Walker: It felt like a weight had been lifted
UNC WR Tez Walker discusses his return in a 40-7 win over Syracuse and the moment he found out he'd be eligible to play.
100%. How you doing? Good. How, how are, we're good, we're good, everybody good. All right, go ahead. So what did it feel like going out there and actually being you informed with the whole process of actually playing the game after what you've been experiencing here the last month. Yeah, ju just a blessing. Just blessed to be out there. Um and my teammates in my corner since, since I've been here and they was do the same thing since I've been on i on the field helping me out and everything. So just been blessed. What was their reaction with you when they found out Thursday you were gonna be able to play and there's, there's something maybe that stood out that maybe somebody said did. Um I mean, everybody was just, just happy for me like about she had a tear hug in every last one of them because you know, they, they all just, just happy that I was back. So what's it been like just to see people wearing your number kids Walker shirts and you know, free Ted Walker a couple of weeks ago, I mean, the whole country and in some ways have been. Yeah. It's, um, it, it's just dope, man. It's just something like I, I've dreamed about since I was six years old and I started playing, being in front of something like that stuff happening like that. So just this isn't just a blessing. It's a blessing. Did you have a grasp on how big the story is, or did you try to insulate yourself away from that? Because maybe it made it more difficult. I try to stay away from it because it was a little difficult. But do you have an idea how big your story? Uh I don't mean I don't really pay no attention to it. I'll tell you how beneficial was it? We know you were you to practice, how beneficial was it to, you know, kind of keep practicing with them. Did it help you to stay? Yeah, it did. Um after they going to get the 1st 10 corners. So they, they were giving me work. I was giving them work every play. So tell me stay, stay in shape, help me get good work. I saw that in the third quarter. You and they did, it was like a little hand when the relationship like between you two guys obviously coming in as transfers into this office and kinda building involved. Um It's been, it's been real good. Um We both talk every day like we know we wanna want to come in and make an impact for this team and that's like that's, that's what we've done. We still got a lot of work to do. So just me and him want to make an impact with his team that brings us closer also with the other, the rest of the room. Um, I did. Yeah. Um, yeah, I was at a point where like when I was on scout team, I was just prepping for next year. Like I didn't think it was going, there was no chance that I was gonna get cleared. So, did you give Drake any grief on the, uh, the long past both? You and he were wide up when he throws up? No, I just went up to him, told him a good throw and I was happy that we scored. You didn't tell me you were? No, I mean, he asked me, was it there? I was like, I mean, I guess so. I mean, we, we got seven points out of the job. So says how much of a shock was you come out? Obviously, you've been on scouting for a couple of weeks now and maybe resigning yourself to the fact that you weren't gonna play this year. Like how much of a shock was Thursday when you got to be like, um, it was, it was very shocking like I was surprised, but I was just, I was just glad it was over. I just felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Uh She like screamed, like I had to turn my phone down because he screamed so loud. But she was real happy. My mom teared up. So it was a heartfelt moment. What gave you that optimism? Um, what, um, Co Co Evans, uh, play on the team? You know, he came to me after practice. He was like, good luck today. And like I asked him, like, what are you talking about? I had no idea he's talking about. He just said good luck. So I thought in my head, like they probably got, was working on something, something like that. So that's when I went to Drake, it was like, it might be a possibility. Um I'm not sure the exact number, I think it's like probably like 11, 12 people. Uh grandma, mom, siblings, uncle, aunt, uncles and aunts was, was the game, I guess, kind of close to what you envisioned as far as I know, obviously the first week, you know, back in your hometown and, and things like that, but you're now still pretty close to where you grew up about a couple of hours away. Um, but that sort of homecoming ish dynamic. Was it similar to kind of what you envisioned? Yeah, it did. And then it me, it felt, felt nice when every time I caught a pass, the crowd got loud. So it was, it was a dream come true. And I know they were, you know, trying to, to the game squads squads, things like that. Did you kind of anticipate playing as much as you did and getting as much, uh, attention from Drake as you did. Um, no, I mean, I just, whenever my number was called from Coach Gway, I just try to stay ready and be, like, locked out and locked in for when my number was called. And what was it like having that, having those family members in the first time watching him play football in college? Um It, it, it's a hard woman that she finally get to get to see me play like she was never able to do that in high school and even when I was a kid, so just glad she's able to do that. Now you say what? Uh I don't think I did before the game. What were those moments like for the game test? Were people coming up to you just like guys on my team like, you know, it's go time or were you trying to sort of get off by yourself and be quiet for a little bit? Like what was the pregame vibe? Like, like they come up to me, you know, dial me up and tell me it's go time like I just embrace it. Um But yeah, I just uh stay locked in, stay died in to what I had to do. So, yeah, that was, that was dope when I see they had it in my locker before pregame in pregame. So I thought that was dope. They let me um run out with the flag. Yeah, it was. You said what? Um it's a great honor um being from here growing up in the state. Um Everybody in the state dreams of running out the flag at this university. So. Alright, good thanks. Thank you. Good stuff. T thank me. Oh, what? No.
