Welter and Gold: Canes hoping to land Tarasenko this offseason
Pat Welter and Adam Gold discuss the Canes and their pursuit of Vladimir Tarasenko. Carolina also enjoys having defensemen who can score goals in bunches. The Canes keep consistency in the net by bringing back the three goalies from last season.
Right a week into NHL Free Agency. The Carolina Hurricanes is busy at the start, but things have slowed down here since. So let's bring in Kane's insider in 99.9. The fan radio host, Adam go to break things down for us. Adam, everybody thought Vladimir Terrien was coming to the Keynes from New York, but you said not so fast and sure enough, he fires his agent. Negotiations start over where do things stand now? Uh Basically where they stood about seven days ago. Uh There's an offer, there's been an offer made to Terra and he has yet to accept it. It's still sitting there. I don't know where, I don't know if it's on a desk in an inbox, uh on a beach in a boat. I have no idea, but the offer has not been accepted and there's still a lot of misinformation out there. They had never gotten to the point where anybody was preparing a press release. All they done was made an offer. And at that point, Tarasenko Camp really had only two offers out there. Uh One from Carolina, one from Ottawa, then he fired his agent. Uh I guess it was July 3rd or fourth fired the agent and here we are, they're trying to drum up a market. I don't know if one exists or not, but the hurricane still have an offer. Now, the fans all want to see the canes bring in that 30 goal scorer. But it seems like Don Wade in the front office have identified a market inefficiency getting goals from their defense. They led the league in it last year after the Brent Burns trade, they bring in Dmitry Orlov, Tony d'angelo reportedly still coming back and there's also reports out there about Eric Carlson potentially coming in a big trade. So what is it about defense and guys that can score that woe likes so much. Well, it's not just uh Tom, that's really the way Carolina plays. They, they need to get that from their defense because their forwards are not a bunch of, you know, 30 plus goal scoring guys, not that they don't have 30 goal scoring potential in Ao and Benioff and in nature. So they've got that but they don't have enough of it. Uh And, and Michael Buntain, we kind of flirted with it the last couple of seasons. Um The Tony d'angelo thing right now is kind of in a holding pattern. It was supposed to have been executed today. Uh That was supposed to be a formality, but I kind of feel like all of these things are tied up in one big ball. You've got, uh, Brett Pesci who is entering the final year of his contract and wants a long term deal and I don't think he's going to get a long term deal from Carolina, so he was potentially being shipped out for whatever d'angelo was supposed to have been here. Um, he is not d'angelo wouldn't be the replacement for Pesci because Tony is not a top four defense, but not in the eyes of Carolina. Although he did play here two years ago in that way for Carolina, Eric Carlson, the reigning Norris trophy winner has four years left in a contract that pays him $11.5 million a year. Carolina is not going to accept that cap it. San Jose would have to be willing to accept, uh, or keep probably 30% of that salary to get it down in the neighborhood of 7.5 to 8. Frankly, I think Carolina would like it to be lower so they might have to be another team involved. Uh, but there's so many moving parts and I think there's a word of caution on Eric Carl. He's had a long history of injury problems. Uh, he was fully healthy last year and thus, we see what he was all about when he is completely healthy, but he's got a history of leg problems, foot problems and man, I wouldn't trust a 33 year old defenseman with four more years left on a contract. If it's up to me, I'd roll the dice with Brett Pesci on the final year of his deal. Hope to win the Stanley Cup and hope to keep him maybe on a shorter term deal. A lot of question marks still to be answered. For one thing they showed up right away was the goaltending situation, running it back with anti Ranta Freddie Anderson, Pio all team friendly deals. I'm not sure what they could have done different, but is that enough to win the cup three goalie for the price of one? Yeah, they do get, they get the three goalies that they had a year ago for the, basically the same price. If you have a pro rate Kakos NHL contract NHL salary, it's basically the same to get all three and Kakos gonna make $2 million this year. Uh, is it enough? I mean, it was enough to get them to the Eastern conference finals this year. Uh, I think they've got three guys that they can rely on. Um, they've, they've all got physical issues. There were very few moments last year where all three were physically healthy. They'll probably need 1/4 goalie. The problem that I think Carolina's gonna find this year is where do you stash 1/4 goalie? There is no minor league affiliate right now. There's no a HL affiliate. Could you stash another goalie in the east coast hockey league in Norfolk? I don't, I just don't know, you can, uh, so Carolina's gonna have to get creative. I'm sure they'll share a, uh, an, a HL affiliation with somebody. But still, it's gonna be difficult for them to have players in the minor leagues playing their system and especially a goalie that's playing, that's the other complicating factor. What happens if Anderson and Rata and Kako are all healthy at the same time, probably got to find a place for Kako to play because if Anderson is healthy, I think he's gonna play unless Kako simply flat out wins the job in training camp and then Carolina's got other issues. Sebastian Ao's contract, the big fish still out there. What's the latest with that? Do you see anything coming in the coming days there or any of any of these other big moves? Uh I think the thing is really more a matter of time. There's no pressing need to get it done today or, uh, my guess is that it will happen before opening night and if I had to be a betting man and while I don't wager, I follow the industry, I would say that a will probably get, uh, eight year extension in the neighborhood of between 9.5 and 10 split the difference, nine and three quarters. Uh, and that, you know, he'll be the Hurricane's captain within two years. Um He's that kind of player, he's that kind of person and I think he'll be here forever. Uh I think we're basically just kind of, I think both sides are just kind of digging in quite at the end. I wouldn't say this is a goal line stand by either side, but it does seem like this is on the one yard line. Yeah, he's the face of the franchise. It is a big contract for all parties involved. No need to rush it. And as Don Woodell said last weekend it is July not opening night. Still plenty of time for all these moves to get done. He's Adam Gold stick with him for the latest on everything Kanes.
