Durham, N.C. — After being closed for a week amid a flu outbreak on Duke's campus, Krzyzewskiville will reopen Friday night, university officials confirmed.
Officials said students will be allowed to return to their tents at 7 p.m. Friday, but anyone who feels sick will be permitted to go back to their dorm room without penalty.
Officials told WRAL News that they'll monitor flu transmission closely and would reinstate a "grace" period again if needed.
Students camping out in Krzyzewskiville for basketball tickets have enjoyed the warmth and relative cleanliness of their dorm rooms since the university shut things down on Feb. 1.
Students were "on grace" since and still have an opportunity to secure tickets to the Blue Devils' game against the rival Tar Heels. Duke hosts the Heels in Durham on March 3.
Rules of the ticket lottery require that one person must always be with the tent, around the clock, except when the temperatures drop below 25 degrees. Then, students can leave and find warmer accommodations.
The flu outbreak at Duke mirrors a larger trend across North Carolina and the country.
Thirty-four people statewide died from the flu between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3, bringing the total number of flu deaths in the state to 140, according to data released by health officials on Thursday.
