UNC coach Mack Brown discusses team's first loss, preps for Georgia Tech
North Carolina football coach Mack Brown speaks with reporters about his team's loss on Saturday to Virginia. He also discusses preparations for Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.
Ok. Good, good morning, everybody. Uh, obviously, uh, very disappointed in, in Saturday night. Um, and you can look at it and I looked at the game five or six times and, and talk to our coaches, obviously a number of times and our team met with everybody. And, uh, the truth is it all falls on me. Uh, it's my fault. I hired every coaching staff member here. I have recruited every four of us here. Um, I make the decisions for everything we do. Uh, I looked at, uh, last year's Wake Forest game where we won. We were excited and didn't play well. The next week against tech, I looked at the South Carolina game where we won. We were excited. We didn't play well against, uh, F State. So I knew this was, uh, uh, a week after Miami where it looked like we wouldn't play well. We didn't play well against Virginia last year. We, we didn't play with, uh, high intensity and, and, uh, uh, we were lucky to win because our offense, uh, played well and won the game and then you add that, uh, Virginia's one in five. They've just won a game. They're on, uh, they, they're off week so they put in a lot of new stuff, uh, be fresh when they're coming in. They've got absolutely no pressure. There's no buzz about the game. It's small break. Uh, I mean, there were all kinds of check marks that say that this was gonna be AAA tough one and a handful and nobody thought it was. And that's usually when you're in trouble. Um, and, and they had their team, uh, more excited about play than I had ours. Uh, they coach better than I coached. Um, and that's what happens and, and, uh, you look around the country. Texas and OU game is always a tough one after that. It's hard to play. So ou has trouble and has to stop a, uh, two point play to beat central Florida who lost three games in a row. Texas has to stop Houston on the 10 yard line, uh, with one minute left to win the games and both of them did that. Washington has got, uh, one of the best quarterbacks in the country after the, he and they didn't score an offensive catcher and they're running up and down the failure of the Arizona State. So it happens, um, across the country. Uh, it's not different but you gotta find a way to win the game. We didn't play well against Appalachian State, but we found a way to win the game and the, the defense, uh, uh, intercepted the ball in the end zone. They stripped the ball going in at the one, they stopped, uh, Virginia at the end of the game and gave us the ball back for a minute, 22 seconds. I thought we'd win the game and that's who we are and that's what we've done. Uh, and we, we didn't do it. So, um, I, is it a bad loss? All losses are bad, all losses are bad. The loss to Clemson was bad. We lost the conference championship. We've only been in that game twice and since 81. So that's a bad loss. It was a cost to lost to Oregon Bat. He had a great team and we had a lead and got beat with 19 seconds left. That's a bad loss. And I learned from, uh, put Stallings. Um, when, when he said, you think one's not a bad loss, try to lose it, it becomes a bad loss. Not only, but, uh, everybody expects you to win every game and you expect to win every game. So, um, but where does the, the fall come on me 100% that I didn't do a good enough job with our team and our coaches, uh, and I, I let our team down, I let our coaches down, I let our staff down, I let our administration down and I let our fans down and our fans have been wonderful and, and, and, um, there's no other way of saying, let's just get period. That's facts. Um, and as a young coach, I probably couldn't stand up here and say that that was true. So, I'm, I'm, I'm disappointed in me and, uh, what you do is when you get disappointed you get back up and go to work, I take the negative and turn it into a positive. And, uh, that's what this week's about. It's, uh, you learn from losses and our team, it's a great teachable moment for last week because we weren't as, as, didn't have as much energy as they did. And, uh, and, and that, that gets you in trouble. Uh, practice was good last week. I thought we'd handle it. It really was and usually practices the way you play and then we did a lot of good things in the game. We just did a lot of things that, that you can't do and, and, and still win. Um, so, but, but we had the better team. We didn't have the better team out there and, and that's, that's what matters. I learned from Dick to me many, many years ago. It's not the best team. It's the team that plays the best that day. That's the only thing that matters. The only thing that matters. And, uh, it was like their ball game and, and their dream become and be the top 10 team and, and we allow it, I can't do that. You just can't do that. And be a top 10 team, like I said, Washington, Texas and Oklahoma. Um, they overcame their at the, didn't play their best but overcame it. We didn't and we did against that state. So that's something you have to do to, to obviously, uh, to, to try to stay and, and, and be a, an undefeated team. Uh, wasn't a typical performance for us on offense. Uh, field position was horrible starting out with a block, uh, to an unprotected player, uh, on the kickoff opening kickoff and you, when you're playing a team like Virginia, that doesn't have