Knoxville, Tenn. — Campbell led early but ultimately fell to Knoxville Regional hosts and No. 11 seeded Tennessee, 9-1 (6 inn.) Friday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Campbell (37-18) will face Ohio State (35-16) in an elimination game tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The top-seeded Lady Vols (40-16) advance to face Oregon State (34-19) in the 1-0 game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
Kayla Fredendall gave Campbell the lead on a solo home run in the second inning. It marked the third home run of the season for the senior and second in the past four games.
The nationally-ranked Lady Vols responded immediately in the bottom half of the second, scoring four unearned runs on a failed pickoff attempt and a bases-clearing single hit up the middle of the field.
After a scoreless third, Tennessee added runs in each of the next three innings to close out the game.
Campbell made several defensive plays throughout the game to prevent runs from scoring at the plate including an impressive throw by Tyra Parker to Savannah White who tagged a runner attempting to score.
Georgeanna Barefoot held her own for most of the game against a Lady Vols offense that ranks 25th in the nation in scoring, allowing just one earned run across the first four innings. Barefoot finished the evening giving up five earned runs off of 11 hits and seven walks while striking out five batters.
Reliever Ashley Rogers (11-5) tossed three innings, striking out six and walking one batter to pick up the win. Starting pitcher Erin Emoundson went the first three innings, giving up three hits, one run and striking out just two.
