Slavin: It's gonna be good hockey
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin shares his thoughts on the Eastern Conference Final series against the Florida Panthers.
Present kind of a little bit of both of what you faced in the first round of the, maybe the grit of the Islanders and maybe a little more of the finesse of the Devils. Yeah, I guess you could say that. I mean, they, yeah, they're a solid team, good goaltender, good defenseman that can move well and a forward group that's big, but also really skilled. So, yeah, it'll, it'll be a really fun series though. It's gonna be good hockey as one of the league's most gentlemanly players over the last few years. How do you handle a guy like Matthew, especially when it comes to a series like this. I mean, he just, I mean, he's, he's gonna be the type of player that is, he's a really good player and so you just try to not get dragged into any of it. Um, I know for myself that's fairly easy. Um, but, uh, yeah, it's gonna be fun. He's a fun player to play against and I mean, he, he's effective at what he does. And so, um, we got, we got to make sure we stay disciplined with it. How much do you relish? Going against the best players in the league. Oh, it's so much fun. That's, that's, I mean, as a defenseman it's fun to try to shut them down and, um, do it in a, in a gentlemanly way, I guess you could say. But, uh, no, I, I, it, it's fun and those are the nights that, uh, I mean, that's why we play the game. So, when was your last face was not received? Given? Um Never, never, I don't think your little brothers or anything. Uh I mean, maybe Emerson, but, uh, she comes at me pretty hard some days, but no, that's about it on the corner. Uh Paul said, you know, Rob Moore on the system you guys play, makes you guys the most consistent team basically seen right now in the NHL. Where do you think that comes from? What do you think when you get that? Um I mean, I just, I think it speaks to, to how we've been playing in the past couple of years and, and the identity that Roddy is really trying to establish here within our group and within our organization. Um, just making sure that we are, we are dialed in it. It's a five man effort when everyone's out on the ice. And so whether that's four, check back, check, Puck Crush or whatever it is, we're doing it together and we're doing it hard and it has to be consistent because when I know talks about it all the time. But if you take that breath, that's when it typically ends up in the back of our net. And so just making sure none of those happen. How much did your game change this year? With Brent, compared to maybe with Tony or even with, with the year before? Um, I don't know if my game necessarily changed too much. Um, I've always just tried to be a solid, solid defenseman and, uh, worry about keeping the puck out of my net and letting my partner do their thing and making sure I'm there to back him up. But, I mean, playing with Burns, he's been great. I mean, he works his tail off. He's good on both sides of the puck. Um, and so it's a treat to play with him. Is it, there's no difference. Like Tony was maybe more of a pass first guy than a shoot first where burns. It seems like the second guy hits his stick a lot of times. Yeah. No, I mean, I definitely try to get him the puck as much as I can. Um, maybe, maybe I kept the puck a little bit more last year. I don't know. But, um, yeah, I know when it's on burns stick, it's going in the nets, good things are gonna, probably gonna happen. So I just try to get him the puck. What's it feel like to be this close to the ultimate pride? I mean, I almost feel like we, as media people can feel that change is how we act and how's it kind of affecting you guys. I mean, yeah, I mean, we're close but we're also a long ways away. I mean, it's, it's only half way. We've got eight wins and so we got eight more to go. Um And so it's definitely a long path still, it's not gonna get any easier. Um And so, I mean, it's, it's exciting to be where we're at, but we also know there's a lot of work to do. So the same way you, you're, you're halfway there, but you've been to the third round before, I guess in 2019 that there's a certain elevation and awareness around the league, even probably around the triangle. Um I know you're not focused on that but it is an opportunity to build more of the fan base, uh, with a big series this far in you. Kind of, you kind of sense that, that here we are on the, the edge of really bringing something to the fans that gets them involved. Yeah, I think so. I think the cans have been really strong over the past 56 years ago, just building that momentum. And so anything to help continue to build that momentum. But then you give something like an Easter conference finals and I know they're going, they're going nuts already. Everyone's excited about it. People that I talked to outside the rink are excited about it. And so, yeah, I think there's a little bit of momentum there and continuing to just the, the community here that we have in Raleigh. Um And so, uh hopefully we have a better showing than the last time we were in the conference finals and um take a one game at a time though to, to follow up on that. I mean, all the teams that are left are all Southern half of the country, not original six or Canadian teams. You guys already to what Curt was asking about market, like the stadium game, we already saw that kind of thing. But what are your observations that's been around the game a long time to see these non, non traditional markets being the ones that are the last ones standing in this part of the playoffs? I think it speaks to a lot of what those markets have done. I mean, in Tampa, the past three years going to the Stanley Cup every year and building their market down there. And like you said, all the teams that are in the market right now are in the last one standing right now. It's just, I think it speaks to what they're trying to do and how they're engaging in the game and the fans and just putting a good product on the ice. And so, um, it's cool to see, it's great for the game continuing to build the game across all the different demographics and, and making sure that, uh, the Southern States get some good hockey. Have everyone in the room? Have you guys felt slighted at all? Whether it was the injuries and people may not believe in you guys not to see you or to their point even, you know, being a Southern team and it seems like everybody north of the border kind of loses their mind as soon as the last Canadian team, they don't get too happy about that. Um No, I, I don't think it fazes us. I mean, we, we know what we have inside the locker room and, and we believe in ourselves, we believe in the way that we play. And so, I mean, outside of that, we can't worry about what anyone else says about us or injuries. We've always, I mean, all year we've had some injuries going on. And so just the next man up by mentality and guys stepping into big roles that they might not have had, um, throughout the season and they've been given the opportunity and they've taken advantage of it. And so I just got to continue with that. You know, this might be a silly question, but does the level of anxiety change at all? Now, now that you guys know your schedule, you know the schedule for this series, you guys know how you can strategize or whatever because there was a lot of buzz about the N H taking forever to kind of like announce that schedule. I'm curious how you guys were taking that from a player perspective as an, as you want to get back on the ice. I don't think it increases anxiety. I would say it just, it calls it down, you know what, you know, who you're playing, you know, what the schedule is now, you just got to prepare and do what you've been doing for the first half of the playoffs and preparing the right way and just getting focused mentally. You know, it's the change in Jordan's mentality. He went from rooting for his brothers. So now he, now he gets to play against it to watch. It will be a lot of three big bodies on the ice that they're all on at the same time so that it will be fun for him though. I mean, it's people that obviously he knows very well and knows very well, but at the end of the day, as soon as the puck drops, he's going to battle them hard, just like you would. Any other player? All right. Thanks.