a lot of confidence. You need to start fast and we started h and gave them some confidence. Uh, we didn't start fast and we didn't finish track. Most of the two things we talked about all week that we had to do, uh, of the eight drives in the first half that we had, uh, all of them were minus 25 or worse and three of those drives were, which doesn't give your offense a chance. And part of that is our defense is not stopping them and, and part of it's like they average 50 yards per punt, we average 33 and, and that was a, a huge difference in field position and, and, uh, their ball bounced and bounced out of the one or, or the two. So they did a good job of, of keeping us backed up with those three balls, uh, inside the uh, the 10 for sure. Uh, we didn't play good complementary football and that's something we've really done. So, our goal in the spring was to stop the run. We did it. Uh, they rushed for over 200 yards. Our goal in the spring was to run the ball. Got hats, run the damn ball with you. So we didn't do it. Uh, I told the coaches this morning we work on it every day in the spring and then you've got a great back like on Mar and if you don't hand him the ball and if your passing games not hitting, go to something that is, we've got enough good players that, that you gotta do what you're doing best at that time. Uh, and Marian was averaging 7.2 yards per carry. So getting the ball, getting the ball, if we're dropping some balls and not protecting well or for the passing games off, go with what you're doing best. We said in the spring we had to be better on third down the last two weeks. We haven't been, it's because we're, we're not throwing them all as well. So we're getting in third and long situations last week, it was penalties this week it was third and long. So we're four of 13 on third downs and zero for two on four things. And those are that we were the best in the country or suck best in the country two weeks ago. So we got to go back and start doing those things better. Um, then we said Reds on both sides. We, uh, uh, we're one for three and touchdowns in the red zone on offense because you're not running the ball. Well, uh, and we're four for six, gave up four stands for six trips, um, uh, all defense which is unacceptable and the two that didn't score, we stripped the ball out of Armani Chaplins that stripped the ball out of the one minutes after the pass. So they could have beat just two more touchdowns if we don't strip the ball intercept. So those are facts. Those are ugly facts, but they're facts and, and that's all stuff that we have to do better. Um, we gave up, uh, nine of explosives, which is too many, but we did have 11. Um, but we weren't consistent with, with the offense at all. Um, we allowed a touchdown drive on the first possession, which is the, the first time somebody scored at home in, in the first quarter all year. Uh, again, we, we weren't ready to go and, and we, we were up 24 to 14 in the third quarter and, um, I got to step up on defense and get a stop and get them off the field and try to extend that 10 point lead to 17 and they drive a 13 play drive from 74 yards and, and we need to step up and we didn't at all, uh, really proud of Bryson Desmond and Tez Walker. They played great on offense. It's a shame sometimes when you don't win the game, people talk about how bad everything is. They don't talk about good. And some guys, I mean, they played really, really well. Uh, Power Echo played maybe his best game and Stick Lane was an outstanding player on defense as well as being an outstanding player on special teams. He was all over the field and played really well. And then Bo Atkinson had a, um, a strict, uh, fumble with a quarterback and Armani Chaplin had the strip that, that went out of the back of the end zone and gave us a chance to win the game and the interception in the end zone. So he made a couple of plays that were really, really good for us. And then Noah Burnett, I think T for Ken and Phil go, he, he continues to do a really good job for us. Uh, so proud of him a penalty on the first play of the, the game with, uh, the, the first kickoff. Um, a young guy hit a, a guy in the back. Uh, we can't do that. Uh, we were, we punting inconsistent punting throughout the night. Um, so again, our, our special teams, uh, really didn't help us, I thought, but without a guy that's kicked off, uh, Coach Warren and the kickoff coverage team did a really good job of, uh, of figuring out ways to kick, kick off without having the guys that were kicked off before. So we skied one, we squid one, we kicked one deep but they covered well. And then, uh, that was a, a danger point going into the game that, that we did. Well, um, and, uh, that we nearly had a P block but we have to run into each other and that's just kind of the, the way that the night worked out for us. Um Still when you look at uh Cancer Awareness Week and gain, um it doesn't take away from the, the, the thought that these incredible young people had, uh and our staff to, to give messages to somebody who had cancer that the, the they're hoping feels better and knows that they care about him and that they love him. And uh uh uh my ball to, uh uh reminded Jordan Randy's wife who's struggling with cancer. Uh, came and Rucker came and said, I want to give Eric Mineros my ball. Uh because, uh Eric is such a good person. It sounds like he means so much to this place and he's got cancer or whether it's Sue Walsh or, or Kindle or, or people