Culture State: Caring Off the Court
Posted June 10, 2021 10:40 p.m. EDT
On this week’s edition of Culture State, Dennis Cox and I reflect on the announced retirement of Coach K from Duke.
Talking with our guest this week, former Duke guard Andre Dawkins, we learned about how caring Coach K was off the court.
During his freshman year at Duke, Dawkins lost his sister to an automobile accident. It was not until after his junior year that Coach K suggested to Dawkins that he take time off to fully process the loss of his sister. After redshirting a year, Dawkins did return for his senior year in 2013-2014. Dawkins spoke about how Coach K was the one who cared about all his players off the court.
Dawkins also played his freshman season with the next coach at Duke, Jon Scheyer. Dawkins described Scheyer as not only one of the smartest people he has played with, but truly one of the most competitive.
The changing of the guard is happening in front of us, and time will tell what the future holds.
