Welter's Baseline Thoughts: Bacot gets the senior sendoff he deserves and why UNC can beat Duke again
Pat Welter breaks down UNC's 84-51 win over Notre dame, puts Armando Bacot and RJ Davis' legacy's in perspective and previews UNC vs. Duke part 2.
There's senior day and then there's your second senior day. Let's give you some baseline thoughts from an 8451 UN C win over Notre Dame Armando Bacot final game. Yes, his final game in his fifth year at the Smith Center. And what a way to go out of all the things he's done in his career here. 162 games, the most all time in the AC C UN CS all time leading rebounder. He goes out with two threes and his last game here. Uh They were calling him Tray co or three co after the game. Uh Hubert Davis did tell us that they co you know, he, he has the green light to shoot a three just has to come at the right time and no better moment than senior night. I'll let anybody on the team you can, you can use whatever is in your bag. Sometimes the the question is, you know, a debate on what's actually in the bag. Bacot. A kind of a quiet uh 14 points, not a double double, which is not what you'd expect. Um But this is more than just one game we're talking about Armando Bacot. This is about the legacy and we got to celebrate him last year on senior day, not knowing if he'd come back for more. But in this nil era when NBA future is uncertain, you might be playing in the G League, you might be playing overseas, might be a second round pick. Undrafted. You don't really know as a big man. It's tough when you're not, you know, when you're traditional kind of back to the basket big minus the two threes tonight. Why not come back? And that's what Baycot did. He's had a chance to rewrite his legacy after making the national championship two years ago, missing the tournament last year and then you go all the way back to his freshman year, which was something he talked about after this game tonight. I mean, it's just amazing. I could just remember as a freshman that summer meeting with coach Williams and just him just being so honest and telling me I needed to get better. I mean, we had Deron Shark, we had Walker Kessler coming in and I feel like a lot of kids in my situation would have transferred to quit, but it just pushed me to go harder and you gotta love too that he thanked the media, he's emotional and instead of talking about himself, he's, he's thanking us. I didn't know I was going to start crying. I'm just so thankful. I mean, even for you guys, I mean, through the tough times and good times, y'all have always remain professional and y'all believed in us and I mean, just everything y'all do, I'm gonna miss this part of it too. Just being able to see all your faces when we travel and being able to play in this gym is, it's meant the world to me. I wanna thank you Armando Bacot because you have been awesome to cover, you credited us for being professional through the hard times. You were as well. I'll never forget, you know, last year after UN C got eliminated from the AC C tournament, their NCAA tournament hopes over, you could tell they didn't want to go to the nit. And, you know, I asked Bacot, what was, what was just wrong with this season? He said the story of this year was last year and they made it a point early this season to make this a fresh start with Baycot back, RJ Davis back the transfers coming in. Cormac Ryan Harrison, Ingraham, all kind of united to, you know, do something special together in their final seasons. And Cormac Ryan honored in this game as well. Even though he's only spent one year here at UN C, he's made an impact and of course, RJ Davis and he's kind of in the Baycot mode from a year ago where you don't know, is he going to come back for 1/5 year? He could at this point I don't see why he couldn't play in the NBA the way he's scoring right now. Yeah, he's undersized but he's a pretty active defender. I mean, that's a conversation for another day. He can come back and he left that door open. How do you approach a senior day when you're not sure if it is the end? Um just to go out there as just like your last game, um just have that mindset, just embracing the moment, cherishing and having fun and just going out there with just joy all all over your face and across the board just because you never know, like, I don't know my decision. I don't know what I'm gonna do yet. So just conscious cherishing this and just embracing everything that's coming through, he's had a lot of time to talk about his legacy lately, whether it was the career high 36 and then topping that with a career high 42 the most points ever in the Smith Center. And we were talking about two special all time guys that if they meet the criteria and they got one more March to do it here, maybe two for Davis. They could have their jerseys up in the rafters here at Smith Center. So what's left for them? Well, a game against the rival Duke and on paper, you gotta think Duke could take this one right? UN C wins it here. Duke wins it over there and outfitting. They would be co champs in the AC C. That's what makes me wonder, could us c steal this one, you know, kind of like two years ago when everybody was celebrating. Coach K's final game there, UN C comes in there plays spoiler and rides the momentum all the way to the national championship game. And you've got two guys on this team that played in that national championship game that know what it takes to win. It, Cameron know what it takes to win in March and they really want to raise that banner. UN C hasn't had a regular season AC C title in five years. And Hubert Davis has been vehement that it means something to him. It means something to this team. So I wouldn't be surprised if they go into Cameron and steal it. But Duke is playing some great basketball right now. Case in point what they did to NC State with NC State's season on the line at PNC Arena, a place that they lost last year. Duke is quietly looking really good. Ever since they lost here at Smith Center, they have rattled off multiple double digit wins. They aren't just beating people. They are dominating in Shire. He's got a short resume as a head coach, but that resume has shown that he gets teams to peak at the right time. And last year I like Duke at this point in the year, they were quiet. They went, went into Greensboro and won the AC C championship. I thought they had a chance to make it all the way to the final four. They just ran into a bus saw in Tennessee problem with this year's team is no Derek lively and I think that could be another chip in Un C's corner again in this matchup. Un CS got a lot of pieces to throw at you down low. Whether it is Baycot, who got the best of Kyle Phillips in battle the blues part one. And then off the bench, you've got Jalen Washington, got Jalen Withers Harrison Ingram. There's a lot of physicality. UN C could throw at them and their defense still top 10 in the nation. Top in the AC C, one of the best at guarding the three point line. They've got bodies to throw at some of Duke's undersized guards. So it should be another classic Armano Baco's final game against Duke inside Cameron. What could be better than that? Well, maybe if they meet in the final four again.