that struggle. So sometimes we forget that uh uh the fact that, that uh uh recognition for people who have cancer, uh and that you love them and you care about them is really important. Uh even on a day where, where we lose a game. Um, you start looking at, uh, uh, we're still a top 20 team. We would have been happy with the schedule. We had, I saw the other day we had the 13th ranked schedule in the country with power five, at six and one and, and being ranked 17th in the country, we, we would been pleased with that in September. Um, so we gotta give our guys credit there. There's still a factor, we still have a lot of football to play. Uh Even though we, we slipped up and I had a, a disappointing Saturday which would rather never have. Uh There's only six left there on the feet and we were one of those six last week, the two of us got beat. Uh So it's really, really hard to be on the field. We do know that uh and all these teams are about like you look at Georgia Tech beats Miami uh two weeks ago on the road. Uh They lose the Boston power on Saturday. Miami beats Clemson that their starting quarterback and starting and the local. So I, I'm just go play, go play. It's, and you gotta do it every week. Everybody's got players from the, uh with the transfer portal, but there's uh very few people are without players. And every week I'm starting to look at the, uh the roster and the depth chart of these teams. We play and there's transfers all over the place and, and if you've made recruiting mistakes, you can catch up and you can catch up. So, uh, and, and we've used that some for us but, uh, there's 10, um, 1 loss teams, uh, that are left and then those one loss in, in power five. I don't, if you're, you're 15 years old. Ok. I don't go overall. So we're not in F CS or group of five. And of those one loss teams of Tower five, Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Oregon and Utah. So there's some pretty good folks in there that, that uh we're sitting in the same group with, there's 14, 2 loss teams and, and Duke is, is one of those, they've lost to Florida State at Notre Dame. They've lost to two really good teams and I got to see some of Duke when I got home. Uh And they're really good and, and they had a quarterback that, that was uh struggling some and they still were up 10 to nothing on Florida State. I think it's 2017 and in Tallahassee. So they're played great defenses. They run the ball. I was really, really impressed with you, uh watching them play. Uh And then you've got Miami's a two loss team that just beat Clemson, Notre Dame. It's a two loss team US C Florida, Tennessee and LSU. Uh So a lot of folks out there that are losing some games that that normally aren't in those positions as you look at it. Uh, Georgia Tech is, uh, uh, a game that's been tough for us. Uh, we've lost two out of three since I've been here. We did win at Bobby Light Stadium in our first year here. Uh, but in Atlanta, Atlanta hadn't been good to the tar heels. We've lost, uh, 10 of 12. Hear me now, we've lost 10 of the last 12 games in Atlanta to Georgia Tech. So, um, everybody thinks we've got Miami's number because we beat them five in a row with Georgia Tech had North Carolina's number. Uh, and before I got here, uh, in Atlanta. So, uh, that, that makes this, uh, a game that, that people should project that we lose, period because we have 10 out of 12 is pretty good percentages. Uh, I'm, I'm plugged out of a bet, but it looks pretty good to me that, that, uh, we haven't done very well down there, so they'll be excited, um, that they'll feel like they're gonna win, um, because they have, uh, and we'll, we'll have our hands full and we got to get back to, to work, Rick. He's done a great job as the Georgia Tech alumni to pull them all together and, and they're, they're playing really hard and, um, he, he'll have them ready to go and play with a whole lot of energy and we've got to do the same thing, um, in our games at eight o'clock at night. So that's, uh, another, we've had more night games this year than, than we've had, I think. And, uh, this goes back to work when we were, we were in Texas. Um, so, uh, fans get to it. We got a great group of fans in Atlanta come to the game and help us. Um, if you're a fan, it's frustrated because we lost the game, um, decided to go help, get, get to Atlanta this weekend and help us if, if you really care that there's a difference in yelling and caring. So with fall break, if you couldn't make it to the game Saturday, maybe chi maybe you could help us a little bit. Uh So think about how important it really is to you. Not just how much you yell after win or how much you stick your chest out after after uh uh how much you yell after a loss or how much you stick your chest out after when you can help us and you have had it heard us that our students weren't there. So, um that, that they've made a huge difference in our fan base. So get to Atlanta and help us and, and that's, uh my, my last thought question. Where have you been a lot of games? Lost games? When do you have it Saturday? You sleep. It was such a tough philosophy. No, they, they're all tough. You, you, if you sit there and you, you wonder why you lost that. That's my, my job is to go back and, and try to figure out shit what happened and what could we have done on Tuesday? What have we missed? What happened? What happened? Wednesday? Go back and look at Wednesday's practice again. Why did we, uh, and, and I understand why you, we didn't