Claire Curzan will return to North Carolina as a silver medalist.
Curzan earned the medal in the 4x100 women's medley after she swam the butterfly leg in the preliminaries at the Tokyo Games. Swimmers who compete in the preliminaries but not in the finals earn the medal but do not participate in the ceremony.
Although Curzan did not compete in the finals, she still receives a medal.
Regan Smith, Lydia Jacoby, Torri Huske and Abbey Weitzeil swam in Saturday night's finals. The team finished 0.13 seconds behind Australia.
Last weekend, Curzan swam in the 100-meter butterfly semifinal with a time of 57.42 seconds, giving her a tenth-place finish.
Curzan, who calls Cary home and is a rising senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, finished in 57.49 seconds in the qualifying meet.
Curzan did not advance to the final.
In three seasons at Cardinal Gibbons, Curzan has won six state championships and has been named the MVP of the championship meet twice. She was named Girls Swimmer of the Year at the HighSchoolOT Honors on Thursday night.
