Charlotte, N.C. — Former Carolina Panthers head coach and current Washington Football Team coach Ron Rivera has been diagnosed with lymph node cancer, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday night.
"I was stunned," Rivera told Schefter. "But I was angry because I feel like I'm in the best health I've been in."
ESPN reports Rivera, 58, told his Washington players Thursday night. He also said the cancer is in the early stages and is considered "very treatable and curable."
Schefter reports Rivera felt a lump in his neck in early July and saw a doctor about it a few weeks later when it didn't go away. He also said he plans to continue coaching after his doctors encouraged him to do that.
"They said 'If you feel strongly, do it'," Rivera told Schefter. "'Don't slow down, do your physical activities.'"