have as much energy as they did. Uh, the, the, the older coaches have always told me you're gonna have a lot of energy probably four times a year and you're gonna have plenty of the rest of the world and we've already had energy more than four times. We, we've had to play because we've had a really tough schedule. So I got that, but you got to figure out ways to win and that's our job as coaches that if they're not gonna have the same energy, how do you get them started? How do you start? So, so my Saturday night is go, I, I watch the game, I watch the TV copy, I watch the game. So I, I stay up to about four or five in the, in, in the morning because I just can't sleep, win or lose because I need to see what happened. And then I'm responsible on Sunday for telling the players what I saw, telling the coaches what I saw and trying to be really hard on them, uh, uh, harder on myself than fans are. Um, but I've got to be hard on me and then tell them, why didn't we do this and why didn't we fix it? How did we miss that? And, and we can't miss it again. We gotta fix it now. And there's a, there's a, a process of you got goals. Well, goals aren't any good unless you reach it. I have goats if you don't reach them. So if we say we're gonna stop the run, why they might and if they're running the ball, why don't we put a level up there, they can throw it over our head. Come on, man. Um, and, and we, we said we gotta get the ball roar. That was one of the goals for the week. We didn't, why didn't we? And we've got, we've got great coaches on offense. They've done so well. Why didn't somebody on that offensive staff? Why didn't I step up and say, uh, come on, man, hand it to him or because you, you hate to get involved with play selection during a game because I've done that and it, and it's hard to talk to a guy a lot while he's got a whole process and he's, he's trying to figure out what he's doing up there and sometimes you can have too much conversation. But, but, uh, that's my job. My job is to figure out even if we win what was good that we need to get better and what was bad that we do have to fix. Why was it bad? And how do we fix it? And, and that's what I've been spending the last two days trying to do. So, what were the conversations with respect? And you go back and look in hindsight about some of the staff, uh, just like we're heading here. I'm, I'm at a stage in my life where I'm honest, uh, with their backpacks, uh, and, and I said he touched it five times the second half. It's averaging 7.2 yards per carry. We had a 10 point lead. Defense should have stepped up and you didn't want any. Why? Then I didn't defense stop him when he's 24 to 14 and, and put us in a position right there to, to go up 17. Why not? That's what we're supposed to do. That's what you get paid for and then offensively why don't we kill some clock on the ball some if we're not throwing inconsistent, why, why, why don't we do that? So, and you, you usually don't give any answers because they're, the coaches are great people, their great husbands, their great fathers, they're crushed that we didn't do our job. They're, they're crushed. So, so I mean, and here I am, I'm jumping on them, they're down. Uh, y'all are jumping on them, media is jumping on, fans are jumping on, everybody's jumping on them at some point on Tuesday. You gotta start picking up and and that's what we do because it's, uh, you gotta figure out what's wrong, figure out why you didn't fix it and usually say, I realize how to fix it. You get in the game, you know, you got to win. You're trying to keep your top 10, you know, things aren't working and sometimes you don't handle things as well as you, as you'd like to. Uh, that's, they're human beings. They're not video games that in 2014, that's a, you know, they just got mhm reversal. Are you most disappointed that have changed? I'm most disappointed they didn't step in that. I I'm not, I'm, I'm disappointed a lot of stuff. I gotta, I gotta rest. Um but I'm, I'm also uh excited that they, they stopped two touchdowns from happening that gave us a chance to win. So that's what you gotta do. You gotta, everybody does something good and usually in games there's always stuff that's bad that you've got to fix and when you win, people don't notice it and they let it go. If you lose, people are looking for every little thing that would have made a difference. And that, that's why you, you over criticize on losing and you celebrate on the, that's, that's why I have to look at it like we lost every game because the coach, you to walk in on Sunday all pumped. And I said, no man, you, you, here's my list. Come on, let, let's let's don't walk around because you're proud at dinner last night. Everybody patting me on the back. Let's look at facts. Um But, but yeah, we, we, uh it was a complete, uh, loss by, by our whole team because everybody could have stepped up. Uh, but normally in my experience, if you give up 228 yards rushing and rush for 100 and 43 they have the ball 37 minutes and you got it 23 minutes. You've lost the game. You packed up that a man, what? Just along those lines? And I, what explanation did, did Chip give you for, for the lack of a, more on? Was it possible that, I mean, you're, you're caught up in the game? He didn't realize that he didn't touch the ball as much as he, he probably should have ever. So it was, it was a human, he want to win chips. A great guy and he's done a tremendous job and he's got Freddie Kitchens who's brilliant