Sheer joy, patriotic pride: Holly Springs parents watch son take synchronized diving silver
Holly Springs native Andrew Capobianco and his diving partner Michael Hixon took the silver medal in the men's synchronized 3m springboard.
I know you guys just have so many emotions you're feeling right now, but described to me that that emotion that came over you after seeing the judges numbers, um your joy. Um you know, I'm actually still at a loss for words, it's really hard because I'm just so excited, I I feel so blessed and um I'm just at a loss for words right now. Sorry, I can tell you uh perspective is your son makes the olympics and you're just overjoyed at the prospect of having a child in the olympic games uh to then try to dream big enough for a medal. It gets to the next level of craziness more or less. And um as they dove, we originally saw the dive order and Darlene was worried, she said oh they're going first and I said that may be an advantage because if they come out hot and they can just throw dives in, everyone has to chase. And as the event went further and further, I noticed that they were opening up a lead except for of course the chinese who tend to be uh they tend to be pretty tough to beat in the pool and uh, when, when the, when the last dive went in thought it's attention until they finally hit the water and when they hit the water and you know that it's a score that can put them in medal contention, then it's just elation joy and relief. That's what we have you guys no yourselves that this has been something he has been aiming for, Andrew's been going for this since childhood. Um, you know, a lot of people probably looked at this and said, oh, you know, there may be a potential there for him to get there, but I mean you guys have been able to see it all the way through. I mean, can you talk about the sacrifices that went into this? Honestly? Um the sacrifice for me was that I had to stay home um, in the early years because Andrew has two brothers, so we had to have, you know, we had to split up, and Mike was the one that was his road buddy and went to everything with him and um, he called it, he called his career all the way through and because I wasn't able to be at most of his meets when he was younger, I didn't see it as much, and I was, I was like, not in denial, but like, no, this just can't be. Um, but the reason the recent uh, events that I was able to go to, I started hearing from other people besides my husband, I'm thinking, oh, you know, maybe he's just a proud dad, you know, but that was hearing from other coaches and other parents and I was like, oh my God, maybe this could, this could really happen. This, this might be andrews, you know, goal, it might come true. So as far as, as far as sacrificed on, on our side, um, as parents, you know, you have Children to give to them and take from yourself and, and for us, it's never been a problem. Um, the early mornings. Um, all of those 3:00 wake ups get on the road to meet in Tennessee or in Georgia, it's all so worth it. And listen, if, if he never made it to where he is now, it would have still been worth it because he's our son and you just want to see your child reach whatever their potential, maybe, um, seeing where he is now, we are just super happy for him. Um, what I'd like to say that's pretty important is um, this, this medal, this accomplishment, This isn't Andrews and it's, it's not just hours. Um, we always, we truly believe that Andrew's been gifted. God's giving him a gift and I can tell you that when the event ended, I couldn't believe the amount of people that blew up my phone that stayed up until 2:00 AM to watch our boy and to share in our joy. So what I'd like to say to all of our family and our friends that have supported along this medal is for all of them, it's for all of you guys were just sharing it with you. It's so beautiful to when you think about the fact that um north Carolina has definitely had its tough time during the pandemic the last two years, I'm sure have you know, been crazy for you guys as well as Andrew to trying to, you know, get through all of this while trying to stay on top of his training and um, and so to bring a little bit of joy back, I'm sure Andrew is just thrilled to bring a little bit of joy back to north Carolina. You just, you just said a mouthful. Um we've, we've lost friend, um Darlene and I unfortunately we've gone through over to ourselves, uh we call it chris chris christmas Eve last year and thankfully we made it through unscathed. Just a few days of uh, as far as what you just said, I'm living right now where unfortunately there's tension in so many different directions, what we're really praying for right now on, so happy that Andrew won this medal, not for him and not for us. And I'm hoping somehow it gets a little piece of a platform that God willing will grow to a larger platform where he could reach out and like you just said, near to bring people joy and to bring people some kind of unity and let us know that as a nation, you know, we have to, we have to get together and we have to be one and hopefully that little platform that he's granted, he can start a movement in the right direction. He's already healed just with how far he's gone so far. Um, you know, maybe past tensions with family members or friends or you know, um, he's brought people together that way. People are talking that haven't talked before. Um, people are coming together and rooting for the United States as a whole through him. And it's just a beautiful thing to see you guys. The last thing I wanted to bring up is the fact that yeah, leave this dude did this while he's been battling a cold. Absolutely. It was a little more than a cold, I'll tell you, I think he might have had bronchitis. He he was he was battling pretty hard and if you notice, um he had some tape on his back at the end of olympic trials, the olympic trials, we had a little scare because his back, he had a nice a little thing going on and we don't through trials with that and through the grace of God, um he went out to the olympic training facility in Colorado Springs um and he checked in there um and they worked on him and then uh his, his training, his physical therapist, um they figured out what was going on with his back and they were able to patch him back up in the last few weeks. Uh huh. Like I said before Andrew what makes his proudest about him is his humility that he just doesn't want the attention, but on the other half of that is his drive and his will to win and he does, he just failed. He just he will not give up and for us, that is a trait that is so rare. I I also think that um the struggles that he had to overcome during olympic trials just made him even stronger and mentally and physically at a limp at the olympics in Tokyo and and now you guys are the parents of an olympic medalist. Has anyone said that to you yet? Thank you very much. It's got a little ring to it, right? It's like it's ridiculous. Listen, him coming home from the olympics, I'm going to represent the country, going to represent God I was going to be enough for us and this is what we like to call the bonus plan for him to come home with what he can show. You know, he has a piece of wear of what he did is pretty cold. But what we've always told him to that is awfully important is enjoy the journey because it's not the metal isn't the game, the game is the journey and the lives that you touch and I believe that he gets that pretty well. And yes, the parents of an olympic, an olympic silver medalist is uh, it's kind of buff it where it's going to take awhile to sink into the sure, yeah. And I'm sure a lot of swimmers, younger swimmers are, are going to be ecstatic and thrilled to see him come back and I'm sure holly Springs is already thinking of ways to, to uh celebrate. