Women's soccer star Kristine Lilly, who has since retired from soccer, speaks with WRAL's David Crabtree. Lilly says that there's immense pressure on the athletes to do well at the Games.
everything neighbors. 43 two well if anyone knows the pressure of living up to expectations on the world stage, it's women's soccer star, Christine Lilley who won four national titles on U. N. C. Soccer team from 89 to 90 to two World cup titles and three olympic medals. Two of them gold Christine. Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Yes. It's great for me to be here and excited to talk to you guys about some olympics. Yeah. That you've retired from professional soccer rightfully. So how are you still getting your soccer fix? Yeah. Well, I mean shoot, I think it's been over 12 years since I've retired and now I get my fix for my kids. I do a lot of coaching. I'm in the middle of my camp right now. Uh so I'm coaching a ton of kids right now and that's where I get it now. I don't get that competitiveness from coaching but I still get the excitement to be around for the ball, being around kids having fun and playing this great game. Talk to me about performing on a global stage under this type of pressure when the world is projecting everything on to you, particularly in this world of social media as well. How do you cope with that pressure? You know, I think the social media world is totally different. I didn't have any of that when I was playing, but you still have the newspapers. And I think what I learned most was when I was playing is not to read anything whether it's good or bad because whatever it gets into your psyche could play a role in how you feel. So these players right now, I think they have another level with the social media aspect that they do have but they've also been there and done this before. So we're looking at the U. S. Team right now, going into the next round and uh this is where they want to be in the next round and everyone was like well they didn't have a first grade first three games but they are where they are supposed to be and this is where they really shine and this is where they come together and this is where they are so strong and why we've been so successful because once we get to this knockout phase we kind of come together and become stronger. You know it even as the team this team moves to become stronger and individual athletes moved to become stronger the bottom line is and the reality is someone is going to lose no one. I mean you were you and see where it seemed like that soccer team never lost much less the basketball team. Uh At some point in time you can't stay on top of the mountain. How do you prepare young people to understand that they are human and they are not superheroes, Right. Yeah. Well I think though, I mean when I'm teaching our young kids like mistakes happen, you win some and you lose some, you got to be able to handle both. And I think the message that we're teaching or I'm teaching young kids to say is that you've got to handle it. I mean it's okay if you lose, it's not the end of the world, but you also want them to know that we want you to compete. We want you to try because that's what the lessons they learned, They never tried them, they never know. So in the same concept of teaching these kids that it happens and it's okay. But I still want to get yourselves right back out there and do it. That's really where the lessons come into play, that even when, when you're down, you gotta keep getting back up and keep trying because that's how you grow as a player and as human beings, you know, Christine, it's always such a privilege to be able to talk with the winner, a champion, a gold medalist. Where do you keep your gold medals? Well, you know, I usually keep them in a drawer, but I have camp and I get to bring him tomorrow to the camp to show the kids. So this is the part that I love because I forget like I don't want to be just say you want to see my medals, but when I do bring them out that people get so excited, so I'm coming out of my sock drawer and bring them down to the soccer field tomorrow to share with about 120 something kids at camp coming out of your sock drawer. I love that Kristine Lilly. We thank you for your time. Thanks for joining us, all the best to you and all those Children. Thank you so much. I appreciate being here today. Mm. Thank you. Christine. Thanks you guys keeps him in a sock drawer. I love that.