sitting there next to him. Sometimes you, you wanna win so badly, you, you miss it. That's just what happens. I've, I've called you before and you get through this time trying to get away and break so good. When you're in trouble, you won't even pull you out and then, and we drop some balls. I mean, so it, it just, um uh it just, it's a, it's a hard job. It is, it is, it is really a hard job and people have no concept of how hard it is to call plays and call defenses because they've never done it. So it's unfair to ask people when you've got about 15 seconds and you're, you're sitting up there, you're going fast and everything's happening and, and I have to tell all the coaches to shut up because they want to win. So they're all giving suggestions to the poor soul. Uh, I wanted to call us. I said, shut up and let him call the place you talk during time outs, you talk when the offense is off the field, you don't talk to a coordinator while he's trying to think. But it's, it's a hard job and, and when we run them down the field, their business get greater all of a sudden, greats great. They, they don't get much credit but they get a lot of places that are actually good. You see times? Ok. So I think it's been great that I've had that many ranked teams. That's pretty cool. Paul is giving me a call so I don't work at all that stuff. I try every week to win every game that we got and I, and I've lost a bunch of them. I won 2 80 lost quite 100 and 40 or something. So, I mean, I, when people say this is the worst loss ever and I said, I don't know, I got, I got a bunch of them. I got, I got a long list of bad losses sometimes if we want to get the bad loss of this coach, 35 years, probably gonna have some bad losses. Or I'd have more wins than Luke Rockman or whoever's up there. I know. But just check you. I was gonna say something that seems to be forgotten by Virginia. Virginia played their, uh, we have their eyes when they feel behind. Yeah. Well, they, they really did and, and that's why when you got a team that's struggling, you can't let them get confidence. They had no pressure. So they're, they're coming in to have fun. Their dream is to win the game if everybody expects them to lose. So they're gonna be in there. They've had two weeks. I thought they, they changed a lot of things on offense and gave us some new looks and new formations and new motions and, and I, I thought they really did a good job. So I, I don't want, because we didn't play well. I don't want to take away from what Tony and Virginia did because they did a good job. Must have like 20 in that position. He really did second form and he made some good throws. They hit a wheel, right. A power had him covered perfectly and then he hit him. Uh, and they, they did, they did some, um, I know, uh Ford played really well. He caught 12 balls. You can't let him catch 12 balls. We knew he was a really good player coming in. Um, so really the, the quarterback and, and four of the two, the beat us. What is that? You, uh, they're, uh, they're a lot like Virginia. They're last year, they're gonna run the ball. Uh, they've got a new quarterback, Haines King from, uh, um, at Texas A and M, his dad's a high school coach in East Texas and he can fly. He's a track guy and, and he ran for 100 and 50 yards last week. So we got Virginia's running down the field. This one runs faster than him, uh, as we look at it. So, um, and they've got great speed. They've got the best speed of anybody at wide receiver that we've seen. Uh, they can fly. They're all 10, something 100 m guys. So they're, they're really, really fast. Now, did you see the response on Sunday to be that you wanted to see after, after the game that the guys sometimes, uh, not yet, they were crashed and I don't, I don't usually do very well on Sunday. I feel awesome. Y'all see me that I'm not, uh, I don't usually help them much. I, I'm usually too factual after, after bad games. Uh, so I've got to pick them back up today and tomorrow I gotta, I gotta start now and, and, and pick it back up. That's, that's one of the great things about this press conference. This kind of ends my last week and, and starts the next week. Uh, I won't see the players today but I'll see them at 6 30 in the morning and we gotta go to work, I think of a last year's team kind of had that to. Mhm. Yeah. You, you know, uh, I don't think it snowballed State was good. I came down to a midfield goal in double overtime. Those games have been good. Year four is the same. Uh, Clemson was better than we were and we tried hard. I thought the game was better than the score. We lost three turnovers and end up in, uh, uh they blocked field goal. We buckled it to 24 with Omari and had an interception for a touchdown. So it's 17 point swing. Uh, but we played hard and then against Oregon, we played our tail off with seven guys gone on defense and offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. So, uh, if you look at it, I thought, I thought way too much has been made of the four game losing streak at the end, losing to Georgia Tech was a game that, that we were up 17 to nothing. And, and that game is very much like this game Saturday night. It, it's the same game to me. We, we didn't have, uh, the same energy as they did and they did a better job managing their stuff than we did but, but, uh, you can't let one get beat you twice. Uh, everybody been patting these guys on the back for six weeks. That won't happen this week that when they go out and eat that