The Carolina Hurricanes have place goaltender Antti Raanta on waivers.
The move was made Saturday after another shaky outing in-between the pipes in Friday's 6-5 overtime loss to Nashville.
The 34-year-old has appeared in 14 games for the Hurricanes this season, posting a 6-5-1 record with a 3.61 goals-against average and a .854 save percentage.
The move doesn't necessarily mean he will no longer be a Hurricane or even sent down to the minors. Teams have 24 hours to claim Raanta, if he clears waivers without being picked up he could still be available to Carolina Sunday versus Washington.
What further complicates this move is the Canes have just four goaltenders on NHL contracts in their entire organization.
Pyotr Kochetkov has played in 14 games this season posting a 6-6-1 record with a 2.54 GAA and a .903 save percentage. But even he has seen some inconsistency this year. There's a reason why the Hurricanes front office stuck with the two veteran netminders this offseason, giving Koechetkov a chance to get plenty of play time in the American Hockey League while continuing to grow his game. But for the second year in a row the Russian goalie has been thrown in to NHL action.
Which brings us to Frederik Andersen, who when healthy is viewed as the Canes No. 1 in-between the pipes. But Andersen has been sidelined for nearly two months with blood-clotting issues.
Prior to Friday's game versus the Predators, Canes coach Rod Brind'Amour said Freddie's condition was improving but said there's just too much unknown right now.
"This is one of those things that's month to month and (Andersen) getting rechecked to see if things are looking good. So who knows"
The only other goaltender under contract is Yaniv Perets, The former Quinnipiac star has been playing with the Norfolk Admirals in the ECHL
According to multiple reports that leaves the Canes likely hitting the trade market.
The Hurricanes are back in action Sunday when they host the Washington Capitals.
