that's been a strength of ours and that's not gonna change whoever we're playing against to help out with more than yeah, I mean, you know, we talked about five guys rebounding a lot and of course in this game, perimeter rebounding is huge and uh, you know, not just a cop but you know, Black will go nance. It's it's a battle on the boards. They have great size, great athleticism, experience. Uh, so it's important. You can't just be one on one with a cot, you know, rebounding. We all need to get in, get in there and do the job, The process of moving forward from last year. Help when you've got 11 new faces. I think you have to write it, you know, you're talking about last year, you're looking around and who's, who's with us last year. So it's it's uh makes hard, it makes it harder to do that. You know, it'd be like me and Jeremy just have a conversation, the two of us. So, uh, it's um, it is what it is. I mean, look, there's uh, there's the experiences that have led me to this point as a head coach and my time at Duke taken probably something from each one of those, right? And uh, so for me, I remember, and you know, you you naturally there's what four there, you know, starters are back this year. And so you have experiences playing against them last year, the year before and the year before that. And so there's familiarity with them, but for our team, it's it's new and new energy and new mindset and let's go, how did you individually kind of process? Yeah, I'll speak to the last one because that that was the last one, you know, when, when you lose, you know, any regular season game, there's you're moving on to the next, right? And, you know, for me, it was very complicated because your uh coach K's last game. So, you know, my relationship and the amount of battles I've been in with him that's over. And at the same time we have to we knew how much we were losing. And so you're now you kind of become the head coach where you have to figure out kind of officially unofficially, whatever you wanna call it, you have to figure out, you know, who's coming back and making a plan to attack. So there wasn't really time to, you know, think about much, it was all right. It's, you have the feeling of losing, which is not fun. You never, I I promise you, I hate to lose as much as anything and then you have to figure out how to put yourself in a position uh with the program successful moving forward since that night in new Orleans, a lot of people say their first year in the head coaching job is an absolute blur. What has it been like for you from there till now blur is a good way to put it blur is a good way. It's been uh it's been everything I expected and more. It's been exciting, thrilling. Um I I knew a lot would be thrown at us this year with the schedule that we have with the amount of new players, I'm just so proud of the group for sticking together for battling through adversity. You know, our nonconference schedule, we played, you know, three of the top 10 teams in the country and, you know, Purdue being, you know, number one right now, Kansas has been number one and we're right there with everybody, gone through some, you know, tough experiences on the road, some battles and just proud of the group, We're sticking with it and fighting and that's not an easy thing to do. It's not an easy thing to do where you can block out any noise or uh, anything like that. And our team has done that of course. You know, we've had to do that as a staff and just really proud of this group and how we persevered it was, it was just organic, you know, I mean he's, I think his first year back was around the time, my first years back, give or take a year or so. So we've always had a nice relationship as assistant coaches. You see everybody on the road and um literally bumped into each other last summer and you know, small talk, just catching up and literally just talked about our families. He was just talking about the toll that this job can take on family. And uh, I think he has three kids as well and you know, his family is everything to him and just like for me, so I just talked about that and have a lot of respect for him as a person, as a coach. I think there's Orlando we're in, Yeah, I feel like we're in Orlando a lot. You know, there's a bunch of tournaments going down there, I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure it's a blur. So it's, it's, I don't know if there's Orlando or not in the last six games, it seems like Tyreese has really hit kind of another level. What's different about him recently? What's clicking? Yeah, I think his confidence is really growing and you know, we threw him into your asking me Pat about, you know, first year, it's his first year and he actually shouldn't even be here right now. You know, we brought him a year early. So you know, we throw him right into the fire and sometimes when you do that you can, there's uh you go through moments where you have great success and you go through moments where you don't look very good and Tyreese uh that happened to him early. You know, really went through a tough shooting slump which probably impacted him and you just see his confidence growing each day. He's done amazing work with j Lucas, you know, every single day and his feel for the game, his shooting, his ability to make others better. Uh and he's got more in him. He's got a lot more in him. So really proud of him for what he's done. And I really think his best basketball is yet to come this year, still coach Jim Cameron, You've experienced it as a player with them at your backs assistant and now as a head coach, is there a difference over the years? Like does it feel like it's changed much in terms of the way the fans interact or provide energy or is it kind of