it won't be the same blokes. People will be staring at them instead of hugging them. Uh, there's a difference. That's just the way it is. That's the way our world is. Like when you have something else, do you think the guys might play a little, uh, this coming in sort of tech now? That sort of gotten tracking? So, yeah, so to speak behind, you know, it's hard to tell because you're talking about 100 and 20 guys. So when you say, are they gonna play, who? I mean, e each one of different, they, they play different, they, they have different feelings, different emotions, different things happening in their lives. Uh, so you never know. I thought they played hard Saturday night. They didn't play with the same energy that they did the week before and, and I, how does that balance out? What percentage is that per kid? I don't know. You know, you just look at it but, but I didn't, our, our crowd didn't have the same energy. The game didn't have the same energy. We didn't have the same energy. I don't, I think our coaches probably didn't have as much energy as theirs. I went on their sideline. But, uh, uh, they, they were free and, and turn it loose and I'm sure our guys felt pressure to stay undefeated and they felt pressure to top 10 and, um, but I got the pressure to so win more games. So pre there's pressure in this business, there's pressure. If you're one in five, you don't wanna do one in six. So there that, uh, I have a portal question for you. We've seen some teams when they're trying to find a quarterback and go in the portal and maybe it works or maybe it doesn't and they're back in the portal again. You guys have had star star gold in terms of homegrown you recruited and you were able to develop, do you evaluate the quarterback position differently than when you're looking at a receiver, you know, like you've done or filling spots and you know, do you, is it one of those things that you wanna make sure you hit on quarterback? So you don't have to go in the portal for quarterback since that's can be sort of a revolving wheel? Yeah. Uh Aaron, it's a, it's a good thought. What we've got is we've got on a yellow played quarterback has been a coordinator, a chip coordinator. Um Freddie Kitchens, been a coordinator and head coach in NFL coach, quarterbacks of Clyde Christiansen. We've got them looking at, uh, every day, looking at the quarterbacks on our campus and evaluating them every day. And, uh, and, and then we're, we have them looking at uh high school guys to, to make sure that we have the right evaluation and then with a, a portal guide number one, nobody's in the portal. So you're sitting there wondering who's getting in. You can't tamper some do but we're, we're not gonna call somebody and say if you get the port, we'll take it, it's not legal. Um And then you've got to make sure that you, you try to get a guy that's experienced and you try to get a guy that does what you wanna do offensively as much as you can. Um But, but we, we're, we're, uh not experienced in the quarterback portal business. We've been really lucky to have Sam and Drake. Um So that, that's, that's all new for us and stuff that we're evaluating right now that we should do that. Now, is there, is there an added value of, of all the positions to hit in recruiting, maybe quarterback so that you're able to groom a guy over a couple of years, maybe have him ready as opposed to, like I said, dipping into the portal and what could be a revolving door if you miss? Yeah, no question what, uh Le Riley hit on three of the album, the Heisman or something, you know. So it was so weird and strange to, to do that. Um But, but, uh, yeah, that, that's AAA big question mark. And you, and, and we, we played tight game. So you had trouble getting your guys in, uh, to let them see and let them play, at least with Jacoby and, and Drake, we got them, they both played half of the game. Oh, was that Wofford? Yeah. Yeah, they both played that on the Wor game two years ago and Jacoby would be that guy right now if he had transferred. So that's kind of got our, our numbers, uh, where we, we've got that older boy, that quarterback that could fit in for you talked before, uh, is made, discuss the same as, uh, security now and things like that. But how does that impact if at all, you know, preparation from the practice? You know, this guy from big second extreme point. How does that kind of impact? Yeah. Uh J that's another great question. You gotta be careful that, that they don't over kick now because there's sp and everybody gets a pull or gets a sore leg or they're, they're tired. Uh, and you, you see that Tom's first game, he was so excited and then the second game, it didn't go as well for him. So then we and Cole Wayan came in and hunted the last punt did a good job. So now those two compete this week, uh, but you're looking at, uh, no, a, um, with him kicking field goals, would you rather not have him kicking off and kicking field goals? What if he pulls the muscle? Uh, then you've lost your kicker. So you're trying to get Liam back for the Kickoffs. Uh, so that, that's, uh, 35 years. I've never seen anything like this brother. I mean, it's a, it's a new one for me. So, but, but it is what it is. So if they, they're not gonna cancel games, we still gotta play. You mentioned, um, I think it was last week for what are some of the things that you're writing? Yeah, if you look at operation time, I gotta get it off. I gotta catch up and get it off and that's your snapper and your