Canes take Game 5 with 3-1 win over Rangers

Rod Brind’Amour won a coach’s challenge and the Carolina Hurricanes won another home game.
The two things went hand in hand on Thursday in the Canes’ 3-1 win over the New York Rangers in Game 5 at PNC Arena.
Brind’Amour’s challenge overturned what would have been the Rangers’ go-ahead goal early in the second period. The video review might have been just what the Canes and their coach needed.
Instead of being down 2-1, the Canes used the moment to take control of the game with 15:03 left in the period. Given the new lease on the game, the Canes were able to dominate.
After a hooking penalty by New York winger Frank Vatrano, Teuvo Teravainen scored the Canes’ first power-play goal of the series at 9:47 in the second period.
The Canes improved to 7-0 in the playoffs at home to counter an 0-5 record on the road. They will try to change the latter mark on Saturday and close out the Rangers in Game 6 at Madison Square Garden.
Vincent Trocheck scored at 12:57 in the first period to give the Canes a 1-0 lead. Captain Jordan Staal set up the short-handed goal with a beautiful saucer pass.
Mika Zibanejad, who scored in both games in New York, tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 17:06 in the first.
Andrei Svechnikov added a goal for the Canes at 13:01 in the third.
It looked like the Rangers had a 2-1 lead at 4:57 in the second period but the video review showed that Andrew Copp was offside before Ryan Strome was able to get a shot by Canes goalie Antti Raanta.
Raanta finished with 16 saves, a light workload compared to the 31 saves by New York goalie Igor Shesterkin.