the status quo over all these years that it still feels that way? The same. Yeah, it's um it's it's the same. You know, it's may be different for, you know, one year we had Speedo guy, I haven't seen, you know, Speedo guy here, it's, you know, so I don't want to get into, I'm not suggesting we should either, but I take that, I wish I could take that back. Uh, but uh, but besides that, it's the, yeah, if I said enough already, I think I've spoken too much, uh, just incredible passion, incredible support and uh, it's been, you know, if it's a 10 out of 10, the first time I remember, it's been a 10 out of 10 every time since, besides, uh, the year with Covid, besides that year, that was not fun. And let's not go back to that. This group with a lot of young guys on the road. Some of the detail attention and intensity wasn't what you wanted, needed that energy maybe more than some others because of the age. Yeah. You know what, it's funny you say that because I think it's uh, what I want Duke fans to feel is there along there right alongside us with his, in this journey, you know, and it is a journey, it's not gonna be, you know, I think back to my playing days and it ended in a national championship, uh, was fortunate to be a part of a national championship team as assistant coach. It was not linear. Like that thing did not go just up every step of the way we got knocked on our, but many times we we lost and, you know, with this group, we haven't been perfect, but this group has responded anytime it's got knocked down and I think that shows an incredible amount of character that these guys have. And uh, so for us, like when we're home, you know, we're all scrapping clone fighting together, you know, it's not like we're like, we're trying to do this. And so I felt that from everybody, I felt that from Cameron and you can't assume it's just gonna happen when your home either. Like it's, that's that's one thing for a young group. You can sometimes think it's just gonna happen. Our guys haven't felt that way. But that's what, that's what I want. Everybody in this building to feel any time we're in here, we're going through this together and we'll get there. But it's uh, it's not gonna be easy. And uh, we have to fight every time we're out here, whatever we had. Yeah, we actually was another night. We brought some pizza out and I had some students and camera and did some fun things with them and we will be back out other uh, tomorrow before the game as well. And camera college game day here saturday, get a chance to see him spend some time. So it's like for me, it's uh, we've built up such such an incredible tradition and a lot of it's a credit to coach K and what he's done, even though we've had, you know, success before, that coach k is clearly taking this to brand new heights and you don't want to take any of that for granted, you know, I mean what, it's my first year coaching and in my first year we have 500 sell out in a row and uh that's incredible. And so just I always want students, fans, everybody to know one how much we appreciate them. But to that we don't take it for granted. Like it's what makes it one of the most special places on earth, you know, to play any sporting event is here, when you say we'll get there, what's there? Yeah, it's too to get where we want to go right and you know, obviously that's you wanna win. I wish we were 21 all right now and you know, or 22 oh, and uh and you know, blowing through everybody, but that's not how it goes. And so for me and the day it's it's winning, it's doing it the right way. It's uh and for me, duke basketball has always been about next play. It's always about, you know, getting back up showing up, it's not about necessarily winning every game. And I think for us, we're learning that we're learning what it takes and, you know, getting there, is doing it every single day and uh we're we're on our way there for sure. Uh I don't think so. I don't think so. It's just, I've gone to that point where it's. Yeah exactly. No he would know he would have been six yeah five and that's my math offers your math off. I think it's yeah I think it's yours. Yeah so they do not remember and uh but my film is uh sometimes I'm recruiting visits. We will show old film and uh you get to mine still whether it's HD or not you can see who's who we start to pull out chris carol wells film. It's becoming where it's you know pretty grainy you know in 98. So it's you know I feel I feel pretty good with that still goal is for him to practice today. Yeah it's possible but he has to we have to see him practice and take the necessary steps the next couple of days. I don't wanna uh guarantee it for sure. I don't want to rule it out it's on the table but he needs to feel comfortable. We need to feel comfortable with how he looks and how he's feeling the next couple of days Coach. The last time you n. c. was out shot at the free throw line was a think December game against Louisville in which they won by 21 points. That really didn't matter to be honest with you. Um how do you plan to keep them off the free throw line? Just plain and simple. Yeah. Well it's hard right? Because you know Bacot I mean he gets the free throw line a lot. They have downhill drivers, you know love and and Davis gets there. I mean Davis is really the best you know, free throw shooter in our league. Uncharacteristic of him last night to miss a couple free throws. But uh it's you have to have discipline, you have to meet him early if you're late and all of a sudden, you know because got you under the basket, it makes it difficult. So having discipline and makes your five guys are playing together if you if you start playing them one on one, uh life can be pretty hard for you. All right, thank you.