punter and you look at ball location. So does he, you, you don't want the ball in the middle of the field because you got a chance to return it. Uh with the whole field, you wanna, uh cut down the field in thirds. So you'd like to have it near the numbers. Uh And then you've got to look at the height. Uh How long does the, the hang time, uh, and, and length? Uh How far can you extend it down there? But you want to get it up. So you get a chance to cover it after watching the film. Is this just an aspect? Some of them? I, I love, I love you handle that with him because he's, he's met with him. I haven't. Uh But, you know, Greg's so good that it's, uh, he's one of those that if there's ever a ball that's not perfect. We all say what's wrong with him because he, and he still through like four touchdowns or three years, he still had an, an unbelievable night and we dropped more balls. We're not, we're not used to dropping balls. So, but that's why you running game makes to help you when you're out of sync in capacity, man, you gotta be good with something. Sorry to interrupt you all. Like I was, I was thinking about it. If you saw the comment a couple weeks ago, I think it was a scout that said it's like King Louis is trying to hit a five on one run in comment. He throws the past and then you get to a certain point where the guy breaks on breaks the level. I don't know what you have to, I know you can get into for sure, but you have to, to guard against that. Want to be too perfect every single time you think that's he could be president in some way. Uh Access. I'm 72 years old and I almost won all the games and impressed when they do and we are the top 10. I was so proud, proud of me. I'm going to be the eighth this week, seventh or fifth um and keep moving. So uh I put tremendous amount of pressure on myself to make sure that we continue to grow and we did took a step back. Uh So, I can't imagine a 21 year old with the pressure that, that's on Caleb or on, on break and every day they're talking about Heisman every day, they're talking about every little thing they do in the pros and where they're gonna be drafted and how they're gonna be drafted and pressure on the team. You gotta play well, you gotta practice every day and you got, they're human beings, their kids in school and we forget that we, we, we project them into something. They're not, they didn't ask for this. He didn't ask for all this hype. Um But they, they can very talented. He'll, he's uh he'll be back at work. He'll be competing harder tomorrow than, than he's competed all year because he knows he wasn't happy with the outcome of the game. And that's really when he says the main thing is the main thing. That's all that matters. We can have all this discussion. You have to find ways to win. We did that at a state and we didn't play well, we didn't do that. Saturday night, we got close. I mean, with 3 50 left, I thought, yeah, we're good. We're good. This is who we are. And then with 1 22 left, I thought defense stopped him, which was great. Gave us a chance. Georgia Tech last year. They didn't stop, they let's talk. So it was the same thing. But this year they stopped it. It was a small back. We, we saved our time out. So we, we, we use those wisely. We had a chance to win the game at the end and we just didn't co your sales still achieve all of this only discussed so often. So they would see that. Yeah, I had a big movie. I, I'll do some of this. I mean, I, there's some others out there that didn't have Great Saturdays either. I'll show them that there's some that didn't play well. But one and that's the difference right now in us, we'd still be a top 10 team if we found out a way how to, to, to drive with 1 22 left and score and, and we wouldn't be having these discussions. Um So, so, yeah, but, but I'll also, we tell them every day you gotta get rid of it, win or lose, you gotta learn from losing. Um And we've been hard on them about winning it harder last week on them for the Miami game than probably any we have that we won. It was a big game in people's minds for sure. So, uh but they, they've got today is to get rid of it and start on Georgia Tech and, and they'll see the Georgia tech beating Miami. We'll go back and show them that and, and they gotta understand, but they'll see our game at the Georgia Tech last year that took a lot away from us. So, uh even though we played some really good teams at the end, uh, that one's talked about the most. Did your last experience study? The psychology last week was more challenging. Absolutely. Last week was a nightmare and I failed and I try, I pulled out every stop for 35 years. Uh, every little thing I could do and I, I didn't get it done. So I felt open too bad, man. C five. Ok. Plan and yeah. Yeah. And I, I said, uh, I fell in so many different plays. Um, but, but I, I don't have a job ma I gotta sign on one other question in light of the news last week, about in person scouting and sign sting, potentially curious how pervasive you think that is in college football, how much you account for it and how damaging can it be if you think someone may have your signs, uh, it's, uh, prevalent, uh, and it's, it's awful. It's, it's very dangerous and we know we played against the people that have had our side and what we should do next year and they're looking at it and I hope we'll do it is go to the communication system from the sideline to the helmets of the quarterback and then you've got them, our signals and that's from