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. I'm just hoping that he touches other divers and young divers or potential. I love to learn a new sport because unfortunately um it's not very it's not really heard about everybody knows swimming, swimming but nobody really knows about diving, diving part. Yeah. Yeah it's uh it's a really low key sport but it's it's very when it when it comes to actually watching it's a pretty high it's very exciting. It's funny because we have a few swimmers that we we were we were actually just down in Orlando. Um We were invited down as olympic parents to go to a watch party and with other olympic parents their Children could have been in rowing boxing, gymnastics. We got to speak with so many different people and one of the swim parents, it was pretty funny. He had said that watching swimming is exciting. It's it's fast face Diving in what these young men and young women do off of 10 10 ft and then sometimes the 30-foot tower is pretty breathtaking. So God willing. What Andrew comes home to is a reception where go out into our little town of holly Springs and the word and go back to the Duke dive club where he dove there and try to draw Children into a sport that really could use some some new young athletes. Absolutely. Um did you guys um have you spoken to him yet? He faced time. That's real quick. And he said, I can't talk long because I got to do interviews, but we would like scream and we were so excited and he's like, I know. And then he put his coach on and then put Michael Hickson on real quick so that we can congratulate them as well because it's really a team effort. It's um yeah, it's everybody involved, it's not just one person doing it. It's a team effort. Yes. When you got done with competition, we got rid of as many texts and uh messages and voices. We could we have you on online right now. And listen, we talked, yes, we thought we call them right away. That's his farm. We call this, we call this good busy. Um We're crazy busy and I'm blowing up, but it's blowing up for the right reason and this is stuff that you want to do. Um It took Andrew a little while to get on the phone with us because I guess he was running around the death and media, he was doing what he's supposed to do. He's soaking in the moment that he worked all these years for and for us. This is never about us and it will never be about us. Um I call myself a really good show for and I drove him back and forth and Darlene, she was the rock. She was the one back home with the boys. And what we always want this to be is we want this to be about him. This is his time and it's his game and we just pray that he can use, what's this, this gift that's been given to him. He could use this to inspire others. That's that's that's what this is all about. You guys. Thank you so much for your time, your, your faith. I love it. Um And And I am excited for him to when is he scheduled to do you guys know any scheduled to possibly get his next event will be on two August our time North Carolina time for am and then that's the prison and then this Which is actually normal. Our it'll come on at nine p.m. on the second now. Huh? Excuse me Because I don't know how that works. So the priest. So this problem on two August is this is this is this for a different event? That's correct me. I'll explain it all to you and then you can break down and cut what you want. But how the event works. Um the synchro event that you just saw tonight, that's six dives put your six dives in, who's the best team in the world? 888 teams around the world qualified. So what happens in individual is it's a lot different in individual and probably dive with I would say 40-50 divers from around the world start competition that Freeland six dives they take the top 18 divers and that go into a semi file in the semifinal. They will it down to 12 divers and that's the final. That will be held our time. North Carolina time at four a.m. On august 3rd. God willing. Um if Andrew continues to put his list in the way he can um he should be a finalist and um I have stopped doubting him and I stopped doubting any will to win that he has. So um, I'll just say that if he can throw his six guys in, I believe he can compete with anyone in the world and it's gone well. Absolutely, absolutely. It's meant to be. God picks the medal when he is, he's already picked them. It's already written the book. We're just we're just reading it, watching it. So just like I said fun times, so it's all in, so it's a teamwork, it's all individual after this. Yes Andrew Andrew will be diving all the different countries and one other diver from the United States. They divers from each country and uh Andrew will be diving against like I said I would upwards of maybe even over 50 divers wow okay so we can expect to see him do his own thing on august 2nd in the point area. But yeah. Alrighty awesome. I'm excited, I'm excited. Alright guys well this won't be the last time just let me know if you have a party. Oh yes no listen he's coming, he's coming home on the seventh of august R. D. U. And we will be dragging into the house, I'm going to have a little home like the neighbors and oh that would be nice. Yes we'll see what the town, we'll see what the town wants to do um And we'll get together as many people as we can to make sure that he knows that he did, that he is loved and that this is a real punch in the arm for holly springs. It's a bunch of the north Carolina. It's a good stuff, awesome. That's awesome. Well, you guys just, you know, continue to do the great work that you all are doing to. I mean, definitely, definitely touching lives and speaking to us, you know, allows us to be able to continue to, um, to really share the message. Um, and get the point across that. Um, it's definitely, you know, is more than just, it's more than Andrew, It's, it's, you know, there's, there's God willing near, there's a bigger plan for Andrew than jumping in the pool. And that's what we're really hoping that is going to be able to move people in a way together and to hell are yellow our country because I think we're a little broken right now
