— Former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule has accepted the head coaching position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the school announced Saturday.

Rhule, 47, is set to become the Cornhuskers’ 31st permanent head coach.

Nebrasaka has signed Rhule to an eight-year contract, but other terms of the deal weren’t immediately available on Saturday morning.

On Monday, Nebraska Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Trev Alberts will introduce Rhule, the university announced on its website.

"It is a tremendous honor to be chosen to lead the Nebraska Football program," Rhule said in a news release. "When you think of great, tradition-rich programs in college football Nebraska is right at the top of the list.

"The fan base is second to none, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to coach in Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field. My family and I are so grateful to become a part of the Husker Family, and we can't wait to get started."

In October, the Panthers fired Rhule after a 1-4 start. Rhule went 11-27 during his tenure as the Panthers’ head coach.

At the college level, Rhule led Baylor to a 19-20 record from 2017-2019. He also compiled a 28-23 record from 2013-2016 at Temple.

In the Nebraska release, Alberts said Rhule's success as the head coach at Temple and Baylor shows he can build a program.

"Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program," Alberts said in the release. "Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting."

Nebraska was looking for a permanent head coach after firing Scott Frost in September. Frost ended his Nebraska coaching career with a 16-31 record.

Mickey Joseph served as the Cornhuskers’ interim coach for the remainder of the 2022 season. On Friday, Nebraska ruined Iowa’s chance to clinch the Big Ten West Division title outright with a 24-17 win. It snapped Nebraska’s five-game losing streak.