thrown out. So that, that we should have done that 20 years ago. And we didn't do it because we were voting at all levels and some of the lower levels couldn't afford it and they wouldn't put the rule through because they said if North Carolina can afford it, West Carolina can't. And we're all voting for football, then we're not gonna have it. But I do think we'll have that next year. Uh, they're looking at it right now and probably the latest news will speed it up. Yes, Michael. Go ahead. Not that, uh, Georgia Tech, we won three games against ranked teams in the last two years on the road. Is there something that they do or something you bring peace inside allows them to make up for some of the top disparage that is, is there like, is he on his personality that I don't know, uh, we one of them. So I'll have to ask him, I'll ask him before the game. Why did you beat us? Uh, you know, sometimes too and I, I did think we deserve to be 10 sometimes when you're ready that we got beat as a ranked team a couple of years ago, we were good and that was preseason ranking. So, I mean, some of these things are a little bit of a farce and I've always said that I said the media when the media picks us and they're wrong. Nobody grade you, you're never wrong. I said you got to pay, I'm not, you can make it right. I was gonna say you mentioned before last year that you really rely on watch fans a lot and I'm supposed to stay on in too much. You know, it's only been a couple of games. You start to be that way with test. Really? No. That, that, that's a good question. Shift. The question right now is how are people gonna play us? We didn't have any idea. Virginia with a week off and they'd seen kids, we didn't have any idea what they were gonna do in the game plan. We're gonna start seeing, uh, coaches or, or parents, I mean, they, they're gonna sit and watch somebody else and, and they're gonna, they're copycats. So you're, you're gonna start saying, so what happened at the end of last year when Georgia Tech blitzed, um, us so much and got the great, the either blitzing at drop an eight, then we had three week of B and, and drop and eight. I mean, this is what was, we didn't handle it very well. Um, so we're, we, we got to get a feel, we think we'll have a better field this week, but because is such a, um, he's such a prominent factor now, when he walks on the field, we probably won't know till the first quarter how Georgia Tech is gonna play us and, and it changes the entire look of your defense because they're gonna try to get to around it. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, it's good. But when you went back and watched someone to take some village about that new jobs, you know, you my, I, I don't ask them because that's coach Galloway's job to meet with them individually. I meet with the group. Um, normally my experience has been number one, I feel awful. Number two, they have no idea. It's like asking me why I didn't coach better. I tried. Um, why did you drop balls hold? I just did. Uh, so that there's, that, that's, these are human beings and, and, and, and a lot of gray and, and you, a lot of things just aren't. Why did you crumble? So I think how long term? No, no. Uh Why did you miss a tackle drive? Coach? I didn't ask you drive, drive. I knew you drive. Why did you miss that? Um And you, you, you can't get access. Um When you, when you ask Chip by the name, Ann Morda Oar and s they're simple. Um He had a lot of things going on around me. So sometimes you don't realize you'll do it this way. That's what you do. Um Should we have done it? Yes. Should we have talked them all better? Yes. If we did not have to stop that or start that, we have done that Wednesday instead of Saturday. We have plans and sometimes those plans change. I do think the hardest job in, in college football is probably to play hard because there aren't many people that love being defensive coordinator. They just, they just love to yell at the defensive coordinator, you don't stop on. Everybody loves to call plays and man, everybody can call them that hasn't called them. And it's a whole lot easier to call when you don't have information. It's a whole lot easier and it's a whole lot easier to call them after it's done. I've had some of those fourth and two of the, the, the fourth and five minus 47. I go for it and don't make it. I'm sitting there saying she has done that. Uh and then, and there were 50,000 said John, he shouldn't have done that. And I said, yeah, I could have made it and said, God, I love that aggressiveness and that guy, he he he goes after it. And so that's, that's the life you live as a coach. But, but if we didn't have wonderful fans that love coaching and questioning, we wouldn't have a job. I mean that that's, that's true. I've always said I, I'd rather somebody, the difference in our fans being upset or we're lost now and not caring at all when we got here five years ago is what you want. You want people who are passionate, you want people who care, you want people who hurt to lose, you want people proud of your top 10 team um in instead of uh people who are complacent and don't care. So I I don't, I don't mind people being aggressive. I don't mind people questioning, I don't mind people being angry. That's a whole lot better than I care. It's a whole lot better than up here. I don't think it's pressure. I take it. It's pride. You got pride in your program. It's hard to lose. I get disappointed when you do Reagan. I take, yeah.
